Official “Hell, Yes!” Thread (NC State 79, UVA 71)

Words can’t describe the elation. It was almost like the complete inverse of the Wisconsin Sweet Sixteen collapse. The team is confident, and played that way. And NC State is two wins away from its first ACCT title in 20 years. Here’s what I said Thursday morning:

My gut says that the Pack upsets UVA if it can get past Duke.

Here’s a few more random thoughts on the biggest win of Sidney Lowe’s young coaching career:

– Sidney Lowe said “We can’t come out and just jack up 3s. That’s not who we are.” I almost wept with joy.

– Lowe correctly said that Brian Nieman made the biggest plays of the night. He sure as hell did. The charge he took with a slender 68-66 lead completely changed the game. Raycom had already put 2 points on the board for Virginia, and the announcers said the Cavs would be shooting for the lead. As Lee Corso would say – “Not so fast!”

– In between ridiculously stupid plays, Grant scored 9 points in a row for us, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. He stepped it up big time, though he still induced several heart attacks in Wolfpack Nation.

– We have now won 2 straight games against legitimate opponents, despite getting squat from Fells offensively. We didn’t do that once in the regular season. What happens if he gets hot?

– NC State is 5-2 against the other 4 teams still in the tournament. Craziness.

– NC State is 4-0 against possible semifinal opponents.

– Every 10 years, we are apparently pure magic in the ACCT.

– This is probably the best ACCT in league history, so far. Too bad so few are in the stands to see it (Note to ACC foofs – never south of Atlanta, never north of DC).

– I want Wake to lose. I could definitely see the NIT committee still viewing our semifinal as a virtual “play-in” game. Plus, VT could beat UNC in the final if we stumble tomorrow. Wake can’t.

– What did you do to change our mojo at the half? I changed every article of clothing, put a hat on (backwards), changed couches, and turned off the fireplace. Only have 1 HDTV, so couldn’t change that. Plus, I badmouthed Gavin until he started making me look like an uninformed jackass (not hard to do, I know)…

After reviewing SFN after last nights game, and picking up all the lucky clothes talk, I kind of giggled.

At halftime, I switched back to the clothes I wore yesterday. And after the second half I’m afraid to wash them. Or shave. After the win tonight, I Cou’Tou’d to the Sports Illustrated poster, just like last night.

Somebody said after the UNX win “It’s all gravy from here.”

Boy! The gravy is tasting lovely right about now!

Starting to believe. It feels so good after so many years of waiting for the collapse.

Break out the brooms. We’re headed for a sweep of the Hokies.

I live here in Tampa and have been to both games so far. The Dook game was the first time I’d seen us play in person this year. Here are my thoughts/observations for whatever it’s worth.

    1) the red PIMP jacket looks even better in person! Sid is coaching his arse off.

    2) Contrary to media reports, the arena is actually pretty full and there
is a good contingent of fans in RED. Our little Tampa Wolfpack Club has actually spearheaded several WP fan events, and there is tons of partying going on outside the arena for all the schools. Are there some empty seats? Yes. The arena holds 22,000 people, so it’s not going to be like Greensboro. Tickets ARE readily available on the street and for under face value, but I refuse to feel sorry for scalpers b/c they can’t get double or triple face value this year. On a side note, I still don’t understand how these “ticket brokers” get all these tickets that are allegedly only distributed to the schools.

    3) officiating is absolutely horrible. the positive is Sid chews the refs’ ass constantly. He is not going to sit back and take their crap. I don’t know how much they show on TV but he works them over when he is pissed. It is refreshing to watch. The guys know he’s got their back.

    4) If you watch Sid coach he is actually telling the guys where to go to get the open shot. It’s very impressive. Still running the point from the bench.

    5) Grant is such a loose cannon; it’s eerily Julius Hodge-esque in so many ways

    I feel a UNX-NCSU final coming on!

  4. floridawolf 03/10/2007 at 12:17 AM #

I retract my comment about Greensboro. Did not realize that arena holds 23,000 according to the website. My apologies. Still do not think the Tampa venue is as bad as media is making it out to be.

Heck, I didn’t put on any special close. However, I did leave me jacket on – which I put on during the early run in the second half – until we won the game.

This win was GREAT!!!! So everyone cheer hard for the pack tomorrow, I’ll be missing the game on TV as I move back to Raleigh from Greensboro, McWufPacker is coming home babbbyyyy! I know its hard to beat a team three times in a year but I know we can do it!!! NCSU vs UNC for the ACC Championship anyone?

None of you fuckers – male or female – had better shave. I thought that went without saying!

I also made my cat get off my lap after Reynolds’ 3 cut the lead down to one.

I like being the only real Cinderella team left in the major tourneys. The spotlight is all ours. Let’s make it happen.

The 1987 and 1997 finals were State vs. Carolina. It would be a fine time for a rubber match, and it’s our turn to win…

  8. WAWolf 03/10/2007 at 12:35 AM #

it’s too bad we are getting exactly what we deserve…

  9. roanwolf 03/10/2007 at 12:39 AM #

Last night….watched the Duke game with newborn baby girl. State wins.
Tonight first half…..watched game alone……..14 points down
Second half….went got baby girl and watched the rest of the game.
Coincidence? Maybe but I really like the feeling of watching a pack team that can be down by 14 without having to deal with feelings of impending doom. I haven’t bought as many packs of rolaids this year. Thanks Sid.

it’s funny how school sports spirit can make non-superstitious people becoming ones. I am one of them.

  11. WildPack 03/10/2007 at 1:14 AM #

I was so upset after the first half I didn’t watch the second half until the score was 60 – 54. And then the guys tried to blow it. I DO NOT think Neiman was set on the charge call but it was key to the win.

I’ve worn the same shirt and sat in the same place for both games – no changes are planned for tomorrow. VPI will have their way after losing to us twice but it’s been fun. I hope the NIT is good experience for the bench.

I wish Tampa native TF could get on the floor – I bet he transfers to yet another school.

I was 17, getting ready to go to State in 1987 when V and team won it. Figured we’d make a couple of runs at the ACC Title while I was there….Well, it didn’t happen. The years have ticked by one by one and we haven’t put it all together once since then. Even if we don’t do it this weekend, I am sure before this decade ends we will after watching us the last two nights. I love Coach Sid. I love Engin. I love State. Go Pack. Win or lose tomorrow, 2006-7 was a success…For sure Sid will git ‘r done soon. We are the Red and White from STATE!

Swordfish, hey the baby called my cat and asked him to tape the game for both of us. If you’re interested I have it on tape, watched it already tonight and you’re welcome to it. Let me know of a way to get it to you. I live near crossroads in Cary. Email is [email protected].

I know it sounds picky, but can’t we win without Costner blowin’ up!

I don’t want him getting any ideas.

We are playing with house money at this point, so no reason not to go for it all. As Coach Case once said “it’s hard to beat a good team three times in one season” but here’s hoping Coach Sid has the magic to do it. I know if is a big word here, but, if the guys could beat VT and the Holes win the final would be epic. I’d love it and hope the Red reign falls all over Tampa Bay. I might need to dust off that old Peter Gabriel CD after all.

    GO PACK!

  17. justaguy 03/10/2007 at 7:16 AM #

I live in the Richmond area and the local writers, especially Bob Lipper, are having a tough time eating crow. The Pack’s win over Duke was all the pack’s doing, but last night’s game was, “an epic collapse”, by the Cavs as, “one defensive breakdown followed another.” Perhaps they might have noticed that the pack finally played a good half against the Cavs after 5 dud halves this season. Lipper’s ivory tower analysis of the Cavs consisted of, “You don’t let those other guys off the ropes.” Brilliant Bob! However he did observe, rightly, “[UVA’s] coach of the year was out maneuvered by the coach of the ACC tournament (so far).” If coach Lowe has reach he-who-cannot-be-named status with the Richmond writers that is high praise indeed. Looking at the faces of the Cav fans last night and reading Lipper this morning is sweet in a Mastercard priceless kind of way.

The real story, of course, is the play of the wolfpack. No wolfpack fan is can be surprised. Young teams with talent as supposed to get better during the season. That pack has done just that. It’s not luck or destiny, just great hoop.

Tudor says that Atsur “tweaked” his hamstring in the closing minutes. That’s a huge concern right now.

  19. waxhaw 03/10/2007 at 8:29 AM #

^ Does anyone have any more info on this? Talk about a buzz kill.

  20. Rochester 03/10/2007 at 8:29 AM #

^It’s going to take a lot more than a tweak to get Atsur out of the lineup right now. This is his last blast.

As for you guys talking about “sitting” on a lucky couch, what the hell? I NEVER sit during a Wolfpack game. I’m too nervous/excited. I stand the entire game, pace a little, jump a lot, scream a lot. I had hernia surgery two years ago (hernia was unrelated to antics during Wolfpack games) and had to stay on the couch. That lasted about a game. I couldn’t take it.

So Va. Tech wants another shot at us. They promise to play better defense this time. Whatever. Bring it on. We’re ready.

Great comeback Pack! VPI is next to fall!

Internets people beware; there is a dangerous heretic, named Stu Coman, loose at “The Wolfpacker”:

“However, the success of a recruiting class is not determined by Web site gurus, newspaper reporters or message board posters.”

For mojo, I just switched chairs – and didn’t tell any of the fools who went outside because they’d given up what was going on. They didn’t realize it till about 6 to go. Again – drunken fools.

But I will say that the past two days are the first two times I’ve ever worn the “This is Not Red” t-shirt that I bought at Carter-Finley last fall. Suffice it to say, the wife looked at me funny this morning when she saw the shirt draped carefully across the chair in our room, obviously ready to wear as opposed to ready for the laundry. “Are you wearing that again today?” Uhhhhh… yep.

  23. Texpack 03/10/2007 at 9:32 AM #

My 14 year-old and I had a running battle over GG last night. After every bonehead play, I would bash. After every great play he would praise. It’s just been fantastic. I had to watch the ’83 ACC Tournament run essentially alone in Owen Dorm over Spring Break. ’87 I was on a plane for the finals. This one will be with the kids. They are rapidly learning the feeling that comes with these post season runs. Go Pack.
