ESPN: What we learned in Tampa

I’m going to tease with Bomani Jones’ second lesson first before delving into the real meat of this piece. Here is that second lesson:

The nation should be glad NC State didn’t make the NCAAs.”

Jones praises NC State and Sidney Lowe highly here:

My goodness, that team looked good. This wasn’t a charming Cinderella that got all the right breaks. This was a dangerous team.

The last thing anyone wants to face in the NCAA Tournament is a squad that has good athletes, two strong big men, a few capable ball handlers and a strong half-court game. After watching this team for four days, I couldn’t help but wonder how things would have been different if Engin Atsur, the player Gavin Grant referred to as their “general,” hadn’t missed 12 games with a bad hammy.

Also, consider what Grant said their approach was before the Duke game: “Don’t let anybody punk you.” A team with someone bold enough to say that from the dais of a postgame media session is a team to be reckoned with.

That’s great press, and Jones “got” it. Lowe’s team isn’t going to back down from a challenge. Lowe’s philosophy seems to be that shared by Patton and Frederick the Great: L’audace, l’audace, toujours l’audace! (Audacity, audacity, always audacity!) The red blazer is audacious. The up-tempo style is audacious. The declaration that the only goal for a 10th-seeded team is the championship or bust is audacious.

I’d like to take an aside and quote my favorite writer on Lowe’s audacity back when he was very sick with the flu and still donning the red blazer for a trip to Chapel Hill, because I think he was right in pointing out the foundation being laid for that leave-nothing-on-the-floor, 4-day effort that we saw this weekend and that Jones is praising now:

I want to underscore SFN’s point about Sid wearing the red jacket again. That’s just ballsy. It was ballsy enough at home. … Here Coach Lowe goes into Chapel Hill, with the frigging FLU, dons the red jacket again, and really gives everything he had. I doubt any of his guys will question him if he wants them to leave it all on the court. … [Further down] Mark my words, this will be a turning point on the season. Which way it turns I can’t say, but I’m optimistic.

Jimmy V’s “Dream” was audacious, too. But remember, a wise man once said, “Nothing can happen if not first a dream.”

Now back to Jones. His No. 1 will be a “shocker” to the Fowlers, Doyels, and the cultists:

1. Coaching is really important

NC State’s surprising run to the tournament championship game can be credited to many factors, but none more important than Sidney Lowe. …

This was all about the brilliant offense he runs, a motion scheme that still allows his players to use their individual talents to make plays. No team shoots 73 percent from the field (like the Pack did in the second half against Virginia) on luck and talent alone. The Wolfpack’s players were in great places at great times, and the reason for that was Lowe and his seemingly infinite reservoir of plays.

Let’s hit the highlights one more time: Coaching is really important — and — No team shoots 73 percent from the field on luck and talent alone. That means, by the way, that no team shoots 30 percent from the field on bad luck and lack of talent alone.

Wolfpack Nation is not so far removed from a time when we were told that the coach wasn’t to blame for players continually and reliably missing shots, game in and out (see Excuse No. 2). But I would like to point out that this year’s team shot 49.4 percent from the field, which was the highest shooting percentage since 1988-89.

That’s no accident. That’s coaching.

The very HUGE difference between Chuck’s shoes and Sidney’s jacket is that Chuck’s shoes were all about putting the attention on Chuck. Sidney’s jacket, on the other hand, is all about putting the attention back on NC State and our heritage.

    Charge against Mayo dismissed.

I do think a tougher schedule brings better recruits as well- unless you have 6am practice like Temple.

Also- Alabama/W-VA/Cincy/Michigan is a respectable OOC.

I’ll do a Drudge treatment for that one, too:

The difference in Gonzalez and Ferguson is probably athleticism. Ferguson looks like the slowest person on the court when he’s out there. That makes it difficult for him to get free for a jumper and means he’s spending all of his energy just trying to keep up on defense.

Also, a point guard who doesn’t score isn’t necessarily a liability. A shooting guard who can’t score is a dead spot in your offense.

As far as scholarships are concerned, I’ve heard rumors about Lewandowski transferring, but they are just scattershot rumblings at this point. No different than the thousands of “Cornelius Williams is transferring” rumors that I heard every single day the kid was at NC State.

I’m going to be shocked if Tracy Smith is here next year…so I agree…future recruits need to be interior players.

    RegularExpression

Great post. Many others have fallen prey to it also, but I couldn’t agree more on your point about the frame of reference.

The “heart” from PapaJohn’s earlier post was what I missed in the previous years and that’s what I thought, above all else, we needed most to turn this thing back around. Lowe has shown plenty of that and much more in the way coaching skills. I’ll still caution about expecting too much too soon, but we’re back on the right track.

“I would like to know if people feel totally comfortable by continually comparing Lowe’s first year to that of Herb Sendek’s,”

Fred I agree. I tend to think the comparisons to any prior coach are apples and oranges. It makes for nice banter but there can’t be a true or fair comparison. Speculation is like that. I’d say lets let a sleeping dog lie and look ahead. Just my 2 cents.

On the jacket. I’ve seen tons of alumni over the past 40 years wearing red jackets to WP games/gatherings with no one making any mention of it. On the contrary over the past 40 years, I’ve never seen any alumni wearing patent leather red tennis shoes (except for CTC) and bling sunglasses.

One is a tradition — the other is a stunt.

I’ve seen some clips and he looks solid (but so did Fergie).

Ferguson did well, in the few minutes he played in the ACC Tourney. I was impressed that our offense didn’t fall apart without Atsur, this past weekend.

Hope Ferguson gets his confidence up and can contribute next year, he maybe no more than a role player, but every team needs those guys.

Also- Alabama/W-VA/Cincy/Michigan is a respectable OOC.

Those are good teams to play, but having a tough OOC means little, unless you can win those games. Losing doesn’t help getting into the NCAA’s, even if it is to top notch competition.

One or two “good” losses can be forgiven, if you have good wins to balance it out, especially late in the year.

What really impacts SOS is how well the mid-majors are doing, when you play them. Herb’s best OOC SOS came when we played a bunch of mid-majors, who all won their conferences regular season title and/or tourney championship and got bids to the NCAA’s.

You need to line up some games against UW-Milwaukee’s, VCU’s and other teams, which usually are in the top half of their mid-major conferences, to end up with a good OOC SOS, as well as playing teams like UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.

You must not have looked down at the feet of our basketball players when Hodge was here.

The shoes Amato wore were exactly the same models that the basketball players wore.

As far as the sunglasses, you can find plenty of people wearing oakleys on any sunny day pretty much anywhere from east to west and north to south in the U.S. It’s not like he was wearing Dolce and Gabanna shades.

If we’re going to criticize Amato’s tastes…I’d probably point to his Goodfellas bracelet and his choice of three-button suits — WITH shoulder pads. Coach? You’re sort of…square…to begin with. Elongate. Pin stripes, two-buttons…longer lapels…

  9. redfred2 03/13/2007 at 1:15 PM #

Trevor “needs to get his confidence back” Ferguson might just go off for 35 points while reliving his HS glory days in a small environment like Drexel.

  10. packbackr04 03/13/2007 at 1:18 PM #

noah, have you heard something concerning Tracy Smith that makes you say that or just firing from the hip??? i am just wandering as i would love to see him play for us,…. but i dont the term “student athlete” fits him that well

  11. packbackr04 03/13/2007 at 1:22 PM #

would love to see Lew transfer… not knocking the kid. i just think Sid can get better player than Lew…. And Lew should get some PT somewhere, he just aint gonna get it here

  12. BoKnowsNCS71 03/13/2007 at 1:23 PM #

    Well said Noah.

If only he could have made more recruits an offer they could not refuse. Maybe when they do the CTC movie — Joe Pesci will still be around. “Do I amuse you with my shoes?” “Am I here to make you laugh?”

OOOOO CTC — ya had me going there.

Smith done well on his SAT if I remember correctly. Also, I heard about a special on HBO that was talking about diploma mill schools and with the new ncca rules…a 3.5 GPA and a 700 on your SAT gets you in? He done way better than that and I am sure he is got a GREAT gpa at Mt. Zion. Coach Lowe would not have taken him on if he knew he was not going to be allowed to play. I think everyone has heard rumors going around on PP and here that he has had some troubles with grades. People also refer to message board as “sources”. I am not worried about Tracy. I watch him play, he is solid and will be asset next year. If I was betting…my money is going on him playing for the pack next year. Other people was recruiting him as well…. Not to sound negative but really…how many of the kids do you really earn the GPA they list? And the SAT score they list? I am sure Tracy earned everything he has got…especially a surprisly nice vertical inside! He can get up good for off two feet for a nearly 6’8 guy 🙂

    Good news about Costner.
Interesting that two teams have two players on the first team. Maybe recruiting tandems becomes the norm.
Again, what is the love with Wright? What has he done to be first team?

    “Never heard that before”- VaWolf

I tease VaWolf, and he dishes it right back, but there is no one with whom I’d rather spend a day in the airport people watching.

    …..

UVa’s non-con SOS rating is really troubling. In fact, its downright misleading. It does not give UVa the proper credit. Look at these opponents:

    Arizona
    Purdue
    App State
    Gonzaga
    Stanford

Compare Va Tech’s non-con SOS which is ranked at 76

    Iowa
    George Washington
    Southern Illinois
    Old Dominion
    App State

Va Tech had 5 games against 200+. UVa had 4 against 200+. UVa really got drilled for the three games against 300+. But is a game against 220 much better than a game against 300? Teams should take note that perennial 300 teams like ECU will KILL you. Do not schedule them if you can avoid it. (yes, I’m drinking the SFN kool-aid on that one and am just trying to drive in the point of how playing the Pirates hurts the Wolfpack)

Given UVa’s quality non-con schedule I think they did a decent job of prepping their team for a run. You take out the 200+ plus gimmie games and UVa and Va Tech’s schedule are pretty similiar. In fact, I’d say that UVa played a higher quality opponent in those four games (App State excluded) against top 100 teams.

Note for comparison: NC State played 4 top 100 teams and 7 200+ plus teams. 7.

  17. redfred2 03/13/2007 at 1:52 PM #

Thanks branjawn, I hadn’t looked at that. There are some very interesting connections there. Possibly even a player with a little chip on his shoulder.

    Slightly off topic …

Not sure if anyone saw this, but a great article from SI on how the NCAA Selection committee uses (or doesn’t use) the RPI.

Wow, why in the world would Costner be third team behind Chase Budinger and Brook Lopez at forward? I can see Durant, obviously, and Wright is an unsurprising choice over him, though I think Costner was more valuable. But I don’t get that he didn’t make second team.

  20. wolfonthehill 03/13/2007 at 1:59 PM #

The dramatic improvement in shooting percentage has nothing to do with coaching. It’s all about Horner and Nieman. 😉

  21. Dan 03/13/2007 at 2:03 PM #

All fairness to Costner, he still has some work to do in regards to quickness and explosiveness. Rivals and Scout tend to slant their rating toward NBA potential.

Next year is going to be critical for Brandon. With JJ coming, Brandon will get some time at the three. That’s great on offense. Is that good on defense though? Can Brandon guard an opposing three? I dont think he’s shown that ability yet. I think that is the same thing that would hold him back in the draft this year. The ability to guard an NBA player that plays his opposite. Its not that I doubt Brandon will do those things in the future. He just hasnt done it yet. I’m excited about having him as a scorer next year, but the thought about him guarding an opposing three is pretty scary. Can you say zone defense?

“One is a tradition — the other is a stunt.”

Chuck gets too much flack for the shoes…The man bled wolfpack red. Heck, if he was our b’ball coach he would have probably worn red boots or shoes.

I don’t know whether or not Sidney did it for publicity or if Chuck did it for publicity. I know in both cases it got them publicity. Where Chuck ran into trouble is when he stopped winning.

You act different and you win you’re eccentric, you act different and you lose, you’re crazy.

  23. ShootingGuard 03/13/2007 at 2:07 PM #

“The very HUGE difference between Chuck’s shoes and Sidney’s jacket is that Chuck’s shoes were all about putting the attention on Chuck. Sidney’s jacket, on the other hand, is all about putting the attention back on NC State and our heritage.”

    Great point GA…

Sid said as much when the interviewers were asking him about wearing it game-after-game this weekend. Sid said,”The fans love it…so, if I gotta scramble to get it drycleaned, I gotta do what I gotta do…”

With a little luck, I think Sid will do very well here. Regardless, Sid “gets it” and is willing to lay it all on the line for us. Kind of like Dennis Horner coming here when the world seemed to be against us. Regardless of what happens in the end, I will always be a fan of Sid’s and Horner’s…

  24. Dan 03/13/2007 at 2:15 PM #

I made an error in the UVa=VT non-con comparison post. UVa and Va Tech both played 5 games against 200+ teams. My bad.

  25. Rochester 03/13/2007 at 2:18 PM #

Speaking of Horner, the kid showed me a few moves I didn’t realize he had on Sunday. He passed up a couple of 3’s to move closer to the basket. Very smart and well executed. It’s easy to overlook him at times with some of the guys we have coming aboard next year, but if he continues to develop at this pace he’s going to be a valuable guy to have around.
