Archie Miller Leaves Arizona State to join Ohio State staff

NC State grad Archie Miller has bolted Herb Sendek and gone to work for Thad Matta at Ohio State. Unlike Sean (who left Sendek/NC State for Xavier) Archie is taking a big step up in stature.

Um….Sean Miller eventually became a head coach at Xavier, so I am not so sure it was not a step up. Would he be a head coach yet if he hadn’t left NCSU?

  2. Wulfpack 05/25/2007 at 7:37 AM #

Herb has produced a solid list of head coaches. Clearly, he’s a mentor to many. This is a great step for Archie. He’s bound to be a great head coach one day — it’s in his blood. Great for Wolfpack basketball.

I agree with Troy in that Sean Miller is making a significant mark at Xavier. He’s doing very well there and surely will be considered for major jobs in the near future.

I blame Archie Miller for Josh Powell’s departure. I can’t back that up. I just know if I had that cocky SOB being the senior on my squad my freshman year, then when I finally get rid of him, he comes back and its now his JOB to boss me around, I’d go play in NBADL too.

Build that resume Archie, we may need you some day!

re: sean miller, thad matta was/is a step up over zendek. That’s rather obvious now.

Archie going to work for Thad Matta at Ohio State is a solid career move independent of where he is now. Period. Congrats to him!

Maybe he can learn a real offense now.

    Brief tangent …
I believe that in the last 20 years, we the Wolfpack nation have paid a severe price and only now are things beginning to get back to the way they were. Since ‘the dark years’ we have done everything right and deserve some breaks. I belive karma is swinging our way. The link is to a great ESPN article (that does not mention the Pack) about karma stomping on thos that abuse it.

Please forgive the brief hi-jack, I thought this was so good I wanted to share it wth my Wolfpack friends.

papajohn ^ i hope you are right about karma, cause it means those peckers over in chapel hill will get their come upins for appx the next 100 years.

I’m thinking that a player of Archie Miller’s stature had better be packing an excessive amount of confidence, or he’s not playing major college basketball anywhere. No matter what, Josh Powell is going to encounter “cocky SOB”s for the rest of his life, ESPECIALLY in the NBA. But if it was really that much a problem, Josh should have privately cornered his sawed off little tormentor and made a stand for himself.

I liked Miller as a player. But he is just another in long line of NC State player, including his buddy Josh Powell there, that will not ever get their due all because of the funk that surrounded the program during those years.

I sincerely hope Miller, and any of the other guys from that period, do well in coaching though.

Wulfpack, I think maybe Pitino’s comments about ” ” being his “biggest concern” is possibly because there is no doubt ” ” is smart and can dissect whatever system he’s trying to implement. He must be very good at getting his thoughts across to people like his assistants or his former mentor Pitino there, and hopefully Miller and many others will benefit greatly from it. The problem is that while it may sound convincing in a coaches meeting it still has yet to translate to the players themselves. The actual implementation of those theories on game day, right in the heat of the battle, is something that hasn’t ever been consistent yet.

I don’t want anything to take pot shots at, I’m just interested. I’d love to hear about former NCSU players who are doing well while still involved in their athletic fields. I like to see a list of former players/now coaches from that time period.

I don’t understand the bit about Sean either.

  12. boxorice 05/25/2007 at 9:55 AM #

I’m glad he is doing well and I am very glad he doesn’t play for us anymore.

I always like Archie. His stroke reminded me of Terry Gannon’s. He would have been a good, even deadly, specialist in a deep team.

  15. CarnifeX 05/25/2007 at 10:12 AM #

He always seems like a little bitch, who brown-nosed into the coaches good graces, then turns around and sticks out his tongue at the rest of the team. Again, I can’t back any of this up, just my interpretation.

i only liked archie cause he was a short white guy. i dont remember him ever being that productive of a player though, he was good for a cheer after a made three but its not like he was gaurunteed points.

i also heard rumors that he was a punk who thought we was some sort of hot shit, dont know if its true but i dont like those kind of people

“Maybe he can learn a real offense now.”

I’d venture to say he learned a lot from Herb, including offense.

  18. lush 05/25/2007 at 10:17 AM #

    ^of course you do

  19. SuperStuff 05/25/2007 at 10:21 AM #

I always heard Thad Matta couldn’t wait to get away from Herb Sendek. Seems like Archie feels the same way if you ask me.

“I like to see a list of former players/now coaches from that time period.”

Copying my own self, but can anyone please enlighten me?

  21. beowolf 05/25/2007 at 10:38 AM #

    I agree with OneNoteWonderObsessedWolf.

Playing in the ACC under Herb, Archie had the chance to play man-to-man defense against several great offenses.

  22. Clever_Wolf_Name 05/25/2007 at 10:46 AM #

I also heard that Arch also had an assistant coach offer from Florida, but chose OSU to be closer to family. As for the personal aspersions and assumptions about his character, why? Just wish him the best and get on with things.

  23. redfred2 05/25/2007 at 10:58 AM #

Archie Miller as a player…worked his way into the program…became a valuable asset…then faded at the end.

Strike the name Archie Miller and insert “player XYZ”. How many times???

  24. PapaJohn 05/25/2007 at 11:13 AM #

Didn’t Archie get hurt and never had much afterwards?

  25. Troy 05/25/2007 at 11:16 AM #

The freshman Archie, prior to nagging injuries and being miscast as a PG, was a deadly 3 point marksman who led the league in 3-point percentage. Many of those 3’s were from well beyone the stripe as well.
