Georgia Tech – SOL?

Maybe it really will be a big year for Tobacco Road (and Clemson gets a better shot to finally break out of the middle of the pack) – ESPN is reporting that Thaddeus Young will stay in the NBA draft:

Georgia Tech freshman Thaddeus Young has decided to stay in the 2007 NBA draft. The move is expected. Young is projected by most NBA teams as a Top 15 pick.

They do have a 5 star PF and a 3 star PG coming in as replacements. Still looking for a big year for Tobacco Road, but GT will still be a battle in the middle of the pack.

Haven’t heard anything more on Singletary from UVa. Last news I read was that he was looking into NBADL as a fall back plan rather than go to school and play for Leito.

Looking how things are stacking up I’m beggining to beleive that if the boys and Sid want it enough than it’s there for the taking. With Duke isn’t going to be greatly improved over last year, IMO. Carolina will be good, maybe even go gang busters once in awhile, but I’m just not afraid of playing them anymore now that Sid and his staff are in control.

I might even through Haith’s UM team in the mix based on the fact that there are so many teams rebuilding going into next season and he seems to always get great effort and hustle out of his guys.

In a related topic a read from an article posted on Section six that coach Lowe talked Costner out of testing the waters this year, and expects him to explore his NBA status after the upcoming season.

We all should have expected this one. His leaving coupled with GG would make room for Mays and Williams, leaving additional schollies for ’08 preps only if another player jumps, transfers, ect.

Not really news, but just wanted to mention it as a near miss.

Reported Sean Singletary is returning to Virginia:

IMHO, Costner leaving now would be equal to Josh Powell leaving when he did. A really really good player who wasn’t quite ready when he left. Costner staying in school at least one more year will greatly benefit both NC State and himself. If anyone would be worth listening to concerning the NBA, it would be Sydney..errr…Sidney. 😛 (Couldn’t resist)

It’s amazing to consider how diluted the product is with the early defections across college basketball. I still think its one of the greatest things going, but you can almost feel how much higher the quality would be if everyone’s “draftable” players hung around 3 yrs.

One could argue that some of the frosh coming in are more suited to lace ’em up and compete with the best of them then ever before. With AAU seasons and All-Star games abound, todays player is better primed. The ‘Cuse won it with Carmelo, and teams like LSU make big runs to the Final Four on the backs of guys like Thomas.

Its a big risk not knowing if he’s just a one and done or will stick around for more, but it’s hard to blame anyone who signs someone with a load of talent.

I was selfishly hoping that the new three point rule in ’08 would keep Costner in school just one more year. He could really distance himself from some other “pretenders” at being a true inside/outside threat. I guess NBA scouts really don’t need proof when they think they have the handle on someones’s potential.

vtpackfan – NBA decision makers aren’t like the NFL. I haven’t figured out why they do what they do…you’d think that there is pretty of evidence Singletary would be a solid NBA guard, instead they keep on harping on his height.

Regarding Tech – this is the perfect example of why Tech is having a tough time building on their Finals appearance a few years ago. Hard to bring in new guys each year to make a finals run.

There hasn’t been a lot of Carmelo Anthonies in the history of college b’ball.

Since the loss in the Finals, Tech has been grossly underachieving for the talent that has been coming through there. Hewitt teams have not played smart basketball.

I agree with Sixpack. Tech has vastly underachieved year after year considering the talent. The decisions that some of these guys make have been baffling at times. I think Hewitt’s job should be on the line if they don’t show considerable improvement on the floor.

I bet Sid’s understanding and contacts in the pro game helped him convince BC to stay. It is nice to see a coach be able to convince a marginal player to stay. I think it shows they like him.

Was Costner seriously considering going pro???

  14. CedarGroveWolf 06/19/2007 at 9:43 AM #

I don’t see Costner as a 1st round pick yet. Needs better quicks for the 3 & more beef for the 4.

^ Here’s a link to some pictures from the game that State one. I’m assuming that’s the game you’re talking about. Note that this is only Gallery 1 of 3 and the links to the other two are on this page. Hope this is the game you were referring to. http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/2/615676.html

“Was Costner seriously considering going pro???”

think he wanted to “test the waters”. Now it looks like he will after this season.

  18. PackerInRussia 06/19/2007 at 11:04 AM #

^ I actually looked through those pictures and didn’t see any of anyone dunking on someone. It did have the Grant dunk. I did find a picture of Costner dunking and throwing Wright out of the way on Carolina’s Scout site. Maybe that’s the dunk you’re referring to. Since I’m in Russia, I only see the big dunks if they end up on YouTube, so I am not exactly sure which dunk you’re talking about. Hope this helps: http://northcarolina.scout.com/2/615655.html

I think everyone is expecting Costner and JJ Hickson to “test the waters” after this upcoming season. I hope we can get two more years out of both. If Costner or Hickson are going to be top 15 picks as Young probably will, then I cannot blame the guys for going pro just as I couldn’t blame Ced Simmons for going pro even though his game was not really ready. All McDonald AA choose a school that can get them to the next level, glad they picked State and if they can be a top pick next year, congrats! (Probably means we had a great season!)

Does anybody have a copy of the full game vs UNx at the RBC??
I thought I had it on tape, but when I trie to transfer it to DVD, I found that someone had taped over it (that’s what you get when the wife is not a sports fan). I would be happy to provide the blank DVD or purchase a copy. Contact me via e-mail.

I know I am not the only one who remembers Fells sweeping in on the sideline soaring through the air for a two handed dunk all over Wright?!?! he was almost parallel with the floor… it was a superman type dunk… nasty. pure nasty.

  22. TNCSU 06/19/2007 at 1:03 PM #

I’ve still got it on my DVR – I just need to figure out how to get it to DVD since my DVD recorder just broke.

Unless Costner suddenly figures out how to get a lot quicker (for defense), I don’t see him being an NBA player. Good college player though…

Last time I saw him measured, he was 6’8. So he’s not going to be a center in the NBA, he’ll have to be a power forward. And that’s actually a little short for power forward.

So I’m reasonably optimistic that we get more than a year out of him. Of course, the list of people who go pro WAAAAY too early and then spend the rest of their life looking around, wondering why the phone never rang on draft day, is a rather lengthy one.

Korleone Young….come on down! You’re the next contestant on “What the Hell Were You Thinking???”

  24. kool k 06/19/2007 at 1:28 PM #

I was reading Paul Shirley’s book recently. He dropped a Korleone Young reference, in regards to their days together with the Yakima Suns in the CBA.

Charlotte Observer ran an article the other day about the losing interest in the NBA by fans. Stated early departures and AAU were hurting NBA because by skipping college many fans don’t get to know the players before they get to the NBA. I myself think the NBA is a boring game that truly breaks down to a few isolations and a few players playing one on one most games. Plus hard to watch these high priced players not play team ball then go the Olympics and have their butts kicked by less athletic players that can actually shoot better than 50%, rebound, pass, and play defense. Plus at this stage I really have a hard time supporting a business (the NBA) that places no value on their representive’s education. If college is really about diversity and cultivatingone’s world knowledge and experience, one would think the NBA would require such for people that represent them that have such a huge exposure to society.
The really league has to be hurting if its star player, James, drew the least watched finals in modern NBA history. All I got to say is they brought it on themselves.
I predict if the league doesn’t make some drastic changes it will find itself competing with hockey for TV time. NFL, MLB way ahead and now Nascar has passed them. Seems less people more and more do not want to watch a High School graduate or college drop out with 10 tatoos put up 20 shots a game and miss 12 of them.
