“Big Event” in BBall to be Announced

Link

“On Inside Wolfpack Sports this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on WRAZ Fox 50, Athletic Director Lee Fowler will announce a big event that will be hosted by the men’s basketball team.”

Does anyone know anything?

Most fans on internet message boards are speculating that this could be an announcement of a “Midnight Madness” for the coming season. That would be nice.

While we are on the topic of announcements for the coming season…SFN would like to suggest the following — how about a ‘special’ event to commemorate the 25 year anniversary of the Wolfpack’s 1983 National Championship? It sure would be nice if State would announce a match-up with the Houston Cougars for next year.

Even better would be a four-team event in the RBC to mimic the 1983 Final Four. The first night should have Louisville play Houston and the Wolfpack match-up with Georgia. The second day of play should have Louisville and Georgia followed by the Wolfpack and the Cougars. This event would/could have all types of traditional tie-ins; don’t forget that Georgia served as the Wolfpack’s first opponent in the RBC Center (called the ESA at the time).

This really shouldn’t be that big of an under-taking to put together, can it? Especially since we’ve had 25 years to plan something.

Can you imagine the national recognition and play that our program could get from such an event? Think about the honors and attention that we could turn on Jim Valvano and the V Foundation. Especially in light of Kay Yow’s current battle with cancer.

I am excited to see what kind of innovative event that our Athletics Department has put together in honor of one of the most memorable National Championships in basketball history.

I hope it is both mightnight madness and the final four thing. That would be fun and bring even more buzz to the basketball program. I would love to see gavin, jj, tracy, courtany, johnny thomas and fergerson put on a dunking show like most teams do on mightnight madness. And by the way fergerson can dunk like crazy, he has madd hops, he may not look like it but he does

I have heard we are having MM this year

    10:30 AM on a Sunday??

I don’t know anything. It will be interesting to see what it is though. I’m a little skeptical about putting together a final 4 thing – if for no other reason that I doubt those other schools would want to re-rehearse their bride maid role.

What would be nice is a single game vs. houston, the ‘Ville or a big name opponent.

Knowing Fowler, the big announcement is probably about a new hot dog vender or double butter on the popcorn this season.

I kind of like your suggestion about the recreation of the 1983 final four, but c’mon, let’s be real, can the AD and the SID first just pump out some simple and worthwhile work on a daily basis without concentrating on what we all know would be an overwhelming feat for them anyway.

I’ll say it again for the one thousandth time, I attended Sidney Lowe’s first official game as the new HC of the NC State Wolfpack, and man what a welcome celebration those administrators and researchers put together for him that night. It was so memorable I can just about quote the whole introduction word for word. The PA address went something like “…and the new Head Coach of the Wolfpack, Sidney Lowe… Play ball.”

Since he was such a great basketball coach in the past, I think he might lets us know how is will be on the sideline at each game as a non-paid assistant coach, so his vast knowledge of the game can be seen by all……..

Given the results of more recent games with Houston, I don’t much believe they would be interested in playing us any time, any where.

Oh, and the double butter will be courtesy of Eddie Whitley.

Maybe Lee is resigning. That would be huge.

might be a good idea for every 25th anniversary of a FF.. have a tourney with the same pairings at the place of the overall winner. Most likely a big sponsor could be had.

He’s probably announcing that Coach has his full support for the upcoming season.

burnbarn, that would be kind of fun, especially for the programs who need to re-ignite the old momentum that they once had. But remember, we would come up once, then again nine years later, and then it would be sixteen years before it would be our time again. Though I’m thinking Sidney might just earn us a couple of new spots in that rotation in the not too distant future.

Basketball tickets will go on sale tomorrow for Wolfpack Club members and the red and white game will be the weekend of the Virginia came – homecoming that weekend too.

  17. redfred2 07/29/2007 at 10:58 AM #

The red and white game on a weekend rather than a week night, and home coming weekend no less, that is progress. Maybe someone up is finally clueing a little.

    SLAP!!!

I thought someone might be dozing off while listening to Lee.

  19. MadWolf92 07/29/2007 at 12:16 PM #

Haven’t *most* of our Red-White games in the last several years been on the weekend?

  20. PackGirl 07/29/2007 at 12:42 PM #

Pardon my stupidity, but what exactly is midnight madness? A dunking contest that takes place at midnight?

  21. vtpackfan 07/29/2007 at 1:03 PM #

It’s a practice of sorts, but much looser and like an exhibition. Call a pep rally, it’s really for the students, die-hards. Maybe some could share of any past stories if memorable or worthy.

It’s also used as an effective recruiting tool in plaves like Chapel Hill, Lexington, and elsewhere. A chance in the fall to “spice up” the overall picture a recruit gets of the passion and commitment a certain school gives to it’s program.

I see that the Red/White game is on homecoming, with the tilt against the Yahoo’s also slated. Wouldn’t it have been a nice touch to put the Midnight madness on with a home football game? It’s now set on an off week for football (which maybe would have worked better last year since we needed football boys to suit up in order to scrimmage). Maybe just a schedule thing that could be worked out some other year. Just thinking in terms of maximizing recruiting trips.

Progress is progress. They got to have the Madness at Reynolds this year, come on!

Any body got the low down on ticket packages, how to order, and that sort of stuff. GoPack is the last place I go for help.

On another thread about or TE situation I noted that we are a little deeper at the position afters Hills injury than many supposed. I mentioned a JC transfer but couldn’t recall the name, and somewhat thought I meant Hannah (who foolowd CTC to FSU).

The I mentioned is R.J. Armstrong, a JUCO product from a strong program called Butler Community College (CO, KS?). 6’2″ and 250 lbs, maybe a little below avg size. He could be very useful in helping pug the hole in Bibles two TE system w/o burning up Bryans RS. Phillips and Fields would play if Stone, Kushner or Armstrong went down or were ineffective.

Sorry for the non spell check, I’m in a hurry to get out of the house. Have a good Sun. y’all. Go Pack!

I just can’t think of anything that would motivate Houston to want to play in an anniversary game of their more embarassing and painful loss of the national championship.

Think about one of our most painful losses — and that the team would invite us to come celebrate their victory?

I’d much rather see our school atone for the firing of Jimmy V. This might be by the naming of something or the erection of a statue that makes him a long lasting physical part of our ongoing NCSU history.

If not, the memory of him being unceremoniusly cast out and fired will forever continue a lingering rift (and anger in some) that still exists between some alumni and the school to this day.

  25. coppertop 07/29/2007 at 1:27 PM #

I remember when they opened the ESA there was a push among the students to get the basketball court or something significant named for Jimmy V. The adminstration decided to appease us at the time by calling the new crowd noise meter the Jimmy V noise meter… it was disgraceful.
