Pack Gets 10th Seed; The Maryland Entry (Updated Sun)

N.C. State will play the #7 seed on Thursday at 7 pm. If the Pack wins, we would play the #2 seed on Friday at 7 pm

Currently – Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Clemson could all end up as the ACC’s 7th seed. If Georgia Tech loses today against Boston College, then Duke would be guaranteed the 6th seed regardless of the result of the Blue Devils’ game with Carolina.

If you want to follow who could earn the 2nd seed then you should click here.

In short

* VIRGINIA is the second seed if one of UNC, BC and VPI win.

* NORTH CAROLINA will be the second seed if they defeat Duke and VPI beats Clemson.

* BOSTON COLLEGE will be the second seed with a win over Georgia Tech and a Virginia Tech loss to Clemson.

* VIRGINIA TECH becomes the second seed with a win over Clemson, a BC win over Georgia Tech and a Tarheel loss to Duke.

Wolfpack Gets #10 Seed
Who would have thought that the Miami-FSU game would actually mean something to us? But, the Seminoles come from behind win over the Hurricanes was pretty big for the Wolfpack’s season as now:

(1) NC State is guaranteed the 10th seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament (two seeds better than was projected by the media at the beginning of the season)

(2) Florida State still holds hope that they can play their way into the NCAA Tournament and help clear another ACC team from the radar of the NIT.

Relatedly, Joe Lunardi of ESPN’s Bracketology currently projects Georgia Tech IN the NCAA Tournament as one of the “last four in”.

Maryland Game Entry
Sidney Lowe says that the Pack is still full of fight and not ruling out a run towards the NCAA Tournament. We will all see if the Dr. Jeckyll-Wolfpack team that likes to takes the floor today in College Park where the Pack is a 15 point underdog to the hottest team in America. UNC wins, they finish 1st.

    UNC loses, then finish 5th.

Shooting guard: This guy seems to be on top of it. Here is what he posted.

    Scenario #7:
UNC loss/VT loss/BC win = 2-way tie for 1st (UVA, BC), 3-way tie for 3rd (UNC, VT, MD), 3-way tie for 7th (GT, CL, FS)
    1. BC 2. UVA 3. VT 4. MD 5. UNC 6. DU 7. CL 8. GT 9. FS

    Scenario #8:
UNC loss/VT loss/BC loss = 4-way tie for 2nd (UNC, VT, BC, MD), 2-way tie for 8th (FS, CL)
    1. UVA 2. VT 3. BC 4. MD 5. UNC 6. DU 7. GT 8. CL 9. FS

    Scenario #3:
UNC win/VT loss/BC win = 3-way tie for 1st (UVA, UNC, BC), 2-way tie for 4th (VT, MD), 3-way tie for 7th (GT, CL, FS)
    1. UNC 2. BC 3. UVA 4. VT 5. MD 6. DU 7. CL 8. GT 9. FS

    Scenario #4:
UNC win/VT loss/BC loss = 2-way tie for 1st (UVA, UNC), 3-way tie for 3rd (VT, BC, MD), 2-way tie for 6th (DU, GT), 2-way
    tie for 8th (FS, CL)
    1. UNC 2. UVA 3. VT 4. BC 5. MD 6. GT 7. DU 8. CL 9. FS

I misread at least one of these. Assuming this guys is right, let’s try that again…

    Duke/BC wins – Clemson, UVa

Duke/GT wins – GT, then VT

UNC/BC wins – Clemson, then BC

UNC/ GT wins – Duke, then UVa

  4. ShootingGuard 03/04/2007 at 4:28 PM #

    Mr O,

That…UNC/ GT wins – Duke, then UVa…lineup is what I was thinking might be incorrect on yours or the PackPride guy’s projections (although I am given to error and also lazy in checking my thinking sometimes—so thanks for the update).

I’m with you…I don’t really want GT…They would just press and foul and Paul Hewitt would whine and have his goons hack us all night like he did last time, and we just don’t have the guns or the depth to beat him and his punks back off.

I would gladly take the Clemson, UVA/BC route…

I REALLY want Duke but only if we show up and beat them this time around…Otherwise, I would just as soon face Clemson…

  5. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 4:32 PM #

Unfortunately, GT is up by 11 points and Duke is behind early. The most likely scenario(two home teams winning) is the Duke, then UVa route.

  6. WolfPup35 03/04/2007 at 4:38 PM #

I would much rather play Dook than GT, like ShootingGuard said, ” Paul Hewitt would whine and have his goons hack us all night like he did last time” Who does Hewitt think he is anyway, Cheney (sp?)? “We can’t seem to beat NCSU, go out there and beat the shit out of them” Seems like the GT BBall motto should be “If you cant’ beat ’em, beat ’em down” That’s Atlanta for you. The only way we can beat them is if the refs in the game call a tight game, like one hand check=one foul type of game.

Also, congrats to the Wolfpack women on a great run in the ACC tourney, came up short, but what a supreme effort. Good luck to coach Yow and the girls in the NCAA’s! Go ‘Pack!

Honestly…I think that would like to play Duke over some of these teams.

    (1) We laid a miserable egg vs them earlier in the season and would like a shot at redemption

    (2) I think that we actually match up better with Duke than some of the others

    (3) We have defeated Carolina and Wake this year. It would nice to win one against each Big Four team.

  8. WolfPup35 03/04/2007 at 4:50 PM #

Speaking of Wake Forest……..HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Almost nothing is as sweet as seeing Digger…errrr…Prosser have an absolutely horrid season. The ‘Dirty Deacons’ finally get their due!

    P.S. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  9. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 4:53 PM #

Personally, I would love to see Duke win today which means UNC would finish 5th and Duke 6th.

Can you imagine both teams playing on Thursday? It may never happen again and obviously playing four games decreases the likelihood that either team will win the title.

In terms of interesting matchups, Duke in the 1st round is appealing. Of course, we recently pounded GT for 75% of a game. So who knows what our best matchup is?

It doesn’t look like BC is going to win, so Clemson is for the most part eliminated as a 1st round opponent.

Does anybody else agree with me when I say…SCREW Hansbrough! I am so sick of him being the media’s golden boy!
“He simply out wills the other team” “He’s the best player in the ACC” TRIPE AND DRIVEL!! HE IS ANOTHER KRIS LANG…Take Lawson away and he’d be worthless. (I DO give Lawson his props on offense..good guard, but you can keep him….he don’t play ‘D’!!). Hansbrough is NOT the best in the league..period.

  11. StateFans 03/04/2007 at 5:24 PM #

Clemson’s win means that they aren’t yet eliminated from making the NCAA tourney. A GT win may guarantee them a spot.

It isn’t likely…but it isn’t impossible that the ACC still has a chance to get NINE teams into the big Dance.

  12. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 5:28 PM #

Clemson and FSU are likely to play each other. So the loser of that game may be the team that stays home. I think Ga Tech has to make it at 8-8.

  13. Wulfpack 03/04/2007 at 5:34 PM #

“Does anybody else agree with me when I say…SCREW Hansbrough!”

No. I’d love to have him. He’s my kind of player. That coming from a STATE fan.

  14. burnbarn 03/04/2007 at 5:36 PM #

dook would be the best team for us to play in the first round. I agree on the match ups with them. FSU also would have been a good game.

I hope we do not get GT.

  15. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 5:40 PM #

How was that a foul on McBob?

  16. wolfpackbball 03/04/2007 at 6:28 PM #

    Hansbrough just got KTFO!

  17. BJD95 03/04/2007 at 6:28 PM #

I am very glad to play Duke. Motivation is sometimes an issue for us – and we’ll be motivated to beat Duke. UVA is tough, but beatable. VT likely up 3rd. Good draw.

Our worst matchups are, in order: UNC, MD, GT. Deep, athletic teams that press are trouble, as are fast PGs. Duke has the slowest PG in the league, and won’t press knowing they need to win 4 games in 4 days. We can’t face UNC or MD until the final.

Naturally, talking about maximizing our chances gets us up from .1 to 1 percent. Still, it’s something.

  18. wolfpackbball 03/04/2007 at 6:29 PM #

BTW, why would Hansbrough be in the game with 15 secs left with a 12 point lead anyway. Glad to see them “AGGRESIVELY” go after the big boy while he was padding his rebound stats.

  19. old13 03/04/2007 at 6:38 PM #

The ACC has the worst BB refs in the country! I could do better taking the blind refs from the kindergarden and nursing home leagues!

  20. 98st8 03/04/2007 at 6:39 PM #

Duke gets the 7th seed and will play NC State. Gerald Henderson will not play against NC STATE on Thursday because of his ejection against UNC

  21. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 6:40 PM #

So is Henderson really suspended? Wow. What would really interesting is if the ACC reviews it and changes the call. That would be a huge controversy.

Duke without Gerald Henderson? Definitely helps us because he is the type of athlete that we have trouble with.

  22. 98st8 03/04/2007 at 6:40 PM #

^^WRAL just reported this… this is big as GH was by far Duke’s best player today

  23. Wulfpack 03/04/2007 at 6:42 PM #

^And for good reason. That was blatant. I know as State fans we are supposed to dislike anyone affiliated with UNC. But one guy I cannot bring myself to dislike is Hansbrough. Put him in an NCSU uniform, and we’re all elated. He plays with heart. He plays with passion. He plays with reckless abandon. Henderson is lucky he didn’t lay it down on him after the blow, it would have been very ugly.

  24. 98st8 03/04/2007 at 6:44 PM #

Wulfpack… agree, but what in the world is he doing in the game at that point… plenty of seniors to give time to with a 12 point lead and 30 secs left in the game. Just plain stupid by Roy
