“Big Event” in BBall to be Announced

Link

“On Inside Wolfpack Sports this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on WRAZ Fox 50, Athletic Director Lee Fowler will announce a big event that will be hosted by the men’s basketball team.”

Does anyone know anything?

Most fans on internet message boards are speculating that this could be an announcement of a “Midnight Madness” for the coming season. That would be nice.

While we are on the topic of announcements for the coming season…SFN would like to suggest the following — how about a ‘special’ event to commemorate the 25 year anniversary of the Wolfpack’s 1983 National Championship? It sure would be nice if State would announce a match-up with the Houston Cougars for next year.

Even better would be a four-team event in the RBC to mimic the 1983 Final Four. The first night should have Louisville play Houston and the Wolfpack match-up with Georgia. The second day of play should have Louisville and Georgia followed by the Wolfpack and the Cougars. This event would/could have all types of traditional tie-ins; don’t forget that Georgia served as the Wolfpack’s first opponent in the RBC Center (called the ESA at the time).

This really shouldn’t be that big of an under-taking to put together, can it? Especially since we’ve had 25 years to plan something.

Can you imagine the national recognition and play that our program could get from such an event? Think about the honors and attention that we could turn on Jim Valvano and the V Foundation. Especially in light of Kay Yow’s current battle with cancer.

I am excited to see what kind of innovative event that our Athletics Department has put together in honor of one of the most memorable National Championships in basketball history.

I cannot help but believe that Noah is right too, but as I’ve said before, I’m missing some of the detail that apparently some of you guys have personal or inside knowledge on relating to the “bad blood” between some of the current big donors and V. Can anyone enlighten me a bit more in detail?

I have long been a proponent of having a V Foundation “Don’t ever give up!” dedicated square on the court — which would give the V Foundation good publicity, focus on those aspects of Jim Valvano that friend & foe alike admire, and perhaps also be a focal point for a new NC State tradition — akin to Clemson FB players rubbing the rock before taking the field, etc.

Ironic — lest some of the younger Pack backers not forget — NC state went under NCAA probation under Norm Sloan for a improper pick up game with David Thompson.

And Everett Case had his accusers – “the Wolfpack’s momentum was derailed in 1956, when the NCAA slapped N.C. State with four years’ probation. Case reportedly gave Louisiana high school phenom Jackie Moreland cash and gifts to entice him away from his previous agreement to attend Kentucky–a charge he denied. Just as that probation ended in 1960, State was hit with probation again–this time for a point-shaving scandal that caused the cancellation of the Dixie Classic. North Carolina was hit with probation as well.”

Not many people are free of warts and maybe we should consider the saying “To err is human — to forigve divine.” Alexander Pope.

On a side not – having nothing to do with how we cast Jimmy V in stone – when are we supposed to be recieving our football tickets in the mail, the anticipation is killing me. I can’t wait for kick off.

This is the part that drives me nuts mainly with younger State fans and the the NCSU adminstration. Valvano made mistakes, sure, but so did/does every other coach out there. Why some people are so niave that they don’t realize that a strong administration can keep things under wrap and even make some problems disappear without anyone else ever knowing, while a weak group of spineless administrators can magnify their own problems tenfold, is beyond me.

It will be a happy day when State fans can ignore troll bait. But I see that we are not there yet.

I just reserved both V’s and Bob V’s books at the library to take with me to the beach tomorrow. Never have read either of those completely, but got violently ill reading Gollenback’s “one sided version”!

Generally speaking, when someone tells you of the Valvano scandal, you have to look a little deeper at who it is that is saying it.

If, for example, it’s from the same cabal of folks who want you to believe that there was a parade for the football team for finishing fourth in the ACC, you can pretty much throw anything they have to say right out the window. That’s where 98% of the “Jimmy V was a cheater” stuff comes from, in my experience.

Valvano made mistakes, the biggest of which was placing a lot of faith in some of his players that turned around and abused that trust. Chris Washburn, for example, probably should have been tossed out sooner rather than later. (Side note: don’t EVER let a UNC fan tell you they didn’t recruit CW)

I can’t believe its taken this long to have a Midnight Madness. Sidney must have been like “you guys don’t do what???” I also wish someone could do some research and find all the articles both national and local-raleigh ones that were poo-poo-ing his recruiting ability. I have followed Ncstate for 20 years now and i have never seen getting commitments from freshman…i used to think only the tarholes and duke’s of the world could do that.

  11. BoKnowsNCS71 07/30/2007 at 2:05 PM #

I suspect they were afraid prior to Sidney that too few would attend. So they held this game during the day — on a a FB game day.

Now everyone is excited again about the team and is ready to get basketball madness at midnight. Should be a sell out.

My granddad was there the day the Wolfpack Club had their meeting to discuss Jim Valvano with the A.D.

That was a very heated meeting with what my granddad described as being a “bunch of cowards turning their back on a man that made the school great”. That was the last time my granddad attended a Wolfpack Club meeting, he never donated another penny to the school, and before walking out on the meeting after the decision to fire Valvano had basically been announced he told each and every one of them “it will be 15 to 20 years before this program will be worth a shit again and you are all making a big mistake…the man did nothing illegal”.

My understanding of the situation was that most members at the meeting were against Valvano. My granddad said he felt alone in his convictions.

I think after the facts came out everyone (except Tarholes and ignorants) saw that V had done nothing that warranted his being fired. I guess we should’ve gotten the boys jobs at car dealerships like they do in Chapel Hill and they wouldn’t have needed to sell their shoes for money.

Midnight Madness – I think the timing is right. Excitement and expectations are very high. Last year we got a new coach, this year we really launch the new era with Sid’s thumbprint starting to show.

Valvano – Coach V was one of the best basketball minds in the business at the time. He was intelligent, charismatic, handsome, and naturally witty. V’s only flaw is that he continued to challenge himself to the point that his reach exceeded his ability. He was a great coach, and wanted to also be AD. Then he wanted to be on TV. He did a massive amount of public appearances and loved it, but when my friend wanted an autograph for a sick friend, he dropped what he was doing and for a couple of minutes just focused on him. But it finally got to the point that he had more balls in the air than he could effectively manage.
V was a victim of celebrity. As far as the media was concerned, there was no such thing as a small mistake for him. Anything with V’s name on it sold fishwrap like crazy. Writers focused full time just on him. And when it turned out that there was no substance, he’d already been convicted of very serious crimes in the court of public opinion. As big a personality as he was, he had no defense against the avalanche that was the media explosion.
So we lost him. The bastards won.
Some day, I dream that someone with a spine at State will stand up to our connection, and love, for Coach V. And we will honor him in a large way. But the fact is we are still in recovery, and until we’re writing new, positive history, no one will consider it.

i think dukESPuNc would wanna be at it, the first one, coming off a 20 win season when NO ONE thought they’d do anything (I swear if u guys remember, the media would have made u thought sidney didn’t know what a pick-and-roll was) except State fans of course, and even some of them too. Plus having an awesome recruiting class, taking JJ away from Tennessee etc. etc.

  15. 66pack 07/30/2007 at 2:52 PM #

the good people in chapel hill wanted V out.also its obvious the players were not receiving illegal monies if they were selling shoes.

  16. 66pack 07/30/2007 at 2:54 PM #

and nc state admin. was and is spineless

  17. noah 07/30/2007 at 2:59 PM #

I really don’t think it matters whether or not V was a saint or a demon or something in between.

V made a bunch of mistakes (I don’t even think his most ardent supporters would argue otherwise). The administration handled them badly, somehow managing to underreact and then overreact all within the same news cycle, and then those mistakes were exploited.

It didn’t have to be that way. But that’s the way it went down. And that’s the way the history is going to remember it. And that’s why you’re never going to see V’s name on a building at NC State.

I believe NC State is run by a group of extraordinarily talented and intelligent people. And if I ever need them to find the area under the curve or build me a bridge, I would expect nothing but fine work from them.

But they still don’t know how to handle public relations or public communication. I’ve never seen any sign that it’s EVER been a skillset that’s highly valued at NC State. I’ve never really seen any sign that the graduates of NC State fully appreciate it’s value.

I just watch the same mistakes get made over and over and then everyone sits on the curb and wonder why they got screwed again.

Jim Valvano’s name should be on that idiotically named RBC, period.

Just In: Manning Schedules Press Conference
    Nick Stevens

    Posted: 13 minutes ago

Breaking news from Laurinburg: The highly anticipated commitment from Linebacker Terrell Manning will reportedly occur this Friday.

WRAL can confirm that Manning has scheduled a press conference for the afternoon of Friday, August 3, at 1 p.m., at Scotland County High School. Manning told TheWolfpacker.com this afternoon about his press conference.

WRAL reported last week that Manning would make his announcement sometime this week. Manning will decide between NC State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson, and several sources have told WRAL this afternoon that Manning is leaning heavily towards the Wolfpack. Some published reports have even indicated that Manning was leaning towards NC State.

According to Rivals.com, Manning is a 4-star prospect, the No. 78 overall player in the country, the No. 5 outside linebacker, and the No. 2 player in North Carolina.

Last season, Manning recorded 130 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 3 fumble recoveries. Manning has also received offers from Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina

That “idotic name” pays four million a year towards the operation and upkeep of the arena. That in turn keeps NC State’s rent lower than it might otherwise be.

Add to it that the Centennial Authority has four million less reasons to reach into the taxpayer’s pockets for ongoing operation of the arena, something that our good friends at the Dean E. Smith Center have yet to figure out. Instead of naming their place “Ball Park Franks Center” or something, they’d rather the citizens of NC pay for their basketball “classroom.”

  21. RedTerror29 07/30/2007 at 3:37 PM #

    vtpackfan,

Butler is in Kansas and is a very good CC program. They have several alumni in the NFL, including Bengals running back Rudi Johnson.

  22. RedTerror29 07/30/2007 at 3:45 PM #

Honoring V would mean the administration and several influential boosters admitting they were wrong, and they will never do that.

I can see something happening eventually, though. Say Lowe wins a NC or two and jaunts off to the NBA to win a title there. It won’t be long before someone says, “Hey, Sidney deserves a statue.” Then someone says, “Well, Case helped build ACC and NCAA basketball into what it is today, he needs one too.” And someone else says, “He never even won a NC, if we build him one, we gotta build one for Sloan and Valvano too.” Someone will retort “V got us on probation.” One of the first guys will reply “So did Case, and don’t forget Lowe used to water his lawn on the wrong day.” And thus we have four statues, one of which is V. (Write that down.)

  23. BoKnowsNCS71 07/30/2007 at 3:55 PM #

Maybe they could designate each one of the wolves in front of CF to honor several past coaches.

As for RBC — naming rights are an income source that will go to the highest donor. Right now that is the Royal Bank of Canada.

  24. RochesterRedWolf 07/30/2007 at 4:35 PM #

If 50,000 fans at 1 NCstate home game, donated 10 dollars = $5,000,000, couldn’t we form an LLC (Wolfpack Fans Inc.) and name the building whatever the hell we wanted?

I’d vote for: “Go to hell Carolina Arena”.

espn announcer: “coming to you tonight from Raleigh, NC, it’s the Wolfpack vs. the Tarholes at ‘Go to Hell Carolina Arena'”.

Although for sure it should be called “The James ??? Valvano Palestra”

and lastly, as cool as it sounds, $5million should probably go rather to the V-Foundation.

  25. noah 07/30/2007 at 4:36 PM #

Maybe $100 bills should fly out of my butt.

Terrell Manning would be so f-ing huge. If we land him and can get a good crop of OL that includes at least two solid tackle prospects, I’ll be absolutely thrilled.
