Redux of Castrated Turkeys Redux

There’s good mojo associated with that thread title, so we will have to stick with it, despite the God-awful syntax. The winner will get a steamrolling (and hopefully overconfident) UNC squad tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Believe it or not, Jeff is stuck at a wedding and is limited to e-mail. He had a couple of items to pass along, as a warm-up to “game thread” action:

– James T. Valvano would have turned 61 today, God rest his soul. Will that lead to some divine intervention? SFN is not ruling it out.

– NC State’s 14-point deficit was the second-largest halftime margin overcome in ACCT history. #1, of course, is the infamous NC State collapse against Maryland in the semifinals a few years back. You might remember that especially for our manager drawing a technical from Larry Rose for taking too long to wipe up the court.

– “The Jacket” is now 3-0.5.

The action will commence shortly.

Halftime Update: That was not a good last minute. You can’t let the Hokies get that second possession and the chance (which was realized) for positive momentum entering the half. It’s a decent 6-point lead, but it feels mighty tenuous, especially given how little VT has gotten from Zabian Dowdell. Of course, we didn’t get much from our bigs, either. Horner and Nieman? Money. Ferguson? Competent. Atsur? Everybody needs to think good thoughts. We are not tired. If we lose, that won’t be the reason. The guys have shown great adrenaline and determination.

Very cool. Gutty. Great FT shooting. Scary TO’s, but they were able to maintain. Clutch baskets down the stretch. It’s tough to play at that pace and keep your head in the game – witness Grant’s pass to the backcourt. Ack! But then he came right back with a great rebound…

I defied all jinx protocol by watching AND taping the game, so now I get to do the same thing tomorrow 🙂

    Well done Sid and Co.!

That interview with Grant changes my perception of him a little. I’ve been dogging him all year and he still at times drives me completely batty, but I do like the attitude and he hit some big free throws down the stretch. I’m not ready to completely get off his back until he stops taking his eye off the ball/the guy he’s passing it to. If he cuts out the mental lapses he’s out of my doghouse.

Anyone notice the laid back smile and wink Sid gave to the team with about what… 10 minutes to go… when VT tied it up. The entire aura around this program is such a breath of fresh air. I was cautiously optimistic throughout the game… instead of anticipating the meltdown. I mean seriously… college sports is actually fun… imagine that. The wink and smile versus the tie choke and scowl is THE difference between the Pack today and the Pack last year. Kudos to the staff.

    Finish the miracle boys…

I have bashed Grant too, but give him credit today – except for the Airball lay-up. Dont think I have ever seen that.

Yeah, we had ice veins today at the line… VT didn’t. Difference right there

I was so thrilled when Washington fouled out. Mainly because I was sick of looking at his mother in the stands. Was he the only player with a parent in attendance?

GA, I saw the wink. Thought the same thing — that exuded looseness, coolness and confidence. Just the traits you need in a tight tournament game.

Yes, we were a 6 seed in 1987, and we beat the Holes in the finals who had previously not lost an ACC game. We were a 8 seed in 1997 when, in Herb’s first year, we won three in a row to get to the finals only to run out of gas against the Holes.
