No Soup For K!

Yes, we’re a few days late commenting on this…but it’s the “slow season.” Anyway, SFN knew more than a few Duke fans who were almost excited to have ultra-soft Josh McRoberts bolt for the NBA. “Trade McRoberts for Patrick Patterson – I’ll take that any day” was the hopeful rallying cry.

Well, Mr. Patterson will join Billy Gillispie at Kentucky instead – an early sign that the reclusive Texan is indeed ready for primetime and national recruiting wars. Side note – remember SFN has a history of noting the accomplishments and potential of Gillispie.

Just as notable – Duke is back to recruiting rather than “selecting,” it seems. It’s not like the Devils are hurting for talent – by our count, they will have 6 or 7 McDonald’s All-Americans on next year’s roster. But really – does their 2007-08 roster scare you? For the second straight year, Duke looks light years behind UNC, with the potential to be in the middle of the pack in conference play. Before ABD fans get too excited, the middle of the ACC looks much weaker than in past years. Duke may very well use their overall talent to rack up 10, 11, or even 12 ACC wins – if conference foes aren’t able to exploit Duke’s numerous weaknesses:

– Poor rebounding (here is where Duke will miss McBob the most)

– Possibly poor interior defense (Duke has always played good defense, but who can reasonably be expected to fill this void?)

– Lack of a “go to guy” late in close games (this killed Duke in conference play and in March last year)

– No low-post scoring threat (Zubek? That’s a good one!)

– Extremely vulnerable to fast PGs (thanks to VCU for providing the blueprint for 2007-08 foes)

Now tell us, does that sound like a team that’s built for March? We certainly don’t think so. Yes, Duke has lots of shooters and will be very tough to beat when hot from the perimeter. State fans have played that game before, without any ACC titles or Final Fours to show for it.

We still caution against overly aggressive expectations for next season (2008-09 is another story), but SFN thinks it’s safe to say that the only roster demonstrably better than the Wolfpack’s is Roy’s bunch in Chapel Hill (probably pre-season #1). And we know that Sid’s boys won’t back down from that fight, either – and can hold their own. This is a hell of alot of fun, isn’t it?

Sidebar – we hope our sensitive brethren at Duke Basketball Report take the “Soup Nazi” reference well, and don’t fly into another hysterical snit.

According to this piece on the N&O’s ACCNow Blog, Smith has signed and has no academic issues.

    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/index.php?title=smith_signed_and_ready_for_wolfpack&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

His HS coach is quoted as saying he is academically qualified.

I love our team next year. If it’s the same team it was on Feb 3rd and for two weeks during March.

Our guys showed how well they could perform when they left it all on the floor literally almost every night for two straight weeks in March. Unfortunately, there were too many games from November to February with an NBA regular season effort at best.

To me, the real test for Sid in his second season is to bring out that fire in January and February, or March won’t mean much.

I would love to think that Duke is looking at a down year, but I’m always hesitant to count them out. I could easily see them going the route of Villanova 2 years ago and be a very strong 4-guard lineup team (really, I can’t see any other way they can possibly go). There’s no strong post presence, but they’ve got tons of great guards that they can run at you. Nelson, Paulus, Scheyer, Henderson, McClure, Pocius, and the 3 new guys. That’s 8 strong guard/wing players who can all play, and I think Henderson and Scheyer both have potential to be really strong. Lance Thomas is about it in the middle, but I think they could follow the Villanova model to a pretty successful season.

I still can’t wait for next season to see how everybody improves and how good Hickson is. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so excited about a season.

i cant remember who posted this, but it was something to the effect of :

the three tarholes who hurt us the most are the ones that are no longer there (wright, terry, and miller).

we only lose one and gain 5 or 6 more players to a team that beat the holes once, damn near beat them again in the ACC tourney. the future is looking awesome.

c-lowe has said that hes never seen anybody so fast with the ball, referring to degand. i cant wait to see him running the break with fells and grant on the wing. GO PACK.

^^His HS coach is quoted as saying he is academically qualified.

Isn’t his coach also his Math teacher, English teacher, History teacher, Agent, and Principal of the school? 🙂 Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Anyway, Mt. Zion doesn’t have the highest reputation right now. I hope he does qualify, but if not, like several have mentioned, there are some nice prospects in ’08.

I couldn’t get the link ChemE79a posted to work, but I found it on the N&O ACCNOW site and will paste it so all can see it. Coincidentally, it is dated today.

Smith signed and ready for Wolfpack
Durham Mount Zion basketball forward Tracy Smith signed his national letter of intent with N.C. State three weeks ago and is fully qualified. Any notions to the contrary are simply not true, Mount Zion coach Antonio Fozard said Monday.

“Tracy did really well in the classroom,” Fozard said. “His last SAT got him up to 920 and his core grade point average is 3.2. He is signed, qualified and ready to go.”

Smith, a 6-7 forward ranked the 45th-best prospect in the class of 2007 by scout.com, averaged 24 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists during Mount Zion’s 21-9 2006-2007 season.

^^Has Mt. Zion been accredited by the NCAA?

I do not know….anyone, anyone, Bueller???

  11. TNCSU 05/21/2007 at 3:48 PM #

May be old news, but an interesting piece:

    http://www.msu.edu/~msuncaa/Comp%20Newsletter%20Vol%202%20Issue%201.pdf

It mentions that “the following 20 schools are
cleared for use in the NCAA
    initial eligibility process only for
    prospects entering college in fall
2006, and are subject to further
review.” Mt. Zion was on this list.

  12. primacyone 05/21/2007 at 3:50 PM #

Congratulations Tracy! You deserve it. To think where you have come from. To have the guts to get out. For your Mom to make the effort she has made. For her and you to even realize that that were options and for you and her to make the most of them. Congratulations – give those heels hell!

  13. BJD95 05/21/2007 at 3:55 PM #

I think Smith is crucial. You can’t have too much front-line depth, especially if you want to defend and rebound aggressively. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

We can speculate about 8 or so good (I woldn’t say GREAT) guards Coach K could throw at opponents. But he won’t. He’ll play 7 guys, like he always does. Even when he tries to run with a team like UNC, as he did last year (and ran completely out of gas).

  14. noah 05/21/2007 at 3:57 PM #

There’s going to be a game where someone gets hurt, where someone gets in foul trouble, where someone gets suspended or has to miss time for something and we are definitely going to need that depth at power forward.

At the very least, there will come a time when you need five fouls and someone just to do an AVERAGE job on the boards and on defense.

I couldn’t remember if Mt. Zion was waiting for accreditation or not. Raleigh Word of God was, at one time, also waiting. Glad to hear it’s all been sorted out.

  15. vtpackfan 05/21/2007 at 4:29 PM #

Awesome news about Tracy Smith if it’s true. He will give us great depth at forward. The good this does to the nature of the practices Lowe will be able to conduct is going to pay hure dividends.

First team as of preseason ’07
    pg: DEGAND pg: GONZALEZ
    sg: FELLS vs. sg: JOHNSON
    sf: GRANT sf: HORNER
    pf: COSTNER pf: SMITH
    c: MCAULEY c: HICKSON

…….Now that is a hell of a red & white game. Go Pack!

  16. TNCSU 05/21/2007 at 6:38 PM #

BJD, not sure if I concur about Smith being “crucial.” I think he’ll be a definite “plus”, and will end up being a great player, but we’ve also got Big Lew back, and that will help with depth down low. Again, we can only play 5 at a time, and I think with Ben, BC, Hickson, and Big Lew we would be okay in the 4-5 slot. That being said, he’ll be a GREAT addition. Also remember that we’ll have Thomas and Fergie coming off the bench. I concur that the RED-WHITE game will have some great match-ups. I hope we can set an attendance record!!

  17. TNCSU 05/21/2007 at 7:17 PM #

I meant to say Thomas and Fergie in addition to the others. If Courtney can get committed, he could easily be an All-ACC player next year – as could BC and Big Ben (and Hickson) — there’s alot of potential on our squad.

  18. BJD95 05/21/2007 at 7:40 PM #

Uh, Big Lew (especially a year off a serious knee injury) is in no way an adequate replacement for a Top 50 player. I would be shocked if he enters the game in a meaningful situation next year. Shocked.

Lew is a project. He’s not going to contribute as a redshirt freshman.

“c-lowe has said that hes never seen anybody so fast with the ball, referring to degand. i cant wait to see him running the break with fells and grant on the wing. GO PACK.”

Lowe actually said that?!!! I don’t know where lush got that from or if it’s true, I surely haven’t read anything close to that before now. But if it is true, well, I’ll just keep my thoughts to myself. 🙂 !!!!

  20. redfred2 05/21/2007 at 10:59 PM #

NC State signs the Rivals number ten player nationally, at his position, and it’s not “crucial” to the program?

Did I just awaken from another decade long comma? I missed something somewhere.

  21. packbackr04 05/22/2007 at 8:07 AM #

im with you red^ smith is going to be a great player, BUT, and i use the word but very gently. BUT, if Smith is going to cause problems because of his grades, we could do without him. Sid needs to make sure he goes to class and keeps his grades up.

  22. noah 05/22/2007 at 8:19 AM #

I don’t think Smith is considered to be an immediate impact guy like Hickson. I think most people think he’s going to offer some nice depth and grab a couple of rebounds and score some garbage points as a frosh, and eventually grow into a steady, solid player…

But I don’t think anyone really thinks he’s going to be a double-figure scoring and/or rebounding guy immediately.

  23. PapaJohn 05/22/2007 at 8:50 AM #

Referring to lush’s ^ post about Degand … here’s the link from the GoPack archives, but I’ll also post the key quote:

    http://www.gopack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=45818&SPID=3731&DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=833968

“Sometimes your personnel dictates that,” Lowe said. “Farnold [Degand], the point guard who was here this year and will be eligible, is an up and down guy; he can get the ball up the court as fast as anyone in the country I think. We’re going to need to take advantage of that, and we’re going to need guys to be in shape and be ready to run with him. I’d like to be able to sit over there and allow the point guard to run it and get some easy baskets.”

Do you LOVE THE SOUND OF THAT??????

  24. Lunatic Fringe 05/22/2007 at 8:58 AM #

I believe Smith is crucial for our team to play Sid’s brand of basketball and that brand of basketball is what will best position us to compete for the conference title.

I personally am tired of being on pins and needles throughout the game, because Ben/Brandon got a couple early fouls in the first half for playing physical. We played best when those guys were attacking the hoop.

Let me put it this way…Hans and Thompson are 6-7 to 6-9 and both go about 245 on the block. We need as many good bodies to go against them to wear them down as possible since we know they will never get in foul trouble. Our best chance to win next season is to take care of business inside and we need big bodies that can play inside in order to do that.

I feel really good with Costner (6-9 235), Mac (6-8 220), Hickson (6-9 220), and Smith (6-7 235) as our 4 primary guys inside. Harris, Horner, and Lew all “could” play inside, but they all have limitations to what they can do vs. guys that are 6-9 and 245.

Harris has the strength and I expect some good minutes from him as defender and rebounder, but hard to ask him to guard someone 4-5” taller. Horner has grown and will get stronger, but I like him as a match-up problem on the wing rather than low block defender. Lew is simply not going to be ready to handle someone like Hans…period.

  25. PapaJohn 05/22/2007 at 9:02 AM #

Referring to noah’s ^ comment, can anyone recall another Top 50 power forward to whom Tracy could be compared? To give us an idea of how high our expectations should be for him next year?
My strictly uneducated guess would be he plays a little every game, and we start to get an idea of his potential sometime in February and March. (and April???) Based on his profile, he does seem to have skills. He’s only 6’7″ but he weighs about the same as Ben, so he shouldn’t get shoved around too much. The article on PP about him says Lowe wants him to work on his ball handling and jump shot, so he’s probably gotten his points dominating the smaller guys in HS.

    Predictions?
