No Surprise – Brandan Wright to the NBA

It isn’t a big surprise…but, it is welcome news for NC State and the rest of the ACC. (Link)

North Carolina freshman forward Brandan Wright will announce he is declaring for the NBA Draft on Monday afternoon at a 4 p.m. ET news conference, according to his former summer coach.

With Wright, the Tarheels were undoubtedly projected as the #1 team in America going into next season. Even without Wright, the Tarheels will sit atop many polls to start the season as their core star power of Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough will have PLENTY of experienced support with Bobby Frasor, Marcus Ginyard, Danny Green, Alex Stepheson, Quentin Thomas and Deon Thompson.

If the Tarheels project an obvious hole in their roster next year then it is the role that Reyshawn Terry played this year — a true versatile wing at the 3F spot who can create and shoot with ample effectiveness from the outside.

With all of this returning talent, expect Roy Williams to hold on to the scholarship for the 2008 recruiting year. Carolina is already being mentioned on the top of the list for MANY of the Top 25 players in the country in 2008.

Costner, Hickson, McCauley versus Hansbrough, Stephenson, Thompson.

UNC will have a backcourt advantage against us next year, but not in the frontcourt.

  2. primacyone 04/23/2007 at 1:50 PM #

We whooped themm this year, we will will whoop them next year! That’s all that really matters.

  3. CedarGroveWolf 04/23/2007 at 2:07 PM #

    who will guard Grant?

  4. StateFans 04/23/2007 at 2:09 PM #

^ That is a good question. Who will guard Grant AND/OR Fells?

It’s just a abnormality…but, it is interesting to think that the THREE guys on their team that played the best against us this year are all gone — Terry, Wright and Wes Miller.

  5. Mr O 04/23/2007 at 2:42 PM #

    Hansbrough against us
    24/8
    20/7
    15/3

    T. Lawson
    21/7
    20/5
    13/4

Wish these guys were gone too πŸ™‚

Danny Green and Ellington should be able to handle the three. It should be a very interesting matchup against them next season.

For us to match them the following year, we are going to need a strong recruiting haul considering what the Heels are likely to bring and us losing Grant, Costner and Hickson potentially.

  7. CedarGroveWolf 04/23/2007 at 2:58 PM #

O, you see Costner & JJ lottery picks next draft?

  8. SuperStuff 04/23/2007 at 3:09 PM #

Carolina will be a very solid team without Wright next year. I would be shocked if Danny Green didn’t get more playing time next year. Every time he comes into the game good things happen. Lawson leaving would have been a bigger blow to UNC in my opinion.

I was hoping that he would stay to be honest…..then there wouldnt be the “well, if we still had Wright” crap when we beat them πŸ˜‰

While I am thinking about it –

For those of you that live in the triangle area. I made it to the Raleigh Times Bar over the weekend. Behind the bar they have this awesome photo of Jimmy V and Sidney Lowe with Jimmy V’s arm around Sidney’s neck, etc when Sidney was a player. It looked like it may have been the ACC championship game in 83. They were holding a net.

If any of you get downtown the photo is really worth checking out. http://www.raleightimesbar.com

Raleigh Times has good food. Excellent reuben. Very good fries too.

Raleigh Times is great! I’m there almost every weekend it seems. Just noticed that picture in the past month or so. It’s a great shot, very candid.

Can’t always get what you want.

He was the ‘least’ important of the 3 considering leaving, but a major loss nonetheless.

  14. Mr O 04/23/2007 at 3:44 PM #

Least important? Give me a break. Hard to argue that the most talented was the least important of the three.

  15. Mr O 04/23/2007 at 3:45 PM #

Isn’t Raleigh times the place with a great beer selection as well?

  16. primacyone 04/23/2007 at 3:56 PM #

Great beer selection. The high balls were mixed very well on Saturday. I had three Gin and Tonic’s and that was all I wanted.

“Least important? Give me a break. Hard to argue that the most talented was the least important of the three.”

Did you watch UNC play this year? If so, its every EASY to argue that Tywon and Tyler are more important to our success than Brandan.

  18. primacyone 04/23/2007 at 4:05 PM #

^yea – Tyler and Tywon are the reason you beat USC and lost to Georgetown. Tywon is pretty dang important just because he is the only one – not unlike how Engin was important to us.

But Brandon was not the “least” important. It just seems that way because he was so gifted, scored seemingly effortlessly without a lot of flash, and is a geniunely humble guy who kept his emotions in check on and off the court. Tyler was just the opposite and therefore all of the extra stuff makes it seem like he could be more important, when in fact he can barily walk to class without falling down.

  19. highstick 04/23/2007 at 4:10 PM #

Uh, I think you meant “hop” to class!

  20. chris92heel 04/23/2007 at 4:11 PM #

“But Brandon was not the Ò€œleastÒ€ important. It just seems that way because he was so gifted, scored seemingly effortlessly without a lot of flash, and is a geniunely humble guy who kept his emotions in check on and off the court. ”

Brandan was the least important of the 3 and its not really even close. Thats not to say that he wasn’t important. He definitely was. I love brandan, but its easier to be the guy playing next to the man than to be the man. Thanks for the basketball lesson but he’s no Tyler.

Tywon goes without saying I assume.

  21. Mr O 04/23/2007 at 4:32 PM #

Next year Brandon wouldn’t have been the least important of the three. He was the least important last year because he was a freshman and took less shots than Hansbrough. That would have changed this year as he would have surpassed Hansbrough in terms of importance.

For UNC, all three were replaceable. They have experienced guys at each of these positions to step into their roles if anyone did leave early.

  22. vtpackfan 04/23/2007 at 4:33 PM #

“but its easier to be the guy playing next to the man than to be the man.”

It was a little more equal then your revisionist version. Most people saw a team that when the half court game wasn’t clicking lobbed a ball up somewhere about 12 1/2 feet in the air to a freakish condor of a man. It looked like shades of Alcinder playing Woodens high/low game. I thought it was very impressive and if you think there not going to miss that luxury then your kidding yourself.

Second of all, Wright was imposing on the defensive end. State was lucky to have Costner so we could atleast get him out from under the rim. Those are both pretty important, IMO.

  23. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 04/23/2007 at 4:42 PM #

As long as the ACC continues to let Tyler clear out with his elbows he will continue to be the most important.

  24. mafpack 04/23/2007 at 4:48 PM #

“As long as the ACC continues to let Tyler clear out with his elbows, hippied-hop, travel, set moving screens, stand 10 seconds in the paint, and climb up his oppontents backs for a rebound, he will continue to be the most important.”

There ya go, I fixed your quote for you πŸ™‚

Just found this over at TheStruttinWolf.com –

    http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=2&c=637669

New kick-off man to replace Dareney – that’s a “whew” for me – as to my knowledge we only have a punter signed on for next year right?
