Fox Sports – NC State Ranked 25th for 2007-08 Season

Here’s some nice press for Lowe and company:

25. NC State
Sidney Lowe’s team loses senior point guard Engin Atsur, but look for Iowa State transfer Farnold Degand to step in and provide help running the team. Degand will have plenty of weapons as the Wolfpack return their other four starters — Brandon Costner, Gavin Grant, Ben McCauley and Courtney Fells — and welcome a pair of talented frosh — J.J. Hickson and Tracy Smith.

    SWEET!!!!!!!!!!

I’m going to have to agree with that ranking. I see us as a bubble ranked team next year between 30-20. Obviously there is some skepticism about our point guard situation with Atsur leaving but I think our bench will be deep enough and our frontcourt will be good enough to overcome that. I see us as a 7-4 seed in the tournnament next year.

It’s going to be a trip watching Hickson, McCauley, Costner, Grant, Smith, Horner, and Thomas tear up the frontcourt next year. We can keep throwing mismatches at them with that many quality bigs.

We’ll go as far as the development of our guards takes us. Most importantly Degand and Javi at PG, but also Fells at SG – he could develop into a real force and take the heat off of our fierce frontcourt.

  4. Dan 04/05/2007 at 11:00 AM #

I posted this elsewhere, but its actually appropriate here.

Rivals has us at #19 for next season.

Plus, one of our ’08 recruits, Fayetteville’s CJ Williams, just made the Scout.com top 100.

  5. TNCSU 04/05/2007 at 11:07 AM #

Scout also just bumped up Ty Walker (Wake verbal) to 5 stars and the #3 Center in the class. That’s up from a 4-star with “no” ranking. I think we may be targeting Bacui who is up to the #9 Center in the class.

  6. one00_proof 04/05/2007 at 11:24 AM #

Ty deserved that bump though. The kid is a monster in term of defensive and shotblocking abilities, and his ceiling is extremely high. Props to Williams for cracking the 100 too, hopefully he can dominate on the AAU circuit and boost that ranking. Same for Mays.

I knew things were starting to look too good…

Compound this with the Lowe’s son nightmare & I think that now the local media has enough material to be really annoying.

  8. TNCSU 04/05/2007 at 11:28 AM #

He’s definitely tough on D and the boards. I watched the State Championship game. I think he had 6-7 blocks in the first half. He definitely needs to bulk up a bit, and maybe work on his offense, but a good pick-up for Wake.

I keep remembering the year Georgetown had a record of something like 18 – 14 with Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo in the lineup because of poor guard play.

How are Degand, Johnson & Gonzalez going to play? I don’t think we will know the answer until we get into ACC play. This is when the coaches really start game planning to a player’s weakness. The good news is that we have several options and they don’t have to be great.

I can see us anywhere from the NCAA bubble to a Top Ten team if it all comes together.

  10. TNCSU 04/05/2007 at 11:58 AM #

Truthfully, though, as we saw this year, we were not that bad even with Courtney or GG running the point. We did win some games. I think between Degand and Javi, we’ll be okay, but I do see times when either GG or Courtney may run the point if we want to go with a big line-up. Either way, I see us as a top 4 ACC team with a 3-5 seed in the NCAA tourney — provided off-the-court issues don’t keep popping up all over the place. 🙁

A top 25 finish would be great.

    GT at 13?

W.T.F. regarding Coach Harris. Jeeeezus. I’m just glad there’s no mention of alcohol … yet.

  12. skywalkerdt 04/05/2007 at 12:10 PM #

Noone could’ve seen the deal with Coach Harris coming, nevertheless, I think this is more damage than the previous issue as Coach Harris is extremely involved with recruiting and this will cast a shadow over him.

In other news ESPN.com is reporting that Donovan has told kentucky no and will get an extension at Florida

  13. PurplePeopleEaters 04/05/2007 at 12:35 PM #

Larry Harris charged with resisting arrest according to wral.

  14. TNCSU 04/05/2007 at 12:43 PM #

Skywalker, I agree. He is VERY involved, and is an Assistant Coach – this is just not very good….

  15. StateFans 04/05/2007 at 12:52 PM #

Just hold on and wait – this may seem different when the full story comes out. Coach Harris is still part of the NC State family, and we need to not jump to conclusions based on initial reports in the media.

  16. buttPACKer 04/05/2007 at 12:55 PM #

you’re right, it was just an initial reaction. . . cooler heads prevail!

  17. MrPlywood 04/05/2007 at 1:09 PM #

    *sigh*

Once again, wait until all the facts are in. Charged doea not mean guilty. Charged does not mean convicted. There are all sorts of factors that come into play with a resisting charge. But, I am not a lawyer, so perhaps someone out there that has more knowledge can chime in…

  18. Dan 04/05/2007 at 1:09 PM #

SFN is really doing a good job right now with the Harris situation.

I dont think anything can be added to the news reports until Coach Harris gets a chance to respond to the charges.

  19. Sam92 04/05/2007 at 1:14 PM #

it doesn’t look good — but the man deserves his day in court

it’s great that we’re getting good press about the team’s prospects for next year; credit to the team’s strong finish this year and sid’s great recruiting.

  20. Jeremy Hyatt 04/05/2007 at 1:28 PM #

what the hell, you have got to be kidding me…. please tell me this is a belated valentine’s gag. the media and the recruiting competition is just going to hang us. hopefully this just goes away.

  21. Jeremy Hyatt 04/05/2007 at 1:30 PM #

who wants in on the pool that Tracey Smith knifes his cousin in a McDonald’s parking lot while simultaneously being declared ineligible for his manufactured gpa?

  22. choppack1 04/05/2007 at 1:49 PM #

On PP, GaWolf has an interesting response about this…That’s all I’m going to say, but it’s certainly possible that Harris’ actions weren’t the worst here.

  23. PackGirl 04/05/2007 at 2:21 PM #

Just as I suspected. From the N&O:
“The assistant coach was going 41 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone in his 2006 Cadlillac Escalade, Sughrue said.”

He should know better than to drive around in car like that.

  24. Gene 04/05/2007 at 2:26 PM #

    http://www.newsobserver.com/141/story/561057.html

    N&O article, with more details.

King stopped Harris shortly after 10 p.m. in the 800 block of West Morgan Street near downtown. The assistant coach was going 41 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone in his 2006 Cadlillac Escalade, Sughrue said.

This is pretty close to NCSU’s campus and I know going 40 is pretty easy, unless you really pay attention and catch the speed limit sign, because other streets in the area have speed limits of 35 mph, so you’ll keep going 40 mph.

  25. packbackr04 04/05/2007 at 2:29 PM #

cHOP^^ it’s certainly possible that Harris’ actions weren’t the worst here.

… Care to elaborate as i dont go to pack pride.
