Spring Game Entry (Updated Monday Morn)

We originally posted this entry on Saturday and asked our readers to share their thoughts regarding Saturday’s spring football game. The response from the community has been awesome and our comments section includes a lot of insightful commentary.

Attendance for the day was estimated at 15,000 and the format changed from past years. ‘”The atmosphere was festive. A red-clad crowd of 14,800 showed up. Many former players came back. The band, cheerleaders and dance team helped generate a game-type buzz” (N&O) The Wolfpacker explained the following:

This year’s spring contest debuted a new format that was much more like a regular game. The teams were divided just about evenly with defensive and offensive starters gracing both rosters, as opposed to the first-string offense vs. the first-string defense format used in recent years by former coach Chuck Amato. This year’s spring game skipped over kickoffs and punts, but otherwise followed the regular football rules.

You can see some of the action yourself by simply clicking here.

Additionally:

* this entry at the N&O’s ACCNow shares great observations from the day.

* The newspaper’s more formal recap – included in its print edition – can be found by clicking here.

* Of course, we are big fans of the perspective of our friends at Section Six.

* The Wolfpacker had a quick summary that indicates the running game looked good but “the quarterback play left plenty to be desired.”

It is hard to tell ‘who is whom’ in scrimmages. This is the list of players that started on Saturday.

* Remember that DeMario Pressley did not play because of injury.

* It is nice to see Julian Williams and Jeraill McCuller starting on the offensive line. The redshirt sophomores have had two years to develop physically and emotionally and will be called upon to make the difference this year on a line that has a solid core with Curtis Crouch and Luke Lathan serving as anchors.

* We must mention that freshman, Jimmaul Simmons returned an interception 100 yards for the White.

Perhaps the most important component of the weekend was the turnout of 200-250 former NC State football players that responded to Coach O’Brien’s invitation to please come back for the weekend and get re-attached to the program. (We say “re-attached” because many of the alums felt shut-out from the program by the style in which Chuck Amato chose to run things.) The N&O focused on this topic with a nice article calling O’Brien the “Head of the Family”. This article is full of interesting comments. The following is just a tease from the piece:

Soon after O’Brien was hired, he asked to have lunch with members of the media and didn’t dish out any sarcasm with the sandwiches. He also met with former State players to hear their concerns, their suggestions.

At times, the Murphy Football Center seemed to be Amato’s private domain and reserved for his players, past and present. O’Brien has opened the doors. Plaques have placed on the outside back wall at the concourse level, honoring each of the former NCSU head coaches, including Amato.

“I like his style, his approach,” said former All-America receiver Torry Holt, an All-Pro receiver for the St. Louis Rams. “He’s in control. Now, we all want to see the product he puts on the field.”

Holt was one of the former players who turned out Friday night at the Vaughn Towers reception, munching on chicken wings, seeing old teammates, retelling old stories. Everyone agreed such an event had never been held under any Wolfpack coach.

“I’ve been told this is long overdue,” O’Brien said in addressing the group. “It’s a phenomenal first start. We’d like to make it a tradition and make it better.”

play calling ,using clock , players being coached , going down field with passes, and i cannot say how importent a good front line will be is what kind of season we will have . i think we have a coach that can get all this done .

well i was trying to give LF the benefit of the doubt. i agree about the win total. maybe seven plus a bowl victory. i believe TOB has a great bowl record.

“Otherwise we are playing the same hand we had last year.”

I think we more or less agree on that. What we may disagree on is the level of competition faced in the ACC. WF had enough of the same hand left over from a unremarkable ’05 team, plus a QB named Riley Skinner that frankly no one thought too highly of at the start of ’06.

Maybe last year was just a weird year, but from what I remember games were just plain whacky and unpredictable. I think Maryland went on a win streak at one point in which every game they were outgained offensively. Clemson was blowing games because they couldn’t keep opponents from blocking field goals. Al Groh suspended a good portion of the type of players you talk of above, and they still beat our tails.

    We’ll see.

I just remember Noah’s basketball prediction was horribly wrong so hopefully he’s consistent.
If given the same talent, I think TOB and staff are worth 2 to 3 more wins per season than our previous staff and I’ll leave it at that.

Lots of pessimism in here. I agree with class of 74 on this: “If given the same talent, I think TOB and staff are worth 2 to 3 more wins per season than our previous staff and I’ll leave it at that.” Reasons for this include better position coaching, game coaching, play calling, and discipline.

noah said: “I think we’ll be a little better this year, but our OL is still young and I still don’t think DE is an upper-tier ACC caliber quarterback.” Perhaps I am naive, but I don’t think an upper-tier ACC QB is required for an upper-tier ACC record. Our offense will be built around the run, and we should definitely have an upper-tier ACC running game.

7 of our 9 losses last season were by 8 points or less. Those are the kind of games that coaching matters and can make the difference between winning and losing.

As a note, there were a few pictures in the mix that showed our crowd attendance.

But I’m forced to agree that the media coverage was still lacking in that regard, and it seems that the NCSU SID hasn’t totally picked up on the need for positive media attention any time its available. Heck, look at Sidney’s class coming in next year and all the positive press he’s received – anyone else think those two things aren’t related at all?

As for the team, I’m going to go with some of the more optomistic predictions in this thread and hope that given the new staff and (possibly more importantly) the new system, our boys are going to do significantly better than a normal “stats – graduating seniors + incoming freshman / generally team athleticism + football IQ” prediction might have us to believe.

Actually – these things are happening – as far as I can tell – in spite of our SIDs office. Like I said, it makes no sense to put the cameras on the same side of our fans. If you watched a news report, you would have thought that there were LESS people at our game than in Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. Then, to try and thread the needle on attendance “14800” when there were AT LEAST THAT MANY THERE, IF NOT MORE….It’s really marketing 101 – I hope there’s a rational reason for these mistakes.

  10. Running Wolf 04/16/2007 at 8:16 AM #

I am pleased to see we are off to a Great start…first with Wolfpack fan attendance…second the former players coming to provide support…for the frist time since I can remember both the fans and former players were made to feel like CF was our House. I would not put a great deal of stock into good or bad play at the spring Red & White game…heck the team was split up and regardless it is kinda like the ole days of a tie…”kissing your sister”. I am more impressed with the feeling like we are going to do something and Sidney has done the same for the Mens BB program…I was there and I was proud and felt like a fan again! GO PACK!

There was a great crowd during the first half. However at half time — there was another big crowd walking out.

Does that suggest anything? Is that normal? Maybe they were satisfied and figured they didn’t need to see any more? Thoughts?

  12. choppack1 04/16/2007 at 8:50 AM #

BoKnows – Good question. This is more of a family/get together event than a regular football game. I’m guessing a lot of folks w/ kids headed home and others went out to the parking lot to socialize.

  13. noah 04/16/2007 at 8:52 AM #

If TOB is worth 2-3 more wins per season, then my prediction looks pretty reasonable. I’m saying four to five wins, which is right in the same ballpark.

I’m a little curious about what the reaction will be to the playcalling. If the Spring Game is any early indication, we might be in for some interesting times. Last year, I heard lots of grumbling in the stands about how we ran the ball too much and we didn’t throw the ball down the field enough.

Well, I can pretty much guarantee you that we’re going to run the ball a lot this year…but we certainly DID throw the ball down the field a lot on Saturday. Of course, a lot of those passes got picked off. And if the DBs didn’t have Eric Leak-esque hands, we would have seen many more.

    Attendance for Spring games:

    NC State: 14,800
    UNC: 8,000

    Great updated entry, SFN.

As for predictions, I always give a wide latitude for football, owing to the influence of injuries.

I think this team really ought to have a winning season. To predict another losing season would be to think we are no better off with TOB & Staff as we were with Amato & Staff. I think we will be better in the W’s. We’re still not world-beaters, but I think we’ve got enough base talent to win at least 6, so I’ll project 6-9 wins.

Last year, based on the completely erroneous but optimistic thinking that Amato had “turned the corner” midseason in 2005 and had gotten ahold of the discipline problems, I had projected the same. A disciplined team in red last season could have challenged for the ACC title, given how pitiful the whole conference was.

Its only YEAR ONE of the Tom O’Brien era and I wasn’t planning on implementing “Contender” expectations until year three. This year is really up in the air. We could win 4 or we could win 8.
Taking a realistic look at our schedule –

    vs Central Florida
    @ BC
    vs Wofford
    vs Clemson
    vs Louisville
    @ FSU
    @ ECU
    vs Virginia
    @ Miami
    vs UNC
    @ Wake
    vs Maryland

Games I think we’ll win: CF, Woff, Virginia
Games we could win: @ECU, @Miami, UNC

I’d be extremely happy with a .500 record (and bowl eligible) this year and won’t be disappointed with anything over four wins.

Thanks for input but I still think an optorectomy may be neded.

“Games I think we’ll win: CF, Woff, Virginia
Games we could win: @ECU, @Miami, UNC ”

I think we could add @BC, @Wake and maybe even Maryland to the “games we could win” category. BC lost a lot from last year, and Wake lost a lot on defense. Also, Wake won’t sneak up on anyone this year – the whole conference will be gunning for them. Maryland could be tough, but we will have them at home for the last game of the season. I don’t think 7-5 is unrealistic and if the stars line up just right (no injuries, particularly to O line, solid QB play, RB’s running like they did Saturday, opportunistic secondary coming up with turnovers, and special teams like we had in Amato’s first four years), an 8 or 9 win season is entirely possible. Yes, I am very much the optimist, but I saw a lot of good things Saturday.

One thing I haven’t heard much comment on was the “meet and greet” after the game. I think that was a great idea. My wife and I walked through and people, especially kids, were really enjoying mingling with the players. Most of the players seemed to like it, too. Jimmal SImmons was holding court and introducing himself to everyone that came up. Donald Bowens and John Dunlap, in particluar, were very nice and easy to talk with. Ant Hill and Marcus Stone really seemed to enjoy taking pictures with the kids and talking to fans. Ant will have carpal tunnel syndrome from doing the “Wolfpack sign” so much. All-in-all, it was a great family outing day, even for those (like myself) with no kids. I definitely think it was the best spring game experience I have ever had.

I agree. The reverse call on 3 and 10 in the red zone comes to mind. (At the time the white team was up by 7 – they made the field goal to build a 10 point lead, but you know.)

We did throw the ball down field more. I think we’ll see a more conservative offense that utilizes better collegiate principals rather than NFL principals.

“Last year, I heard lots of grumbling in the stands about how we ran the ball too much and we didn’t throw the ball down the field enough.”

I’m not surprised by anything I see anymore with quotes like these. Since you are so good at prediction I’ll let you pick my lotto numbres pal! Am I wrong to assume you are one of these grumblers? Because averaging about 24 carries a game last year between 3 RB’s who could probably start at most any other school in the country, is hardly running too much. Some of our fans need to put the bottle and the pipe down and try some breathing excercises or something. And if they can’t do that then go kick a cat or something. Not running the damn ball enough is why the old staff got booted out of The Murphy Center.

With more concentration and focus around the running game and taking our shots down field when they present themselves will only make this team better and hardly a 4 or 5 win team. For reference look at the team about 100 miles west of Raleigh. Coaching, focus, and execution = wins. Obviously Coach O’Brien hasn’t coached a down here yet, but how can anyone dispute this coaches track record?

  21. SternWolf 04/16/2007 at 10:26 AM #

I think the average TOB team would be worth 1 or 2 more wins than the average CTC team, based on better discipline, hopefully better play calling, and smarter coaching decisions toward the end of game. Last year’s team got one win that perhaps it shouldn’t, but several losses that it really shouldn’t have had.

We must remember that last year was not an average CTC year. It was a perfect storm of ridiculous losses. Last year’s team should have had at least 5 wins. In that sense, last year, I think CTC got us to a -2 wins (if not more). If I think TOB is worth 1 to 2 more wins, I think we get at least 6-7 wins this year.

Looking at the schedule I see no reason to revise that number down. I have no problem with Noah being pessimistic, it’s his right, and he’s a valued poster here and elsewhere. But I would disagree regarding 4-5 wins. I think we get 6 or 7 and maybe an 8th.

Granted this is heavy speculation without accounting for injuries and development of new key personnel.

NONE of the QB’s looked particularly sharp Saturday. But Evans looked the best of the bunch.

But to be brutally honest, picking a QB between the 3 would be akin to picking between the fat chick, the pale chick, and the bad teeth chick at closing time.

    My picks would be:

vs Central Florida — A healthy team, can’t be flat against a very good CF team). Should be a W. Lose this one and you might want to put some tickets on E-Bay.

@ BC Most likely an L but with new coach and Stve Logan et al in sharge — and new wrinkles in the offense — we might pull a W off as most of the attention is on the Red Sox and there are more peopel yelling Wolf and Pack then B and C.

vs Wofford Win — If we lose this one. Ticket face values drop below Duke’s prices on E-Bay.

vs Clemson Loss likely because Clemson usually does not start choking until after the 6th or 7th game. We scheduled this one too early. Not enough injured Tigers yet.

vs Louisville Loss (defense too strong and offense too good)
Could be ugly. Combined score just over 80 points.

@ FSU Loss (they come in with that “Chuck em” attitude.
DL will be hurting from prior week >50 point OL scorefest )
Several linebackers for FSU almost give this to us on penalties.

@ ECU Win (revenge plus they have never seen our offense)

vs Virginia Win. Va getting better but not ready for the new Pack.
    TOB wins this one.

@ Miami Loss (Will be a win if most of the team is suspended for fighting and other off field infractions by then.)

vs UNC Win (to set the mood, TOB comes out in the red jacket)

@ Wake W — TOB wins this one but we try to give it back. Too ecstatic over the prior weeks V.

vs Maryland Again — playing MD for a chance at a bowl game. What the heck — Pack wins on a Justin Burke TD to Toney Baker at the end.

And I’m probably over optimistic on this.
