Spring Game Entry (Updated Monday Morn)

We originally posted this entry on Saturday and asked our readers to share their thoughts regarding Saturday’s spring football game. The response from the community has been awesome and our comments section includes a lot of insightful commentary.

Attendance for the day was estimated at 15,000 and the format changed from past years. ‘”The atmosphere was festive. A red-clad crowd of 14,800 showed up. Many former players came back. The band, cheerleaders and dance team helped generate a game-type buzz” (N&O) The Wolfpacker explained the following:

This year’s spring contest debuted a new format that was much more like a regular game. The teams were divided just about evenly with defensive and offensive starters gracing both rosters, as opposed to the first-string offense vs. the first-string defense format used in recent years by former coach Chuck Amato. This year’s spring game skipped over kickoffs and punts, but otherwise followed the regular football rules.

You can see some of the action yourself by simply clicking here.

Additionally:

* this entry at the N&O’s ACCNow shares great observations from the day.

* The newspaper’s more formal recap – included in its print edition – can be found by clicking here.

* Of course, we are big fans of the perspective of our friends at Section Six.

* The Wolfpacker had a quick summary that indicates the running game looked good but “the quarterback play left plenty to be desired.”

It is hard to tell ‘who is whom’ in scrimmages. This is the list of players that started on Saturday.

* Remember that DeMario Pressley did not play because of injury.

* It is nice to see Julian Williams and Jeraill McCuller starting on the offensive line. The redshirt sophomores have had two years to develop physically and emotionally and will be called upon to make the difference this year on a line that has a solid core with Curtis Crouch and Luke Lathan serving as anchors.

* We must mention that freshman, Jimmaul Simmons returned an interception 100 yards for the White.

Perhaps the most important component of the weekend was the turnout of 200-250 former NC State football players that responded to Coach O’Brien’s invitation to please come back for the weekend and get re-attached to the program. (We say “re-attached” because many of the alums felt shut-out from the program by the style in which Chuck Amato chose to run things.) The N&O focused on this topic with a nice article calling O’Brien the “Head of the Family”. This article is full of interesting comments. The following is just a tease from the piece:

Soon after O’Brien was hired, he asked to have lunch with members of the media and didn’t dish out any sarcasm with the sandwiches. He also met with former State players to hear their concerns, their suggestions.

At times, the Murphy Football Center seemed to be Amato’s private domain and reserved for his players, past and present. O’Brien has opened the doors. Plaques have placed on the outside back wall at the concourse level, honoring each of the former NCSU head coaches, including Amato.

“I like his style, his approach,” said former All-America receiver Torry Holt, an All-Pro receiver for the St. Louis Rams. “He’s in control. Now, we all want to see the product he puts on the field.”

Holt was one of the former players who turned out Friday night at the Vaughn Towers reception, munching on chicken wings, seeing old teammates, retelling old stories. Everyone agreed such an event had never been held under any Wolfpack coach.

“I’ve been told this is long overdue,” O’Brien said in addressing the group. “It’s a phenomenal first start. We’d like to make it a tradition and make it better.”

some stats and remarks from the Fay Observer

The new QBs seemed to have strong arms but there were too many lob passes for thirty yards that just hung up there waiting for the D to collect and intercept it although our DBs couldn’t catch anything. Some of the short slants had some zip and I feel that may be what we need to do this season until the new QBs get some game time. I expect that Daniel will start the new season.

Just saw the first half. The running game looked good. Baker is a load. Evans experience really paid off and he looks a little ahead of B & B at the QB spot. The game format was a hit and I think the players will grow from what they saw and went through today. The crossing patterns we went to in the second qtr were working well. Several ill advised passes, but much to look forward to this fall. We have ourselves a great coach. Very nice crowd, more the 15k total in my estimation.

“So who was driving the yellow sports car parked beside the Murphy Center?”

That was Mario Williams, he passed me on Trinity shortly after the game.

I watched the game also. Running game looked good. Passing was scary and risky. A well coached defense would eat them up. But hell it was just a scrimmage and they tell the kids to go for it. I don’t know which QB is best. I left with a sinking feeling. Kinda like Noah — doubt we will go to a bowl but I wish them the best.

    DJ,

Daniel Polk was #10. Soph Walk-on QB from Cary High

  7. dj9686 04/14/2007 at 9:36 PM #

Hey, thank you Evrocck. I appreciate that.

I realize Butch has cancer but my Dad went through four years of that treatment without it dropping his weight and making him look so bad so fast. Truly, I pray Butch is cured.

  8. gannon 04/14/2007 at 9:37 PM #

Where was Jay Smith? I didn’t see him on either roster. I wanted to see this guy in action.

  9. dj9686 04/14/2007 at 9:38 PM #

When did you leave, Noah? I left with a lot of questions in my mind about the team but hardly “a sinking feeling.”

  10. dj9686 04/14/2007 at 9:38 PM #

    Still in HS, Gannon?

  11. dj9686 04/14/2007 at 9:39 PM #

or was he from last year’s squad? Now I can’t remember.

Anybody else notice how Stone was playing at tight end?? He was throwing some really good blocks and running clean routes!

IMHO, Stone is the personification of “team player”. Yanked from his natural position after losing the starting job, he could have sulked, he could have transferred but…no! He stuck with it, is learning the position, and seems to be happy just to be at NC State! If the rest of the team picks up on that and follows Stone’s lead, this team could be really scary!

From what I’ve read it’s been a rough transition for him mentally more than physically. Anthony Hill has been helping him a lot with understanding blocking schemes and how to run the routes. Obviously it’s been a while for him. The neat thing is that his older brother (who was a DII QB I think?) has a rocket for an arm and Marcus played a lot of catch with him even recently which should help. Let me emphasize again, his older brother throws HARD. I agree that if this type of selflessness catches on, nothing but good things can come of it.

A very fun spring game. I thought it was very well organized and I think if people knew TOB was going to let them line up and play the way he did even more people would have been there. But still one of the best crowds for a spring game that I’ve seem. Music been played, former players all over the place, and the #1 draft pick from the NFL it was a great atmosphere. As far as the game, I felt the offense seemed a step better than the defense. I think the defense has some ground to make up.

The Offense seems fine. Beck has 1 hell of an arm. The Line gave Beck all day to pass on several occasions. The LB’ers were nowhere to be seen. I am worried about the D.

I definitely agree about having the old players on the sidelines and in the stands. My Dad played at Carolina, and goes back every year for the Letterman’s reunion during the Blue/White game weekend – this weekend for them also. They had a golf tournament and dinner on Friday, and a BBQ before their game yesterday. I’m really surprised that we haven’t done more activities like that in the past. I hope TOB keeps it going, and establishes a great tradition. I’m not sure if I’d be extremely worried about the D — sorta like an All-State game, I think Defense takes a back seat – and I’m sure they didn’t want to go full out and clock one of our starters, then put them out for the season — just a thought.

The Pale Rider has indeed incurred some physical appearance effects from his chemo. Only one treatment to go and the effects should then rapidly reverse themselves. I was with him Friday night and his energy level is uneffected.

He IS the real deal and has brought a very obvious change in culture to UNC Football ….. as is apparently the case w/ TO’B. These two high quality individuals will be excellent examples to the respective fan bases of the finer elements of sports …. both for participants and spectators.

That both programs made key changes …. and both went for the same sort of high quality character-types is most definitely A GOOD THING!

RBs looked great. Baker is so smooth. Eugene ran great, but coughed it up a couple times (as previously mentioned). AB is strong.

I liked Burke best of the QBs. Daniel hit the DBs in the hands several times.

Jimmaul Simmons is going to be a player.

I spoke to Marcus Stone after the game & told him he was handling his position change like a real pro. He received a warm round of applause from fans after his first catch.

  19. gannon 04/15/2007 at 9:58 AM #

Thanks dj9686. It didn’t really hit me until I read your reply.

  20. dj9686 04/15/2007 at 10:10 AM #

That’s OK, Gannon. I kept looking on the sidelines for the QB, Wilson, from Virginia, hoping to see him play. Then I was like, “Oh yeah, they don’t graduate until June.

I was really hoping to see the german, Herr Kuhn. There is just something very cool about having a german linebacker on your team.

I have to say I’m a little miffed at the media coverage of our spring game:

Here in the triad, not one of the evening news report discussed or showed the attendance. On the 3 news report that I witnessed, all three at least showed highlights, but never showed the crowd.

IMHO, there was a huge difference between the crowds at the Wake game, the Carolina game and ours. I don’t know if it’s NC States fault – keeping the camera folks on the same side as the fans or just the media not wanting to show our enthusiasm, but it was disappointing. Further aggravating was that they made a big deal about Wake’s attendance – which occurs on their practice field. (I imagine for Wake this was strong attendance.) However, I don’t see how anyone could actually attend our game and not mention the attendance.

  23. Buddygreen 04/15/2007 at 11:49 AM #

I hear yea Choppack. Lots of reference to Carolina Spring game here in Charlotte Observer, article and comments. State got a whopping three sentences like an after thought. Maybe our media relations people need to do a better job of playing up to the media. Really need to improve our exposure in the Charlotte area. Lots of really good HS football in the Charlotte area now.

  24. dj9686 04/15/2007 at 11:50 AM #

Well, Choppack the N&O did mention how many people we had show up for our game but I noticed no mention of UNC’s attendance. Also WRAL and other news stations all shot their coverage from the fans side of the field. So, it looked like no one at all showed up for the game. I doubt it was the media’s choice in this case. Also by staying on the fans side of the field they could show half-time when the former players were honored without having to move to the other side of the field. It was disappointing but I assume there were logistical reasons for it.

I was particularly pleased with the OL. They stucked to their assignments or switched off well when the defense stunteds on pass plays, and executed here blocking assignments well on runs They were very aggressive and didn’t make very many mental errors. If we stay healthy, we sholud be able to move the ball on anybody.
