NCAA Committee extends men’s 3-point line to 20-9

Beginning with the 2008-09 season, assuming the measure is approved May 25 by the Playing Rules Oversight Committee, the line will move back a full foot to 20 feet, 9 inches. The committee chose, however, not to expand the size of the lane.

    Here’s Dickie V’s take:

Also, any definitive word on Tracy Smith’s signing?

I dont think I fully understand what the alternate possesion rule is? someone care to clear the smoke?

^Alternating possession is in case of a tie up, or what used to be a jump ball situation. Instead of a jump ball, now the ball goes over to the team with the possesion arrow. A lot of people think it is unfair to create a tie up, and then have the ball automatically go back to the offensive team. It’s an equal possession ruling no matter how tie ups one team or the other creates for themselves.

    ^no matter “many” tie ups…

Does the line moving back give a boost to a player like Trevor Fergueson in terms of having a shot at meaningful minutes. Unlike last season Coach Lowe will have plenty of players to choose from when filling the need of a back up shooting guard. We know that his offense looks to play inside out, but who could argue the importance of a timely three to keep ’em honest from Fells (or even Nieman during the ACC tourney).

I think it really helps guys like Fells and Costner. If you noticed Costner, he often put up NBA threes – and sank ’em. Fells needs to combine his three with being able to take guys off the dribble. I think if anything it will hurt players like Trevor, because I don’t think you’ll see as many threes being taken — especially in Sid’s offense — because 3 point shooting FG will definitely go down. My guess is whoever is the all-time leading 3 point shooter in NCAA history (both total made and especially 3PT FG%) will stay there for a long time after the change (i.e. I doubt if Humphrey’s record for 3 pointers made in the NCAA tourney will be broken for a while).

*NCAA will probably maintain pre and post 20’9 records, like they do with the new and old javelin weight in track and field.

I’m sure all the new records will be separated somehow, but I do think it will hurt teams that rely heavily on the three, because that one foot does make a difference.

The three-point line in 1983 in the ACC was 17-9 and I don’t think that the league keeps seperate records. Several conferences adopted the NBA line that year.

My personal opinion is that this won’t have much of an impact on three-point shooting stats…but you might see scoring and field goal percentages go up a bit just because it will spread the defense out a little more.

Passing lanes should be a little wider.

I agree with noah there. At first I thought that maybe moving the line back may bring the scoring averages down just a little, but I don’t really think so. I think after an adjustment period, that the opposite may occur. It will dictate some different thinking as to coaching stategies, but other than that, it will go pretty much unnoticed, with the exception of the announcers constant mention of it.

If there is one coach who would seem best suited to take advantage of this it is Sid.
He has the NBA experience where the line is even further. He also has proven able to get good down low shots.

This is a godo thing for NCSU basketball. Not so much for ASU.

    “I agree with noah there.”

    I win!!!! 🙂

noah, all records of my last, and very impressive, WIN, have been totally erased from the SFN record books. Future sanctions may be in the offing as well. Including the penalties, I guess you’re ahead, for now.

There plenty of posts yet to be typed, and I’m just warmin’ up. It’s a little too early to declare anything yet there. A single season in blogerydom, can last a lifetime.

I look forward to them, my friend. Let’s just stick with sports, music, movies and how much American Idol sucks.

I suppose you get to pick all the topics now too, huh? What no, ins and outs, of XM radio?

noah, I guess you know my last post was *supposed* to be funny, in my usual smart ( ! ) kind of way.

    3-point line…whatever.
    here’s the NCAA solution:
    1. eliminate counts. shot clock and game clock only.
    closely guarded doesn’t “count” anymore.
    2. eliminate backcourt. shot clock rules offense.
    3. eliminate 3-seconds. you want to stand in the lane
for 3+? go ahead. we’ll shoot over you.
    4. no charge in the lane. you want to stand there?
take the hit and give up the points on your back.
    5. finally, and in my basketball fantasy life, the first
team which scores 80 points wins.
