GT Helps the Pack

Congratulations to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets!

Tech’s win over Carolina last night in Atlanta made a big statement for the ACC’s push to get more than six teams into the NCAA Tournament. If the NCAA Tournament would have started before last night, Georgia Tech would not have made the field. But, their win last night serves to at least place the Yellow Jackets squarely on the bubble (with games to be played).

In yesterday’s great conversation on SFN you will find a lot of great commentary and analysis from our community. In short, it is clearly beneficial to NC State’s hopes for an NIT bid for Georgia Tech (and Clemson and Florida State) to perform well and make a push into the NCAA Tournament.

With the ACC Tournament still to play (click here for a mathematical analysis of the NCAA Tournament), who knows what might happen.

A few ACC items of note:

* The sub-story to Ty Lawson’s benching was that he “had a bad practice”. Riiiiiiight. God I hope that this guy jumps to the NBA this year. Last night’s performance helps to further underscore his importance to the Tarheels.

* Fantastic ACC Notes that shouldn’t be ignored.

* 850 TheBuzz this morning.

* N&O’s audio of Talking with Tudor.

* Does this mean that the ACC office has rid itself of the “great facilitator”, Fred Barakat?

* It was great to see Ben McCauley play well against Wake on Wednesday night after struggling for a couple of games. Despite the great year that McCauley has put together, he has generally struggled when being guarded by longer, athletic players like Brandon Wright at Carolina. McCauley may be the primary beneficiary of JJ Hickson’s presence in Raleigh next season as it will allow Big Ben to move to his natural power forward position where he will consistently have more advantageous physical match-ups in the post.

* From Dave Glenn’s notes that we previously linked:

With two consecutive horrible seasons in conference play, Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser is nearing some dangerous territory. Consider this: Since 1975, ACC basketball programs have had streaks of three or more seasons when they lost more than 60 percent of their conference games only 13 times. In 12 of those situations, the coach who started the streak was fired without ending it.

The lone exception was Maryland coach Gary Williams, and his truly was a unique case. His three straight horrible ACC seasons (1991-93) came in the aftermath of the disastrous Bob Wade era (1987-89) in College Park. Williams ultimately righted the ship, going to 11 straight NCAA Tournaments (1994-2004) and winning the national championship in 2002.

With a 3-13 ACC record last year and a 4-10 mark so far this season, Prosser now has two straight seasons that surpass the 60-percent losing mark. Looking ahead, he’ll enter 2007-08 without his most productive player from this year (senior center Kyle Visser), and with a possible starting lineup of five sophomores. A third straight bad season would put Prosser in the midst of some very undesirable company.

With respect to the two “ACC titles” question. The reason I asked because this article from ESPN confused me.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=270600258

“The Cavaliers need only to win their regular season finale at Wake Forest on Saturday to claim their first ACC title since 1995.”

  2. redfred2 03/02/2007 at 5:43 PM #

I’m confused with the definition of titles here???

The link I TRIED to highlight back up there earlier has a lot of good info. Everett Case won the first ever, and THREE in a row, ACC “titles.”

Doesn’t the Freshman of the Year award traditionally go to the best Ga Tech Freshman?

The tourney champ has always been considered the ACC champ…at least until Duke moved ahead of Carolina, and they started counting regular season titles as well.

Of course, we have become banner ho’s as well and do the same thing

A win this weekend or in the 1st round of ACC tournament and NC State should go to the NIT. As much talent as Paul Hewitt has had, I question his coaching ability. He’ll probably choke this weekend and piss away all that talent. Or, he might go to the ACC final. It is a crap shoot with him.

Hell, I think big Lew would be alright if he’d like eat something once in a while….just a burger, maybe some ribs….something!

Lew, Trev, and Horner are going to provide depth now, and hopefully compliment the incoming players practicing the right way. They want to play and earn some minutes so they will compete with every inch of god given talent they posses. This will result in a better prepared, highly conditioned Pack squad next year (a mirror opposite of this season). Not only has in game depth plauqed this years squad at times but practice has been more an obstacle then a benfit.

Looking further ahead, say three years or so, these three could very well still be here as Seniors (or RS jr in Lew’s case). THey could help bridge any gap between guys graduating or leaving early to go pro. The temptation is there to say that if “so and so tranfers then we can get someone really good”. I realize that in theory that this is true most of the time. But these guys are part of the family until THEY decide otherwise, and we should include them in our hopes and expectations when looking ahead.

Many in the national media have never understood that there is not, and never has been such a thing as a “regular season title” in ACC Basketball. Since the inception of the league, it’s champion has been determined by the winner of the ACC Tournament. I would also add that any league that designates it’s tournament winner for it’s automatic bid to the NCAA tourney is also declaring them the conference champion in the eyes of the NCAA.

  11. TNCSU 03/02/2007 at 10:31 PM #

I’m not totally against declaring a regular season champion — I think it started with Carolina (not Duke). Carolina has done well in the regular season for decades, but truthfully, has very few ACC titles to show for their supposed dominance. Same with NCAA titles — Dean coached for ~30 years and has 2 NCAA championships — nothing to sneeze at, but considering the number of regular season titles and HS All-Americans, I don’t think it’s that impressive. Of course, I’m biased, as I hate UNX! At this point, I’d rather ANYONE other than UNX or DOOK hang a regular seaon OR tournament champion banner in their coliseum. Go Cavs — beat Wake, and UNX can’t hang another banner!!

For those interested, a good article about Javi Gonzalez’s commitment. I already like him. I think he’s a winner! GO PACK!

Javi sounds like a scrapper, it’s going to be very interesting to watch the guard play next year. Basically, this recruiting class looks like a pretty good answer for the needs of this team right now. All are reported to be gritty defenders, need positions (PG and C) addressed, and one is McStar. They’ll compliment the offensive firepower we have pretty well.

Saw this video on YouTube the other day. Hickson has some shooting range on him. The fans are kind of silly, but it’s not a bad look into the future.

As a side note, is this Gonzalez kid really any good? Didn’t look like any other teams that are of any caliber were interested in the kid…

  15. Dr. BadgerPack 03/03/2007 at 9:57 AM #

Gonzalez’s high school coach said that his ability to take over a game compares to Doug Edwards (link to basketball stats below). While the two don’t play the same position, it’s always nice to be compared to someone who made it to the NBA. Edwards also had a nice career collegiately.

As a side note, is this Gonzalez kid really any good?

We have to trust our coaching staff in evaluating talent, I guess. Gonzalez didn’t get a lot of hype until recently and maybe one of those kids, who kind of fly under the radar.

I don’t expect him to come in and play like Ty Lawson has done for Carolina, as a true freshman, but I think hope he will add some depth to the PG position, which we lacked.

  18. vtpackfan 03/03/2007 at 1:54 PM #

The two frosh PG’s at Maryland were not big time recruits at the time. They started out 2-5 in the ACC this season and now have hot things on a roll. It shows that for this squad it took time for them to adjust to the high caliber play, but once they did the confidence has grown and the production is right where it needs to be.

On the flip side, UNX has an all everything frosh PG in Lawson that is having “bad practices” and not showing great leadership in crunch situations while leading the Holes through a tough 4-4 stretch. My point is, you never know. Javi and Degand along with help fom Marques Johnson could be another Maryland type story next year. Or we may learn that none are well suited at this point to do the things it takes to be a pg at this level.

On Javi, the N&O article said he led his team in rebounds this year, while also averaging 21 points and 5 assists. He sounds like a good athlete.

And that, IMO, is going to be the biggest thing about the incoming class for next year. Our team’s athleticism, quickness, and leaping ability are going to be improved by a huge amount. While it may take some time for them to gel and learn as freshmen, this is exactly what we need to become a better defensive and rebounding team, and a team that can truly get out and run. Plus, the depth will obviously help our players to stay fresh, be more aggressive without fear of fouling, etc.

Plus, Sidney and his staff will get to reflect on the season and make some adjustments. They haven’t had much time since they were assembled, so I can imagine this might also provide for an improvement in on court results.

I’m really excited for next year.
