Spring Football Attendance

NC State 15,000
UNC-CH (announced) 8,000

We proclaim “announced” because eye-witness accounts from Carolina’s message boards indicated a number closer to 2,500 – 3,000. Then the number got revised to 5,000. Then NC State’s attendance was announced and Carolina’s number suddenly got revised up to 8,000. Amazing! If you have seen any of the photographs from Carolina’s spring game you MAY be able to get to 8,000 appendages if you are lucky.

Same day.

Same weather.

Programs are in the same situation – both with new coaches.

In fact, Carolina hired the higher profile new coach who pieced together a much more ‘exciting’ recruiting class that signed in February. Therefore, anticipation in Chapel Hill should be at an all-time high.

Instead…NC State’s spring game attendance dwarfed Carolina’s by a total of 200% to 500% depending on what estimates that you choose to believe.

Any recruits out there paying attention?

I wonder if that’s what got Mario all revved-up?

Carolina fans simply do NOT care about football. If basketball is going well, football is purely a social event.

I really don’t know why they waste their time and money on the fish tank, the stadium, the program, the coaches…they just do not care.

No surprises. Same story about estimating attendance at UNC-CH as usual.

  4. highonlowe 04/18/2007 at 8:23 AM #

Word has it that their game coincided with the spring sale at crate & barrel.

Maybe there wasn’t enough wine and cheese…

    highonLowe…..good stuff!

This is completely unfair to UNC-CH fans. They were properly focused on Delvon Roe’s press conference on Tuesday.

Did Duke have a spring game? Just wondering. Actually, any word about the defending ACC Champion’s game? (I couldn’t bring myself to actually name them)

branjawn – I live in Winston and both announcers commented on the attendance for this game – saying “great attendance and lots of interest from Wake Forest fans.”

It’s important to note that Wake’s game wasn’t at Groves stadium but was on campus on their practice field. Still, it looked like fans surrounded the stadium at least 2-4 people deep. This is great attendance for a Wake game.

Once again, I have to express frustration at our folks effort to thread the needle on attendance rather than take an overestimated swag like they do in Chapel Hill. Also, I once again have to state how foolish it is to have folks film from the same side of the part of the stadium that’s full so our attendance looks worse than other schools.

UNC FB recruited well when they were doing badly on the field, why would recruits worry about the spring FB crowd size? As long as they stay good in BB that helps them in FB recruiting.

^ I saw some wake game coverage on the local TV. It looked like the game was played on a practice field and on the end of the field that i saw, it looked like people were standing 4-5 deep along the sideline and end zone.

Sometimes I wonder why NCS Sports Marketing and the Ath Dept don’t read these message boards. If they did, maybe next year they would put some thought into where the film crews set up relative to the fans. I mean, that’s one of hundreds of good ideas that have been presented on SFN.

Direwolf, I don’t know about cheese but I’m sure there was plenty of whine.

BTW, ACCNow (N and Blow) has write ups on the Dook game. k

Bran – since when has the lunatic fringe had a good idea?

I try not to make assumptions when I write these things because the SID may have tried to do it, but met resistance from the coaching staff…in which case, hey, we get the coverage we deserve. However, if I’m the SID and TOB says, “I don’t want the cameras on the other side.” I say, “You know Tom, when they show highlights of the spring game on the news, folks will be looking at empty stands. However, if we allow them to film from the other side, it will look like we’ve got 35K here. Think about what that looks like to high school players and high school coaches.”

Of course, on the evening news in Boston, I doubt they even showed highlights of the spring football game.

I also think it’s interesting that our spring game outdrew BC’s game vs. Buffalo last year (when they were 6-1.)

What the hell is wrong with you people? If Carolina says they had more fans than were actually there, then damnit, they had more fans than were actually there. C’mon!

“Did Duke have a spring game?”

    Yep, they’re 0-1.

  17. Mr O 04/18/2007 at 9:35 AM #

Did anyone ever find pictures of the crowd at the UNC game?

SFN: Go to Inside Carolina. A ton of pictures of the empty stands

  18. FullMoonRising 04/18/2007 at 9:36 AM #

    Typical.

Once they have a couple of winning seasons they will feel safe wearing their UNC gear during Football season.

1 – Was thinking the same about the video of our game. It makes no sense to have everyone sit on the same side as the cameras. As unfortunate as it may be, perception is reality.

2 – The story on comparative attendance is not in any way surprising to me. We have passionate fans. uncch doesn’t. It’s the way it’s been for as long as I’ve been alive…

  20. wolfonthehill 04/18/2007 at 10:34 AM #

And Direwolf – you happen to live in Lancaster? If so, I happen to have moved from Apex to Chapel Hill recently. How are you, bro?

I’m amazed they were able to find that more than a dozen Carolina fans anytime other than directly after beating us, when every annoying Walmart fan who’s been telling you they’re “not a Carolina football fan” all year suddenly becomes one.

Caulton Tudor was at UNC’s spring game and in his Sunday write-up he said there were a ‘few thousand spectators’. we may be arguing semantics, but a few to me means 3 to 5.

  24. branjawn 04/18/2007 at 11:09 AM #

A few is def not 8. Unless I’m having a ‘few’ doughnuts at Krispy Kreme.

  25. packbackr04 04/18/2007 at 11:10 AM #

i like how they guesstimated their attendance in an upward direction, while the brain trust at NC State chose to belittle the fans YET AGAIN by stating there were less people in attendance than there clearly were…. by several thousand mind you! way to go Lee. way to go
