Pack Gets 10th Seed; The Maryland Entry (Updated Sun)

N.C. State will play the #7 seed on Thursday at 7 pm. If the Pack wins, we would play the #2 seed on Friday at 7 pm

Currently – Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Clemson could all end up as the ACC’s 7th seed. If Georgia Tech loses today against Boston College, then Duke would be guaranteed the 6th seed regardless of the result of the Blue Devils’ game with Carolina.

If you want to follow who could earn the 2nd seed then you should click here.

In short

* VIRGINIA is the second seed if one of UNC, BC and VPI win.

* NORTH CAROLINA will be the second seed if they defeat Duke and VPI beats Clemson.

* BOSTON COLLEGE will be the second seed with a win over Georgia Tech and a Virginia Tech loss to Clemson.

* VIRGINIA TECH becomes the second seed with a win over Clemson, a BC win over Georgia Tech and a Tarheel loss to Duke.

Wolfpack Gets #10 Seed
Who would have thought that the Miami-FSU game would actually mean something to us? But, the Seminoles come from behind win over the Hurricanes was pretty big for the Wolfpack’s season as now:

(1) NC State is guaranteed the 10th seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament (two seeds better than was projected by the media at the beginning of the season)

(2) Florida State still holds hope that they can play their way into the NCAA Tournament and help clear another ACC team from the radar of the NIT.

Relatedly, Joe Lunardi of ESPN’s Bracketology currently projects Georgia Tech IN the NCAA Tournament as one of the “last four in”.

Maryland Game Entry
Sidney Lowe says that the Pack is still full of fight and not ruling out a run towards the NCAA Tournament. We will all see if the Dr. Jeckyll-Wolfpack team that likes to takes the floor today in College Park where the Pack is a 15 point underdog to the hottest team in America. The Terps are playing really well, expecting to see them do well in post season.
Talking about peaking, Al Thornton scored 45 today! Too bad, too little, too late.

Found a link about Javier Gonzalez at Cainsider. com, looks like what you’d expect for a late senior year pick up.

    http://www.caainsider.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=74&Itemid=99

    Analysis:
Does a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the foul line but usually misses the shot when fouled. Not ultra quick but accelerates well, he tends more to beat his man off the dribble with creative dribbling, changes in speed or a quick spin move rather than just blowing by them with his speed. He adapts well when he leaves his feet to either get his shot off or to find an open man. He gets beaten off the dribble more than he should, this is more due to a lack of effort than to a lack of quickness. His defense is not the only aspect of his game that needs improving, he could also use a little work on his jumper. Javi would rather drive to the basket rather then take a jumper, but his jumper could stand to be more consistent. His vision and aggressiveness make him an intriguing PG prospect but he will have to improve his jump shot consistency and defensive effort in order play at a high level in college

Didn’t watch any of the second half but I could tell the athleticism and strength on the glass was going the Turtles way. McCualey faught well on a few possesions under the basket just before the half, but besides that we were out matched on the glass at every position. We are probably going to finish 11 or dead last in rebounding this year, which after losing Ced and Brackman is to be expected. That we didn’t come in 11 th or dead last is a credit to the team and Coach Lowe along with his staff. Go Pack! Let’s show em’ down in Tampa!

I wrote this on another thread responding to a question posed on whether the newest Pack recruit was very good. Thought I would add it here since what this Maryland team is doing now in the ACC could be duplicated by the Pack next year. I know that one year is completely different from the next, but it it’s still fun to kick the thought around.

The two frosh PG’s at Maryland were not big time recruits at the time. They started out 2-5 in the ACC this season and now have got things on a roll. It shows that for this squad it took time for them to adjust to the high caliber play, but once they did their confidence has grown and the production is right where it needs to be.

On the flip side, UNX has an all everything frosh PG in Lawson that is having “bad practices” and not showing great leadership in crunch situations while leading the Holes through a tough 4-4 stretch. My point is, you never know. Javi and Degand along with help fom Marques Johnson (after sitting out first semester) could be another Maryland type story next year. Or we may learn that none are well suited at this point to do the things it takes to be a pg at this level.

Terps are clearly the hottest (best?) team in the league right now. I won’t be surprised if they take the tourney.

One more to go for the ladies. I didn’t catch who won the other semis, but either way I gotta feel this team knows full well by now how to take care of business. Hats off for the team, a wonderful job by Coach Yow, and a fine showing by NC State in the ACC (finally). Good luck tommarrow, it’s going to get crazy in Greensboro. GO PACK!

I was really impressed with NC State tonight, they played close till about the final six minutes I believe.

  8. PackGirl 03/03/2007 at 8:13 PM #

The men could take a lesson in “hustle” from the lady Pack. After watching the 2 games back to back, it was obvious. Hopefully they will be more inspired in the tournament. State vs Holes tomorrow. Go State!

Props to the ladies and to Coach Yow and her staff. Truly a special run — and it’s not over yet!

TooYoung, cheer up-might be a good laugh next weekend.

The Terps might be the five seed, and playing…..Miami, their kryptonite, and in Florida to boot. It looks like we got GT, huh?

I would give props to the Maryland fans for taking the high road and chanting their seniors instead of some kind of insult. Rare classy move.

Thanks for that Papajohn, it’s good to see an unbiased in-depth analysis like that. Seems like all we’ve seen are either little blurbs or obviously slanted comments. I like the sound of it, it sounds like his major negatives, shooting and consistent effort, are 2 of the easier things to improve, IF he has the desire. Decision-making, aggressiveness, ball-handling under pressure, intangibles, things like that are much more difficult to improve. Considering that Towe and Lowe were supposedly impressed by his toughness, I generally like the sound of this kid.

Kudos to the Wolfpack Women on their victory yesterday.
I just looked at the Winston-Salem Journal’s on line website and their was “front page” mention of UNC’s victory but the Wolfpack’s victory over Duke was buried a few levels lower.
I always thought it was a Carolina rag in Deacons clothing.

I don’t see how Ga Tech doesn’t make it at this point. Even F$U is making a hard push all the sudden. Not sure I really want to face any of the four teams that could earn the 7 seed… damn, the ACC’s tough this year.

On an unrelated note, anyone see the thread on PackPride asking if Costner is already better than Hodge? I love that place… 😉

Sorry for a bit of a digression, but congrats to the Lady Pack for making the title game in such a turbulent year for them and for Coach Yow. Also, congrats to Coach Jordan and the wrestling team for winning the ACC title for the first time in three years. I was in my old seat at Reynolds yesterday for the wrestling tournament, and I couldn’t have been more pleased and proud. Good luck in the NCAAs for both teams.

Not sure about local coverage, but the women’s game is being televised on FSN South down here in GA. The second half is about to start and State leads by 3.

Go Clemson (no 2nd seed for UNC) and go Lady Pack!

  17. StateFans 03/04/2007 at 2:30 PM #

If everyone would look ONE ENTRY down the front page then you would see the Lady Wolfpack entry. Thanks

  18. BJD95 03/04/2007 at 3:20 PM #

No #2 seed for UNC. Hokies lose.

  19. RickJ 03/04/2007 at 3:25 PM #

Ga. Tech, FSU & Clemson are all still alive for an NCAA berth. I believe Tech is in with a win over BC today. FSU needs one in the ACC tourney, Clemson may need two.

  20. ShootingGuard 03/04/2007 at 3:28 PM #

    ^^^^^

Doesn’t the Hokies’ loss set UNC up for the #1 seed if they win today??

If BC loses to GT, wouldn’t we play Duke and then UVA if we win??

  21. ShootingGuard 03/04/2007 at 3:37 PM #

    ^^^^^

    Ooops. I misread someone’s post.

Looks like we are down to BC or UVA in the second round if we can progress.

I would like to have another shot at Duke in the first round—as my posted goals late in the season showed—especially now that UNC is out of the path so that the ACC won’t pay the refs to ensure a Duke-UNC matchup.

Beating Duke would mean a whole lot more this season than beating anyone else, so I would like the challenge that comes with it…4-2 vs the Big Four with wins over UNC & Duke plus a sweep of Wake is good press and good recruiting material for Sid and his undermanned crew based on preseason expectations. Of course, we need for that matchup to unfold first and do our part later in the week by winning the dang game…

A poster on packpride named bepackbeproud had every scenario broken down. Assuming he was correct, then there are four possibilities left:

    BC/UNC wins – Clemson, then BC (0-2)

    UNC/GT wins – GT, then UVa (0-3)

    Duke/BC wins – Duke, then UVa (0-3)

    Duke/GT wins – GT, then VT (2-1)

    http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=178&F=2515#S=178&F=2515&T=109700&P=3

  23. Mr O 03/04/2007 at 3:44 PM #

GT is up 16-4 already. They are so athletic and deep. Tough matchup for us in the 1st round. Obviously, we would prefer VT over UVa, but I don’t see UNC losing to Duke.

  24. ShootingGuard 03/04/2007 at 4:00 PM #

    ^^^^^

If GT wins and UNC wins, wouldn’t GT get the #6 seed with Duke getting the #7??

  25. ShootingGuard 03/04/2007 at 4:02 PM #

(Based on GT’s split with Duke and win over UNC which Duke wouldn’t have as both lost to UVA).
