’07 ACC / Big 10 Match-Ups Set

NC State will battle ‘sister’ STATE school, Michigan State in this year’s ACC/Big 10 Challenge. The Atlantic Coast Conference has dominated the ACC/Big 10 Challenge – sweeping all of the eight previous events.

The Wolfpack will travel to East Lansing on Wednesday, November 28th for a 7:00 pm game that will be televised on the big-boy network, ESPN. The entire Challenge line-up can be found by clicking here.

NC State and Michigan State are two of only seven programs in NCAA Basketball history which have managed to win (at least) two national championships coached by different coaches. (Link) The two programs last battled in the 2002 NCAA Tournament where (#7 seed) NC State defeated the (10th seeded) Spartans in a first round battle in Chicago.

Additionally, both of the programs were recently projected as potential #2 seeds in the 2008 NCAA Tournament by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

The Wolfpack will face the Spartans directly after another difficult non-conference test in the Old Spice Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. The Old Spice Classic will be held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando and will provide all participants the opportunity to play three games. The field has representatives from eight different conferences and is comprised of NC State, Central Florida, George Mason, Kansas State, Penn State, Rider, South Carolina and Villanova. All of the Classic’s games will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU. After beginning on Nov. 22, contests are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 25. Arkansas defeated West Virginia to win the inaugural 2006 event.

Nice! Glad we don’t play Purdue or Michigan.

Both tourneys look like good opportunities to enhance our NCAAT resume.

Cool – a new opponent. Interest OOC schedule is emerging. Both sports will have some pretty decent OOC games this year.

Nice to be playing Michigan State. Really want to see a NCSU-Indiana matchup. But Michigan State is a tough game on the road. Izzo is a very good coach, one of the best in the country. I would like to see an ACC-SEC Challenge in the future. We’ve played the Big East and the Big Ten. Let’s see ACC vs. SEC next.

A couple of good things about this: first, a strong test for a team that will have a lot of new faces in key roles on it. Win or lose, this experience in a hostile environment will go far to prepare them for a tough conference slate. Secondly, it is valuable national exposure for the team and for the university. That can only help recruiting, especially if the Wolfpack plays an exciting and interesting kind of basketball — it will put the Pack in the mind of players that may one day don the red and white in their own right.

I’m glad to see that NC State is finally taking steps to getting itself back into the national picture.

I don’t know if this was mentioned, but MSU is the only Big Ten team with a winning record in this event.

this will be good for our kids, hope we can win the tourny in orlando, and beat mich st. IF we do that we will be sitting good.

Does Michigan State lose the PG who can shoot? IF I recall correctly, this year they had only 2 decent scoring options.

As I’m looking at the half foot of snow continue to rise in my backyard, Old Spice Classic is looking like a nice road trip. Or air trip rather.

Since the Big “10” has eleven teams, and the ACC has 12, there were 11 games last year – I can’t remember who didn’t play this past year – may have been GT or Wake. Looks like it may be the last place team from the previous year, so that would have been Wake this year, and looks to be Miami next year. Also, Drew Neitzel will be a senior next year.

  11. branjawn 04/16/2007 at 4:54 PM #

Wake played this past year b/c the same team can’t miss 2 consecutive years. I remember that much. So, yeah, 11 makes sense.

  12. Dr. BadgerPack 04/16/2007 at 5:04 PM #

Neitzel is seriously annoying. Usually his game involves rubbing his guy off on a screen, but every 4-5 games he gets into a groove where he will put up absolutely anything and it’ll go in. He Redick’d OSU in a loss and Wisconsin in a win last season, among his other notable games.

Ga Tech played Penn State last season and Wake sat out. If I remember right, Wake went out to get whipped on by Air Force during the ACC/Big 10 challenge.

I think if you put a big guy — like Courtney — on Neitzel, he can shut him down. Any word on whether we’ll go back to the “STATE” uniforms? Let’s show Michigan State who the REAL State is…If there’s a need for the NC, you can make the S be the NCS logo (the one at halfcourt) and that would do it. I’ll contact the AD to put in my recommendation…

What a GREAT matchup – a school that’s very similar to NC State culturally, and a great program to boot. Getting one of the FOUR “big boy ESPN” slots speaks volumes. The Pack is back, my friends.

IIRC, we’ve been on the duece every other time.

MSU gets everybody back. They will be a serious early test. I’m loving the thought of possibly playing Nova, USC, K-state and Mich St in a weeks time. Through in Cincy and a couple of other BCS opponents and we have a good SOS.

  16. KChill 04/16/2007 at 8:43 PM #

Using the block S as the S in STATE is a good idea dude….

  17. skywalkerdt 04/17/2007 at 8:48 AM #

a thought for your uni suggestion- keep the block “S” in the same spot as I remember this past year, right at the top of the chest and maybe use it on the shorts but then just “STATE” as the text. MSU has run with jerseys that just said “STATE” recently and really rubbed me the wrong way in doing so.

First regular season game vs MSU since 1983…. and our point guard was Sidn ey Lowe

(We did play them in the 2002 NCAAs)

  19. TNCSU 04/17/2007 at 10:58 AM #

Thanks KChill — either way, I hope we can get just STATE back on the front on the jerseys — I’d also like seeing “Pack” on the shorts like we used to have.

“First regular season game vs MSU since 1983…. and our point guard was Sidney Lowe”

Harold Thompson stole an inbounds pass late in that game to seal the win. You know how old Kevin Willis is? He was the starting center for Mich. State in that game. He’s STILL playing in the NBA, I think. Julio Franco was a rookie in the MLB that year and of course, he’s still playing too.

Scott Skiles and Jay Vincent were also in the Mich. State lineup.

  21. noah 04/17/2007 at 12:51 PM #

Check that…it was Jay’s brother Sam Vincent who was the PG for the Spartans, not Jay.

  22. TNCSU 04/17/2007 at 4:03 PM #

Noah, you’re like a sports encyclopedia! Thanks for the info! I can’t believe Willis is still in the NBA. I’ll never forget that around the back (and front) pass that Scott Skiles threw a couple of years later in the NCAA tourney.
