State Tennis Advances to Final 8!!!

Unbelievable!!

FINALLY NC State gets some real success in a non-revenue sport not named cross country.

NC State defeated traditional tennis powerhouse, Texas, today to advance to the NCAA Final 8. We’d like to thank Texas’ internet presence for running the story of their loss while GoPack.com – at the time of this entry – still has no mention of the Pack’s big win on their website.

Of course…that (sadly) doesn’t surprise anyone.

Are you ignoring the Softball team?
I think that Wrestling & Rifle are usually pretty good too.

That’s great! I’m glad to see tennis is finally getting some attention, and that State’s team is doing so well. Anyone remember John Sadri?? I think he’s State’s best known alumni tennis player.

The next opponent appears to be Baylor who was the #2 in our “bracket” and a team that went 24-3 this season. They will play at 9AM on Saturday at Georgia.

Softball team plays South Carolina at SC from May 18-20. I am sure the answer has to do with money (ticket sales), but how in the world does the #15 seed (NCSU) not get a home regional.

NC State softball was 41-19 while SC is unranked and 34-23.

Coach Choboy and his horses are making believers of lots of the tennis world elite. Go Pack!

Lunatic, we aren’t at home because we don’t even have a field for the 2006 ACC Softball champs to play on. Fortunately the problem will be fixed next year.
I have to second the call out to GoPack.com. That site is a da#$%*& disgrace to NC State and our athletics. Does Foulup maintain that site on the side?
The son of my boss is an out of this world tennis player at 15 yrs old and I can tell you this run in the tourney is opening some eyes concerning Wolfpack tennis. Way to go Coach Choboy!

Let’s you know how much I know…thanks Pack92. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would have thought we could host somewhere in the area, but at least SC is not too far.

Whoever hired this coach in 2003 deserves a pat on the back. oh wait!

This is great news.. there have been more good pack performances this season than most. We won this match up despite losing the doubles.

John Sadri.. he lost to McEnroe in the NCAAs semis or finals once IIRC. McEnroe went to Stanford and played as a freshman, won the NCAAs and then went on the circuit.

Sadri would have been smart to not do the mohawk!

In all fairness to GoPack, it seems they were the last of four sites I’ve seen to cover the event (the first being Packpride with live comments on their free board), but their story has the most depth and coverage. maybe it takes a little longer to actually do a full write-up.

SFN: Nice to see them ‘earning’ their $$$ as the official site of NC State Athletics.

    burnbarn,

Sadri lost to John in the finals in a three set match that twice was decided by a tiebreaker…I think there were two.

Open up one of the live videos and you can get a recorded interview from Coach Choboy and one our seniors Andre Iriarte.

    TNSCU

I played golf with John Sadri last summer. Really nice guy! He was at our club in Rock Hill to play a practice round before a Carolina CGA qualifying round over the weekend. I was going to walk 9 and he asked if he could play with me. He introduced himself, but his name didn’t register. He saw my State headcovers and we talked a good bit about State while we were playing, what he was doing now, where he lived etc. He didn’t mention tennis until we finished, then told me that his “claim to fame” was losing to McEnroe in the quarterfinals at Wimbleton. Then the name rang a bell with me and I went back that night and read about that match. Jeez, what a battle!

John’s alive and well doing residential construction in Charlotte and lives in the Myers Park area. Really enjoyed playing golf and meeting him. Actually we figured out that we knew a few common business associates and old friends in the Charlotte area.

LOL! Maybe Lee did something right by investing in a new tennis facility and hiring this coach.

It’s difficult finding results anywhere – even the ncaa site only has a few results at 1030 pm

    Highstick,
Thanks for the info. Pretty interesting – my Mom lives in the Myers Park area, and is just about to start on an addition to her house — maybe she should look him up. So, what kind of golfer is he??? Does he still play any tennis? Golf is alot more fun when you get in your 40’s. ๐Ÿ™‚

Do they still have the annual bill fold weighing competition at Myers Park?

“Peaches Honey, where are all of my credit cards?”

  18. TNCSU 05/18/2007 at 9:46 AM #

Yeah, my Mom lives in the house she grew up in — it has become the “place to be” in Charlotte. I guess that’s why she’s doing an addition, her little house built in 1932 doesn’t compare to the 6000-7000 sq.ft. monsters they are building today. It is a nice area, though. My Grandfather planted all of the Willow Oaks that line Colony Road – I think he planted them in the mid 30’s.

golf is pretty damn fun at 24!

  20. TNCSU 05/18/2007 at 10:23 AM #

I concur — it’s just that competitive tennis isn’t as fun in your 40’s as it is in your 20’s…..well, I don’t know that it was THAT much fun in my 20’s, either…maybe my teens. ๐Ÿ™‚

My understanding is that John Sadri does some of those renovations so she may want to give him a call.

He was a pretty decent golfer, but didn’t make the cut in the qualifying round over that weekend. He hit the ball a lot better than me, but at 61 I’m learning that I have to play smarter and not rely on hitting the ball 275 yards anymore. Those days are gone!

I’m not sure if he’s playing any tennis anymore. He certainly looked fit enough, but who knows about knees at that age.

To be fair, State beat Clemson yesterday. There’s a nice article on gopack and in the blow, but no mention of the win on this here website…

    Thanks Highstick,
I’ll let her know — any chance you know the name of his company? I think she’s already picked out her GC, but it’s good to have some other folks she can call.
