TOB Building Bridges

Yesterday, Bobby V bridged the past…today, Tom O’ Brien is building bridges to mend some deterioriated relationships between NC State football and local high school football coaches.

Tom O’Brien’s priority this spring is preparing N.C. State for the 2007 season during off-season workouts. But cultivating relationships with the people who’ll be supplying talent to his program is also a major focus for the Wolfpack’s first-year head coach.

O’Brien spent Tuesday evening working on the latter in Fayetteville as the guest speaker at the monthly meeting for the region’s high school football coaches.

“It’s important to get to know these guys,’’ O’Brien said. “We know how strong the high school football in this area is.’’

A crowd of about 35 assistant and head prep coaches gathered at the Haymont Grill and Steak House to learn more about the 58-year-old former Marine who left a highly successful Boston College program in December to take over at N.C. State. He replaced Chuck Amato, whose team was criticized for being undisciplined and for suffering through losing records in two of the last three seasons.

O’Brien has had no issues with discipline or anything else since the Wolfpack hit the field for spring practice on March 14.

“They’re working hard and they want to be good,’’ O’Brien said. “We’ve thrown a lot at them and there’s a lot for them to learn. Right now we’re probably where we should be when you have a coaching change and implementing a new system. I don’t want to comment on anything in the past. But I haven’t seen any real discipline issues since we’ve been here and on the field. I’m happy with these kids. They’re attentive. They’re listening. They want to do the right things and they’re working hard to do the right things.’’

Alright! I needed a little football to keep me on track. I’m still having withdrawals since BBall season is over.

Glad to hear TOB is learning the lay of the NC Land.

    IT’S DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL!
15 more days until the Spring game, can’t freaking wait!
The O’Brien era is looking so freakishly similar to the Sheridan era that I can’t sleep. I’m doing up downs when I watch that “other” sport that seems to be dominating the airwaves this month, I came up with a gasser to run at the office, I really did get upset when those kids weren’t catching Peyton’s passes or picking up the blitz on SNL last week. I’m starting to mentally prepare myself for the player and team ratings we get when EA Sports NCAA Football 08 comes out in July.
I really hope O’Brien can beat UVA.

There should be a scrimmage today…right?

QB play looked good statistically in the 1st scrimmage. High completion percentages(unlike M. Stone) and a lot of TD passes. One would think we should get decent QB play this year with Evans’ experience as last years starter and two other fairly highly rated recruits.

Sure wish I could go over to CF today and watch the scrimmage.

I’m excited about Stone playing TE. He might not be a QB, at least a good one at the D-1 level, but he’s a football player. Get him on the field as much as possible.
And the cinematic masterpiece “Billy Madison” got it wrong: O’Brien, not O’Doyle, RULES!

Hi all, just got back in town from Chicago, trying to catch up on all things SFN. So, I am disappointed that no thread was made about Cullen Jones, Wolfpack swimmer turned pro, winning the Gold Medal this week at the World Championships in Australia in the Mens 4×200 Freestyle. The team put up the 2nd fastest time in history, second only to the WR they set last year.

Jones also will be competing in the Men’s 50m individual freestyle. This from the LA Times: “Men’s 50 freestyle: Splash and dash. This could be the world’s true introduction to American Cullen Jones, in a race that will be held Saturday in Australia, late this evening in the United States. Though he won two golds last summer at the Pan Pacs, this is his first world championships.”

How about some love for a Wolfpacker being the best in the WORLD at something??

    bran,
If you want to write something about it we can see about getting it on the frint page.

  7. branjawn 03/30/2007 at 8:46 AM #

Thanks Rick, as I said, I’m just back in town, been gone for a week. I have a lot to do this morning. How about I’ll wait and see how he does in the M50 Free and then write something up. He’s expected to win a medal, prob about 50/50 chance of getting gold. Wow, when’s the last time someone from State won gold? Coach Yow in the Olympics? Also of importance to the rest of the world, Jones is only the second black swimmer to win a medal. He’s the future of US swimming, and in interviews I have read loves Wolfpack Nation and thinks the world of NCSU and the time he spent there.

So when I write something later, do I post on this thread or email to someone???

It is really nice to have Tom O’Brien as our football coach. Like most of us said when he was hired….this guy is a winner….and that means he knows and understands that there are multiple levels that must be cultivated in order to win consistently. It’s kinda like farming….if you only cultivate one field or two you may be in great shape for a year, maybe two or three…but eventually the soil will dry up and then what? With no back up plan you will starve! It seemed Amato was excellent at a few “surface areas” of coaching, but really never cultivated much beyond that.

One more thing….this isnt about Amato I know…but I know someone who was there and they commented to me about how glowingly TOB spoke about the current players in the program. He spoke about their work effort and character. I know some, if not most, of this is to impress a new, hard-nosed coach….but it seems Amato left the new coach with some pretty good kids. So…kudos to him.

See ya at the Spring Game!

Crop rotation…the key to a championship football team.

Amato always impressed me keeping his players out of trouble off the field.

I think it was like evans had 3 tds and the other two had 2 each I think plus dre and baker scored 2-3 tds each..
    Was there any defense?

branjawn, could not agree more about Cullen Jones. As someone who has taken up swimming for triathlon in the last 3 years I can tell you that kid is amazing. Cullen is truly a rising star in the world of swimming.

We do have Chuck to thank for lots of things. Carter-Finley is NOTHING like the stadium I went to in the early to mid-90’s. Our players are at a different level as well – 3 draft picks in the top 30 from NC State? We used to be lucky if that many got drafted at all. TOB does have some good things to work with and I truly believe that is what brought the man here. He saw what was going on and thought”Hey, it’s not working out for Chuck but I think I can make it work”. I can’t wait for football to start!

  12. Pack92 03/30/2007 at 9:38 AM #

Whoops! Football SEASON to start. I’m just too excited!

I didn’t see anything in the article…nor anywhere else, for that matter…suggesting that NC State’s relationship with the state’s HS programs had “deteriorated” as was said in the lead paragraph of this blog entry. I knew that BTB had caused a lot of relationships with UNC-CH’s program to deteriorate, but I don’t think that was ever the case at NC State. The inference that these relationships needed mending is an unfair criticism of Chuck Amato.

  14. Mike 03/30/2007 at 10:08 AM #

Not wanting to criticize Amato, but the relationships were damaged with HS coaches in NC. We got very few of the kids in NC, and we made Fla a priority. The HS coaches send kids to the guys who are there beating the bushes. I had heard stories about HS coaches sending kids elsewhere, and I have some good HS contacts.

  15. packfanstk 03/30/2007 at 10:45 AM #

We had more NC kids than Florida kids, and we had a higher percentage of homegrown kids than UNC-CH had. The NC schools have always had trouble landing the true blue-chippers because of the proximity of football schools like Clemson, Tennessee, VaTech, and Georgia. To be sure we got many more Florida players with Chuck than we ever got before, or are likely to do again, but he didn’t recruit Florida at the expense of the NC high schools.

  16. noah 03/30/2007 at 10:57 AM #

It wasn’t just the Fla.-vs. NC thing.

The previous attitude could be very dismissive of people who tried to help them. This is coming on the heels of O’Cain and Sheridan, both of whom were extraordinarily gracious.

You don’t have to kiss anyone’s ass. But there’s a way to treat people.

  17. scpackman 03/30/2007 at 2:13 PM #

It’s funny because I always got the impression from posters that Dave Glenn overreacted to our Fl recruits…hmmmm….

Not sure what to believe….I just know I’ll believe in Toby when I see the results on the field. If he ever gets us to 11 wins I’ll be surprised.

Best case I believe will be the reincarnation of Sheridan, worst case would be the reincarnation of Cocaine. I believe CTC gave us the most talent this place will ever see…too bad Stone didn’t have a brain, and Davis didn’t have an arm…those were our years to cement top 15 ball and they were blown due to ineffective QB play. Mazzone was not the problem he was made out to be either IMO.

This years schedule looks tough. And we better win against Wake, UNX, and EZU since that’s why we fired CTC…goldarnitt

I would have loved for Amato to become a successful HC in Raleigh and I think he deserves to be fondly remembered for all that he accomplished for NCSU. I just don’t agree that Amato’s departure was all because of one position on the football field. There was too much inconsistency all over.

Amato got a chance to move up from an assistant coaching position to be the HC at his alma mater. He did a fabulous job in areas, and not so well in others. He was also welcomed right back to the program that he left to come here. All in all, I’d say that NCSU greatly benefitted from Amato’s tenure, but that NCSU also gave Amato an opportunity that he otherwise may not have gotten elsewhere. You may dicker over who came came out better, but both parties benefitted.

As far as rushing TOB and placing expectations on his first season, I don’t believe in it. But, I do believe that we don’t have anything to worry about anyway. I think TOB will get the job done in Raleigh.

i was coaching in nc when chuck came in—his staff—although fluid—was great with building relationships—however—you never felt that your kid would get the same respect that a florida kid would who was similar in size and measurable athleticism—strength, speed, agility, etc—chuck talked a lot about recruiting the state well—however—it worked that way only for the elite—baker, brown, etc—noah’s comments re: coach sheridan and coach o’cain are on target—perception through comparison probably made chuck seem to be less accessible and proactive about hs football in nc than he was—to be the best in nc—not to mention the upper echelon of the acc—we must compete for and win more than our share of nc talent

TOB reminds me a lot of Dick Sheridan. A lot of substance. Not a lot of flash. I don’t mean the last statement in a bad way. Sheridan won seven games per season at a time when no improvements were made to C-F. He was 6-1 vs. UNC, took NCSU to six bowl games, and finished in second place twice in the ACC. I think TOB will win 7-9 games in most years at NC State. What will be interesting to see is can he win an ACC title at State, make it to a big bowl game, and win 10 or 11 games in a season? He was solid at BC and I think he’ll at least match that at NC State.
