No Surprise – Brandan Wright to the NBA

It isn’t a big surprise…but, it is welcome news for NC State and the rest of the ACC. (Link)

North Carolina freshman forward Brandan Wright will announce he is declaring for the NBA Draft on Monday afternoon at a 4 p.m. ET news conference, according to his former summer coach.

With Wright, the Tarheels were undoubtedly projected as the #1 team in America going into next season. Even without Wright, the Tarheels will sit atop many polls to start the season as their core star power of Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough will have PLENTY of experienced support with Bobby Frasor, Marcus Ginyard, Danny Green, Alex Stepheson, Quentin Thomas and Deon Thompson.

If the Tarheels project an obvious hole in their roster next year then it is the role that Reyshawn Terry played this year — a true versatile wing at the 3F spot who can create and shoot with ample effectiveness from the outside.

With all of this returning talent, expect Roy Williams to hold on to the scholarship for the 2008 recruiting year. Carolina is already being mentioned on the top of the list for MANY of the Top 25 players in the country in 2008.

“Pakfanistan – I think part of the problems was that he tried to change his shot.”

    yep”

well than, cant I blame THAT on Herbie?!?!?!

    ; )

Sportswriter in Denver quoted an unidentified Nuggets coach when Hodge was in Denver as saying, “we drafted a shooting guard that can’t shoot.” Hodge had a very unorthodox shot coming out of HS. But he could shoot. While at State the coaching staff tried to fix his shooting mechanics. Hodge’s field goal percentage has been bad ever since. Hodge misses standard jump shots that he needs to be able to knock down night in and night out. Other than that Hodge has a very good all around game. George Karl praised his defensive play.

Hodge was great at getting to the basket and drawing the foul, or somehow getting off shots in traffic and scoring a lot more often than not, with shots that looked no less awkward than his jumpshot form. He could put pressure on any interior player in the league and cause them to foul out of pure frustration. Possibly causing them sit and become non-factors in many a game. But NOOOO, like so many others from back then, that wasn’t the way, and his skills were never used to their fullest at NCSU. There was an infinite number three point shots to be taken out there, and damnit, we were going to make sure we heaved more than our share.

“his skills were never used to their fullest at NCSU. ”

Hodge had the green light to do pretty much whatever he wanted to do at NCSU.

I don’t whether I want to be wrong in this or not, but I see SOME of the same factors that others have eluded to involving T Hanbrough’s placement in the NBA draft, also being true at the moment for B Costner. But some of that in Costner’s case may be contributed to having to play with less of a supporting cast, where he has had to do more, and hasn’t been able to work on any one or two facets of his game. Not saying he is not already very good, mind you, and headed in a direction to be a great player at NCSU, just saying that to date he has had to do more all over the court, and maybe he’ll develop even more rapidly once he is able concentrate on a more limited set of responsibilities.

True. Hodge did have a greenlight to go inside, challenge anyone, at anytime, and he did. He was very successful and he did it alot. All in very crowded conditions and against two and three players at a time. There no one to dish to, no one to follow the shot when he missed, and he did it all by himself. Is there any wonder that he got frustrated as time went by and the offense was never adapted to match his skills?

“Hodge had the green light to do pretty much whatever he wanted to do at NCSU.”

Put on your thinking cap Cedar because this will require more thought than you are used to putting into something (anything past “Herb Rulez!!” seems to be beyond your capability) but could that not have been part of the problem?

A coach should be putting his players in the best postion for them to score not expecting them to do it all on their own. This year was the perfect example of that.

I know this post will be caught by your “they are criticizing my hero and so I must defend him at all cost to logic” filter but I will be dumbfounded if you still cannot see that good coaches set their players up to score not pass the ball aroudn the outside and heave up a three.

“good coaches set their players up to score not pass the ball aroudn the outside and heave up a three.”

it’s sad to think that there are folks who actuall think that’s what Herb’s O was. How in the world did they win as many games as they did with the O being “jacking up 3’s? It’s simply amazing.

  9. redfred2 04/25/2007 at 10:20 AM #

    Cedar

A player like Hodge could have made everyone around him so much better, and gotten everyone more involved. Whether he did it directly by passing the ball off or the others were taught and learned to put themselves in the correct positions on the court to benefit from his aggressive play. Bad thing was though, the other players had to be somewhere within shouting distance for it to have benefitted them.

  10. redfred2 04/25/2007 at 10:22 AM #

Cedar, don’t lump it all up again. For once in your life, please answer to the specifics posed here.

  11. Rick 04/25/2007 at 10:31 AM #

Like I said, he cannot get past the “Herb is being slandered” so I must make a worthless and irrelevent post attitude. The only way to continue to support Herb is to completely check your brain at the door. No rational thinking human being can justify his lack of success.

Look at every post he makes. He copies someone’s statement and then tries to refute it with vague references using only two sentences.

No meat to his posts, no proof. All he does it post “nah, nah, nah”.

“Bad thing was though, the other players had to be somewhere within shouting distance for it to have benefitted them.”

Umm, Hodge avg almost 5 asststs/game his sr yr.

“A coach should be putting his players in the best postion for them to score not expecting them to do it all on their own”

Herb’s system put players in positions to win but also allowed creative players to do their thing. Hodge is a great example. THose who think the syatem was just jacking up 3’s show their ignorance. Carry on.

  13. redfred2 04/25/2007 at 11:08 AM #

Uh, Cedar, typo on your post up there. Too many S’s. I think you meant to type “player” and “position”, without all of those unnecesary S’s attached.

    To borrow from own post…

“Herb’s system put players in positions to win BUT…”

Oh well, I think that tired old horse has been riden quiet enough.

But is it as bright as the past, or as bright as it could be if…? I think that’s really all that Cedar is trying to get through to us morons.

I have a mental picture of a 6 yo kid with his fingers in his ears saying “la,la,la,la,la,la”

Two interesting notes: WPTF is out & WRAL is in as the flagship station for the Pack. And, Javi signed.

    Cedar

Now that is some of the most enlightning commentary that I’ve seen on here to date. We need to get the word out to the really good posters and tell the owner’s of this site to bar the doors.

There’s a new sheriff in town, and talk is cheap.

“I can’t really say why or let you know what I’m thinking, because I can’t formulate an answer. But I can always repeat what you said.”

Sorry Cedar, I was thinking back a few years when my daughters were first learning to speak. Don’t let any of that bother you though.
