Chuck Amato Q&A

Q: Do you feel that you had an adversarial relationship with the media while at N.C. State as some have suggested?

A:I think it’s all bull, because 95 percent of the [media] people that sat in those meetings, there was one paper that had it out — not just for me — but our university, in any sport, any game or any guy sitting in that [head football coach] seat, or the basketball seat. It was ridiculous.

I had more fun in these meetings, because I tried to make it fun. I said, ‘You guys have a job to do, and I’ve got a job to do, and I’ll do everything I can do to help you to a point, and you guys do everything you can to help me, to a point.’ I understand you have a job to do. I had people come up to me and say, ‘Chuck, don’t change. We love it. We haven’t had somebody take a 15-minute thing, turn it into a hour thing, and we’re laughing our [butt] off on the way out of here.’ There’s only one group. … It was bull. I didn’t have a problem with the press, even them. …

I’ve been around long enough to know, the power of the pen, you can’t beat them because you don’t run out of ink. You’re going to write whatever you want to. … They wanted me to be really [mad]. You know what, ‘Just keep feeding it. You’re doing my marketing for me [writing about] red shoes, the glasses, he drives a Corvette.’ … They would say, ‘Boy, you’re flamboyant.’ Why am I flamboyant? ‘Well, you drive a Corvette.’ Mike Krzyzewski drives a Jaguar, but I’ve never read that in the paper.

The NC State program is better off for Chuck’s tenure in Raleigh. And for that I thank him. None of us will be able to sit in that gorgeous stadium we now have and not appreciate what Chuck did for our facilities. Chuck is and always will be family.

His time to go however, had come. I too have read the “on the verge of a NC talk”. Don’t know how that could be. I would hardly classify 15-20 since PR graduated as being “on the verge”. Even PR’s last season was a major disappointment.

But whatever. I have been a fan of Amato’s since the mid sixties when he was a player. I still am and will pull for him back at FSU.

Time to look forward to TOB. Can’t wait.

Brickman…I agree, it never should have been that close, but with an offensive style that won’t fool anybody (ummm..even App. State figured it out) and no back up system in place what would anyone expect. The West Coast offense is like a spread wishbone attack, all running plays, very few plays down the field. WE HAD THE RECIEVERS, WE JUST DID NOT USE THEM LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED!!!

TOB has these kids excited about WORKOUTS!! I can’t wait for my season tix to arrive, I’m ready to help get the Carter rocking again…GO WOLFPACK!!!

The pros and cons can be bantered back and forth forever, but the fact is that the overall NC State football program, facilities, and enthusiasm took a major turn for the better under Chuck Amato. Now Tom O’Brien and Sydney Lowe are about to make the fans, and this whole university SING on both the playing field and the hardwood.

The WOLFPACK is set to be the best it’s ever been. I can’t understand how it happened, but damn if ol’ Lee Fowler didn’t put it in all in place somehow.

wp 35 you hit nail on head . no other opp. line up front sucked. no matter how you put it he is no head coach.as for the improvements to cf . i for one like the new car look on outside but if motor does not run what good dose that do . rivers had just as much to do with that if not more .ctc is family and you do not mess with family.{waiting on sopranos}.but plain and simple he was not a head fball coach.

    ahahaha, I love this.

“…Beating Notre Dame that year we had that Gator Bowl team when we went 9-0 and lost three games in a row because [Nike] made me take my [Oakley] sunglasses off. Then I put them back on and we won our 10th…”

Thats funny, but I do appreciate all that CTC has done for us. Its a shame that he was not able to take us to the ultimate level (which we were/are in a great place to achieve), but he was able to put us on the national radar and help us turn our facilities world class. Thanks Chuck, good luck in everything you do, except when you’re facing the Red & White!

    Go Pack!

p.s. TOB has me uber-excited about this season.

On another note, I am VERY impressed with the job that Tony Haynes has done calling FB, Hoops, AND Baseball. Best play by play man since Gary Dornberg (moment of silence).

Chuck Amato did a lot for NC State University football. However, with a large ego often comes a great fall and this is what happened to Coach Amato.
I am glad that he was able to raise the standards for football but I am also glad to see new leadership at the helm of our football program
I wish Coach Amato a lot of luck in the future but not against NC State.

  9. WolfPup35 04/08/2007 at 2:47 PM #

Agreed, CTC put NCS football back on the map, whereas MOC had put the program into a downhill slide from where Sheridan had brought it. I expect the ‘Pack to shake up the league, and be in the ACC championship game withiin 2 or 3 years. Maybe not this yr., but hell, who knows.

Has anybody heard anything about the QB battle, or what kind of O-line we’ll have this year? Evans could have done much better if the line could have held up a few seconds longer last year!

  10. WolfPup35 04/08/2007 at 3:18 PM #

I look forward to seeing everyone at the spring game next weekend!
Let’s all show up and give our SFN united support to the team and show our new head coach what Wolfpack Nation is all about!

I genuinely felt back for CTC. He cared. You could tell he cared. The players played hard for him, but they also didn’t play smart most of the time. Do I think it was time to part ways? Yes. I still wish him all the best. The feelings I had when CTC was canned were a lot different then how I felt last April 1st.

Amato for AD I wouldn’t mind in the slightest. He couldn’t do a worse job then Fowlup, and when TOB retires in 7 years (hopefully), he’d have a good idea of who to bring in. I don’t think Sid’s going anywhere in the next 10-15 years.

  12. tractor57 04/08/2007 at 5:59 PM #

I was a bit torn when Chuck was fired. It was time certainly but to me there was no doubt that he wanted to program to thrive. I wish him well, we are much better for his time in Raleigh. One thing I’ll say about the linked interview – surprised? How? Why? Maybe he didn’t expect the admin to really pull the trigger looking back on the BB issue?
I think he will be better for the experience, FSU will be better for his efforts and we shall be better with TOB. Thanks Coach – and I mean that with the utmost respect.

    Astral Rain…I agree. Nice post.

  14. newt 04/08/2007 at 8:21 PM #

Second to the fans, I think Mary Ann Fox is the primary person responsible for bringing a big time football attitude to NC State, which led to our great new facilities. Chuck was the benefactor of those things, not the cause.

  15. Pack92 04/09/2007 at 7:50 AM #

Could not agree more astral rain2. I had posted before about Chuck as AD. Talk about some enthusiasm! The good thing is apparently there were no bridges burned when he left. The sad part is he did need to leave as Head Football Coach. If his teams had made half the progress on the field we made in fundraising and facilities we would be an annual top 15 team. I fear a re-uniting of CTC and Mickey Andrews will bring back a Fla. St. defense of old and Jimbo Fisher has already shown what he can do with an offense. Good luck to Chuck and TOB. Both programs they are currently at will benefit from their styles.

  16. Rick 04/09/2007 at 7:53 AM #

The most fun I have had at a football game was when we beat ND in Fla.

I wish it had worked out with Chuch but it did not. He did alot of good things for NCSU
I hope TOB takes us to the next level.

I will always love Coach Amato. I loved his attitude…his personality…the swagger the team had…the confidence we exuded….and the excitement and improvements he brought to NC State! As Coach O’Brien says…there is a HUGE difference in going to a game today than when I was going to watch Mike O’Cain’s team play. Whatever this program accomplishes in the future…Chuck Amato (with a handfull of others) was the one who made it possible. I sincerely hope that soon NC STate will do something to honor the former coach and celebrate all the great things that were accomplished during his time here!

Looks like Chuck’s got a new pair of shades! And they are hideous…

  19. Jimmy V 04/09/2007 at 9:49 AM #

Chuck Amato loved Wolfpack football and loved NC State. He was brash, cocky, entertaining, colorful, and had some passion. Unfortunately, he didn’t connect too well with some of the big money boosters at NC State. I think that was part of his downfall. It is interesting that Sendek got ten years and Amato got seven. Now some will say, “Sendek was in the middle of five straight NCAA bids. Two out of Amato’s last three years were losing seasons.” But the truth of the matter is their times at State were very similar: middle-of-the-road finishes most of the time, rare top 25 finishes, never seriously challenging for a big, big season. Sendek was 191-132 in ten years. That’s an average of 19-13 per season. Add in the creampuff opponents and lack of bigname teams on Herb’s schedules and you see that his overall record was somewhat mediocre. Amato was 49-37 in seven years. That’s an average of 7-5 per season. To me, 19-13 compares very similar to 7-5. Bottom line: Neither won an ACC title. Amato finished no. 12 one year in the final AP poll. Amato won eleven games in one season, but that is a little overrated because of number of games played and who NCSU played in that particular season. Sendek made it five straight NCAAs, finished second once in the regular season in ten years, and finished ACC Tournament runner-ups three times.

This stuff about Sendek accomplishing much more in his time than Amato . . . I don’t agree. Their times at NC State were similar in what they accomplished. Neither won the ACC and neither finished in the AP top ten at the end of a season. Amato was close to that in one year.

Philip Rivers covered Chuck’s inability to produce good, point producing offenses for four years. Chuck could/can coach defense. Funny how that is similar to Herb a little bit. His defense were pretty tough most of the time at State. But the offenses were downright bad from ’04-’06. And I don’t think Chuck knew how to fix the problem.

Amato did some good things and I like him. But I’ll also say, and this is a little bit negative, that Chuck needs to take a look in the mirror and admit that his teams had some problems, turnovers, penalties, and poor offenses, in the last three years. He needs to have some humility, which is not one of Chuck’s strong points.

All in all, I liked him, still do like him, and wish him well at Florida State. Sounds like he didn’t want to be out of the game. If he had had the backing of big boosters, he might would have gotten another year or two. Sounds like Chuck didn’t kiss their tails like ‘ol Herb Sendek did.

  20. Jimmy V 04/09/2007 at 9:58 AM #

Another thing I meant to say in that last post: Amato had two losing seasons in the last three years, but Sendek went five straight years without making the NCAAs so if you look at their total time at State, they both had some down, average, underachieving seasons. Amato just had his the last few years. Sendek had a few very, very average, mediocre seasons and then he had a bad one, but they get less pub because they were at the start. But they were still part of Sendek’s record in ten years.

Again, when you evaluate their total times at State, it’s clear: They had a FEW highlights, but most of the time, they finished in the middle of the ACC, never won the ACC, and never had a big season (Final Four, major bowl berth).

I don’t wish anything bad on Sendek at Arizona State, but I actually felt bad for Chuck when he was fired in November. I didn’t feel bad for Sendek; he had worn out his welcome and didn’t need to continue to be the coach at NC State. It was past time for him to leave. He should have been gone years before. State was Chuck’s dream job and I’m sure it hurt quite a bit when he got the news.

Going bowling is like going to the dance. If Chuck had gone bowling for the last 5 years he’d still be here.

  22. highonlowe 04/09/2007 at 11:58 AM #

If a frog had wings, we wouldn’t have lost 9 games including embarrassments to Akron, So Miss, UNC, and ECU.

  23. GoldenChain 04/09/2007 at 2:27 PM #

Interesting fact I just looked up:
    In 7 seasons MOC had wins over 9 ranked teams, 4 out of conference, a #2 being the highest: #2FSU ’98, #16 Texas ’99, #13 ‘Cuse ’97, #11 ‘Cuse ’98, #16 Miss St ’94, #16 UVa ’93, #22 Clemson ’94, #18 Duke ’94, #13 UVa ’94.
    In 7 seasons CtC had 7 wins over ranked teams, one out of conference, #9 being the highest: #10FSU ’01, #14 FSU ’02, #11 ND ’02, #24 GAT ’05, #9 FSU ’05, #20 BC ’06, #17FSU ’06.

  24. Jimmy V 04/09/2007 at 3:33 PM #

Cedar, Herb was “buddy, buddy” with Wendell Murphy and the Dails. Correct? Amato was not. True? That had a lot to do with Amato not getting an eighth year. I liked Chuck, but I can’t say that I was completely sold on him getting an eighth year. Why? Losses to not very good Carolina teams, especially the 23-9 “egg” in Chapel Hill last year. Carolina’s only going to get tougher now with Butch Davis. And I think Butch would have beaten Chuck like a red headed stepchild.

But I think Herb held on through some tough times because of a few big money alums. Chuck didn’t kiss tail to anybody so when he had a few subpar seasons, he didn’t get the blessing for “one more year” from a few big donors. So he was fired.

If you have people calling for your head and you have the power brokers on your side, sometimes you can hang on. When you don’t have the millionaires on your side and you’re flamboyant and colorful and you have a bad season or two, it all adds up to you getting fired. I could have gone for one more season of Chuck, but I’m also happy TOB is here. An ex-Marine who will instill discipline in the players and team. This will translate to wins. I expect 7-9 wins in most years in the TOB era, which would be fine with me. Just stay away from the seven game losing streaks to Carolina.

I believe he got fired because of performance, but had he had ‘ol Wendell on his side, he would have gotten another year. Just as in ’01, which Sendek should have been let go, but he wasn’t because of a few people, including prominent boosters, the chancellor, and a bumbling, stumbling AD.

    What say you?

  25. Primewolf 04/09/2007 at 9:16 PM #

That interview says it all about Chuck. What an ego. I appreciate what you did Chuck, but it was time to move on. Your press relations went far beyond one newspaper, you made national head lines with some of your quotes.

Best of luck to you coach. Get ready for some TOB brand of smashmouth.
