All Three Wolfpackers Drafted

Lions

Titans

Chiefs

Once Sunday’s session of the NFL draft got going, it didn’t take long for all three of NC State’s NFL prospects to have been taken off the board.

We talked about Tank Tyler‘s selection by the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday.

In the 4th round of the NFL draft AJ Davis was taken by the Detroit Lions and Leroy Harris will join Stephen Tulloch with the Tennessee Titans. (Speaking of Stephen Tulloch…you really need to click on this article to read some good press regarding a former Wolfpacker.

We’d like to thank choppack for sharing the following nugget from yesterday.

On media bias front – here in Winston, our local paper leading up to the draft had stories on the draft aspirations of Jesse Holly of UNC-Ch and Gaddis of WF, in their draft preview, they made a fleeting mention of Tank and how he his draft status was being hurt due to possible character issues. At least today you found out that he was the only Big 4 player selected yesterday. The same story mentions local players who hope to be drafted and leaves out Leroy Harris and AJ Davis.

Tank went about where he should have gone. He flashed some talent, but was too inconsistent to be taken earlier.

The NFL.com site is saying that AJ Davis ran a 4.29 in his on-campus workout. I was told that Davis ran a 4.55 on campus, so apparently, he ran twice.

BTW, I’m loving the Panthers draft.

Noah: What are the Panthers going to do at safety?

Good to see AJ get a shot. Hope these guys can all make teams and get a decent contract.

I think that if B. Merriweather or R. Nelson would have been there in the first, they would have taken him. Had the safety that the CHargers taken been there in the second, they would have taken him.

Right now, Josh Gattis is still on the board.

Minter will be the starting FS and probably Nate Salley at SS. They could also move Thomas Davis over to SS if they had to. Beason gives them some flexibility at linebacker.

Ryan Kalil was absolutely my favorite player in this draft and I had been hoping against hope that the Panthers would take him in the second. Everyone kept telling me that a) he wouldn’t be there in the second when the Panthers came up, and b) he wasn’t a need, so they wouldn’t take him if he was.

I was thrilled when I saw his name flash across. Now, the Panthers can either move J. Hartwig to guard or trade him or just cut him and get some cap space.

Scratch Josh Gattis. He goes to jax.

Personally, I like the Panthers draft alot also, but I would like to see the Panthers draft a few NC players (or even SE U.S.) players a little more often. Besides Peppers (a no-brainer) I don’t think they’ve drafted very many.

Got a guy from Penn St who played linebacker mostly, but also fullback and DE. Wonder if he can provide both depth at linebacker and DE which is another area of need. Did they make this pick thinking T. Davis is going to play SS?

  7. noah 04/29/2007 at 2:14 PM #

Tim Shaw. He’s going to be a good backup and a great special teams player. He’s not a DE. They solved that problem with Charles Johnson yesterday.

I think they are expecting to either sign a veteran FA or go with Minter and Salley at the safety spots.

Safety isn’t exactly the hardest position on the field to fill. If I was going to enter the season thin at a position, safety is a lot better than DE or LB.

I think Panthers had a quality draft – Kalil and Charles Johnson were both highly regarded…The LB drafted was a bit of surprise.

From an NC State perspective, we remain on somewhat of a roll. Since Amato arrived we’ve seen the following players drafted or make an NFL team:
    1. Koren Robinson
    2. Jarvis Borrum (thanks Noah)
    3. Adrian Wilson
    4. Terrance Holt
    5. Brian Williams
    6. Scott Koostra
    7. Sean Berton
    8. Philip Rivers
    9. Jerricho Cotcherty
    10. Devonte Edwards
    11. Lamont Reid
    12. Sean Locklear
    13. Pat Thomas
    14. Andre Maddox
    15. Mario Williams
    16. Chris Colmer
    17. Manny Lawson
    18. John McCargo
    19. TJ Williams
    20. Marcus Hudson
    21. Stephen Tulloch
    22. Oliver Hoyte
    23. Tank Tyler
    24. AJ Davis
    25. Leroy Harris

This, of course, doesn’t count the All-ACC calibre players who didn’t make it the league for whatever reason – Ray Robinson, Levar Fisher, Willie Wright, Shane Riggs, and Dantonion Burnette. Nor does it count likely pros from our current roster – Toney Baker, Andre Brown, Demario Pressley and Curtis Crouch.

CJ Wilson is your safety. I think some have him listed as a CB, but I don’t know if he has the speed to play CB in NFL.

I am glad they picked up a couple solid LBs since that was really one of the glaring needs.

The Panthers draft is not a lot of frills with a bunch of big names, but appears to be pretty solid and filled the holes on the team.

choppack1, didn’t Brian Clark make it onto the Broncos roster for a few games late in the season?

  12. SuperStuff 04/29/2007 at 6:29 PM #

Congratulations to the Tank, AJ, and Leroy on getting drafted. Work hard guys and make your dreams come true.

Hey chop, not to burst your bubble but tory holt graduated in 99, a year before amato…

  14. wolfpack2002 04/29/2007 at 8:34 PM #

Hey Chop, Levar Fisher did play in the pros for 3 years, he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and played for the New Orleans Saints after that. Then he had a double knee surgery two years ago, I’m not sure what he did after that

  15. wolfpack2002 04/29/2007 at 8:38 PM #

(revision..sort of) Fisher had a 50 tackle season in ’03 but was released by the saints in sept 2005 b/c of his knees if i’m not mistaken.

  16. wolfpack2002 04/29/2007 at 8:41 PM #

Dantonio Burnette signed free agent with the steelers in april 2005 but didn’t make it past the august preseason cuts

  17. WolfPup35 04/30/2007 at 7:09 AM #

Coppertop, you’re getting your Holt’s confused. Torry graduated before Amato and was a WR, Terrance Holt played for Amato, was a fantastic FG and PAT blocker, and was a SAFETY! Easy mistake to make.

  18. WolfPup35 04/30/2007 at 7:11 AM #

On another note, I have always wished that Adrian Wilson would have gone to a better team. I used to love watching him hit people so hard that HIS helmet would come off.

  19. noah 04/30/2007 at 8:39 AM #

Adrian Wilson is making a ton of cash and is having a fantastic career.

    L. Fisher absolutely shredded his knee and that did end his career. He would have been a nice player otherwise.

I think the Panthers will end up resigning Colin Branch or Shaun Williams and then address both safety spots next year. Minter is retiring, so they’ll need to make a move.

The Jags and the Bucs both made wholesale moves with their safeties.

  20. MatSci94 04/30/2007 at 3:20 PM #

I also love that NCCU and ECU had more players drafted than UNC.

  21. wolfpack2002 04/30/2007 at 3:38 PM #

thx for clarifying noah, i wasn’t sure.

  22. noah 04/30/2007 at 3:47 PM #

The kid from Central was Greg Peterson who we tried to recruit. He just didn’t have the grades.

I used to love the Chiefs under Hank Stram with players like Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Lenn Dawson, Ed Podalak, Jan Stenerud, and Shelby NC’s own Bobby Bell. Steve Sabol, of NFL Films fame, decided to put a microphone on Coach Stram as an experiment, just to see if it would be anything worth hearing, as well as watching. If you haven’t ever seen and heard that tape, it was some great stuff.
