Pack Gets 10th Seed; The Maryland Entry (Updated Sun)

N.C. State will play the #7 seed on Thursday at 7 pm. If the Pack wins, we would play the #2 seed on Friday at 7 pm

Currently – Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Clemson could all end up as the ACC’s 7th seed. If Georgia Tech loses today against Boston College, then Duke would be guaranteed the 6th seed regardless of the result of the Blue Devils’ game with Carolina.

If you want to follow who could earn the 2nd seed then you should click here.

In short

* VIRGINIA is the second seed if one of UNC, BC and VPI win.

* NORTH CAROLINA will be the second seed if they defeat Duke and VPI beats Clemson.

* BOSTON COLLEGE will be the second seed with a win over Georgia Tech and a Virginia Tech loss to Clemson.

* VIRGINIA TECH becomes the second seed with a win over Clemson, a BC win over Georgia Tech and a Tarheel loss to Duke.

Wolfpack Gets #10 Seed
Who would have thought that the Miami-FSU game would actually mean something to us? But, the Seminoles come from behind win over the Hurricanes was pretty big for the Wolfpack’s season as now:

(1) NC State is guaranteed the 10th seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament (two seeds better than was projected by the media at the beginning of the season)

(2) Florida State still holds hope that they can play their way into the NCAA Tournament and help clear another ACC team from the radar of the NIT.

Relatedly, Joe Lunardi of ESPN’s Bracketology currently projects Georgia Tech IN the NCAA Tournament as one of the “last four in”.

Maryland Game Entry
Sidney Lowe says that the Pack is still full of fight and not ruling out a run towards the NCAA Tournament. We will all see if the Dr. Jeckyll-Wolfpack team that likes to takes the floor today in College Park where the Pack is a 15 point underdog to the hottest team in America. ^Agreed 110%.

I’m pumped about this. We have a great shot Thursday IMO, especially if Henderson is out. We will need supreme effort on the glass. And if we can beat Duke, I’m not scared of UVa at all. They’ve staggered somewhat down the stretch, and I don’t know that they are a good enough team to beat us three times. Getting even further ahead of myself, if that lead to a Saturday game against VT…

My money is on Maryland to win it, though they’ll have to get 4 since they finished as the 5 seed.

I just want one win at the ACC’s, it would make us 4-2 vs. other Big Four teams, and put us finishing ahead of everyones expectations by a mile.

I honestly have no idea what these guys look like after game day with some playing 40 minutes and Atsur still probably receiving treatment for his hamstring. If we are fortunate enough to get one win, you probably have to throw out how we “match up” with another team since we don’t know how this team would look like in back to back games (maybe this is why some schools enter early season tourneys).

I know McCauley wants this rematch vs. McBob more then anything. He and Costner are going to have to dominate the paint for us to have a remote shot. Duke gurds the three line better then anyone so it’s got to be inside out all day. Atsur and Fells will get some open kick outs but we have to try and hammer it inside, maybe even get them into some foul trouble.

It’s official. We get Duke and then UVA: http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/acc-mtournament-central-2007.html

I think this bracket sets up very well for the Pack. If we can get by the Blue Devils, watch out!

The only thing holding us back will be our stamina, not our will to win. You can throw records out the window. Let’s hope we break the Florida winless streak Thursday evening…

Does everyone think Henderson deliberately hit Hansbrough in the face? On the replay, it looks to me like Henderson went up to block the shot and then tried to brace for a collision, as he turned his head away. If he was trying to hit Hansbrough in the face, wouldn’t he be looking at him?

Is his suspension already a given? I could see it being lifted by the ACC if Duke appeals and says it was an accident. After all, this is Duke and Coach K we’re talking about here.

  6. Wulfpack 03/04/2007 at 7:45 PM #

^He was ejected, hence he is suspended by rule. No ifs, ands or buts.

I do not think it was intentional. I do, however, think it was flagrant. Given the severity of the blow, and Duke’s large deficit, I feel the officials were right to eject him. It was totally unnecessary and uncalled for at the time. It wasn’t as if Hansbrough was going for a wide open dunk to shove it in their face. He got wacked with incredible force, no play on the ball.

I know Hansbrough is the butt of a lot of crap from opposing fans. But he takes a beaten more than any player I have ever seen. And he keeps on bringing it. I hate UNC. But I love the way Tyler Hansbrough brings it.

wulfpacker – You’re right = but he gives as good as he gets. 2 wrongs don’t make a right….It was very wrong to do what Gerald did, but you know what, if a certain team isn’t trying to score in that situation nothing happens.

don’t forget who the only school to play there way into the championship game while having to play on thursday is…that run back in sendek’s first year where then freshman justin gainey played 160 minutes of acc tourney hoops gives all hope. still if we can beat duke the barometer is uva who has beaten us twice already. its also the same battle as all year mind over matter, will determination make the body do what it has no energy to accomplish? the year we won the old playin game to nearly beat unc on sunday the offense was essentially let cc harrison and/or ishua benjamin hold the ball until 5 seconds and then try and make a play, much easier to have the energy for 4 games in 4 days with that offense than with a true offense.

Duke with an even shorter bench. I love the sound of that. Maybe Roy was trying to draw and ejection and do us a solid for Thursday. LOL.

    Heelfan here.
Henderthug out is big for the Wolfies. Hopefully that will level the depth between the two teams and you guys can hit some open shots and beat them. They looked pretty beaten down this afternoon.

Dook is now two for two on cheap shots to Hansbrough’s face in losses on senior day. At least this one drew a whistle (cf. Dockery’s handiwork from last season). You guys do a pretty good number beating up Hansbrough and I’m not saying you have to like him, but if you don’t respect him then you don’t know basketball. The guy is a pure player and I don’t know many fans that would turn him down. I won’t make you admit it, but he plays with heart and takes his fair share of licks, tonight being just an example among many.

  11. jhmd2000 03/04/2007 at 9:21 PM #

Dook’s box score from tonight has exactly one bench player with double digit minutes (Henderthug with 30). Since Gerald has other plans for Thursday night’s game, that would mean we would look to #7 in M.P. (a player who logged six minutes tonight). That is GOOD news for the Pack.

  12. choppack1 03/04/2007 at 9:26 PM #

jhmd – Clearly, Henderson is in the wrong. Hansborough isn’t going to put on the breaks for anyone and he was still doing what he does best when this happened. I’d like Hansborough if he was in red – he’s one of those guys who you don’t like in the opposition, but when he’s on your team, he’s the man.

As a competitor, I see how these things happen. The entire Duke team has typically embodied the warrior spirit that Hansborough displays. They were being punked by him tonight and Henderson decided he’d send a message.

  13. vtpackfan 03/04/2007 at 9:31 PM #

What a waste of time talking about Tyler Hansbra. Yes he plays for the Holes, yes he was involved in a crazy play near the end of todays game that involved a suspension. As a State fan my interest stops there. Would it be great to have him in red, ah… well, ok. I’ll take Durant from Texas, Afflalo from UCLA, and Lofton from Tenn. while we’re just acting stupid.

  14. ruffles31 03/04/2007 at 9:41 PM #

Thank you Time Warner. NOT!!!!!!! The only game that will not be shown in HD in the Raleigh area for the ACCT will be the Dook-NCSU game!!!!!!!

As for the incident with Henderson and the mouth breather, aka Hansborough, my main questions are this:

    1. Why was he still in the game with 15 seconds left in a game that was already decided? Roy should of had pulled him IMO.

    2. Tyler gets the rebound off the missed FT and he should of brought it out to the top of the key and let the time run out. When he went up strong, he should of expected to get fouled.

Now I am not saying that I approve of THAT hard of a foul against him, but as Chris Rock once said, “I’m not saying I would do the same thing, but I undertstand.”

  15. TNCSU 03/04/2007 at 9:50 PM #

It WAS intentional — anyone who has played Bball knows you don’t go up for a rebound with your arm bent — his arm was never extended. It was a “flying” elbow that Ric Flair would be proud of. Hansbrough is a tough player, and it’s definitely easy to dislike when he’s on the OTHER team. Whether you agree he should have been in or out, it was a CHEAP shot by a DOOKIE! I think we matched up against Dook pretty well, but even better without Henderson. Packer did all he could to defend Henderson, but he’s wrong….Henderson lost it, and went up with the intent to put a hurtin’ on Hansbrough…a CHEAP SHOT…may as well call it like it is. BTW, anyone heard the status on Hansbrough? Did he break his nose?

  16. Mike 03/04/2007 at 10:32 PM #

Nose is not broken. I think Henderson was innocent, stuff happens. I would rather have him in the game Thursday – often teams will rally around a player missing one game. Plus when we win, I want to be able to say we beat them full strength.

Lastly, this is not a Hansborough thread, but I would take him any day of the week. I think he gets away wiht shuffle feet but the kid has heart and never quits. Why was he in the game then? Wacky things happen, and both teams had front line players in the game. And you cant tell your players not to play hard.

  17. TNCSU 03/04/2007 at 10:51 PM #

^^Mike, I agree with everything in your post except the second sentence. I guess we’ll never know for sure, as I doubt he’ll own up to it, but you don’t just accidently hit someone square in the nose with an elbow when they are right in front of you — again he never extended his arm to the ball. That being said, I’d probably rather have him playing because I think we match up well even with him in their lineup.
