Flashback – Is the Roanoke Times Right?

Let’s hope their article after the Pack’s 81-56 win in Raleigh proves to be accurate foreshadowing. Beyond the reporter’s glum thoughts, you have these choice player quotes:

A.D. Vassallo: “In sports there’s always that one team or that one player that always performs good against you, and I think N.C. State’s got the upper hand against us.”

Jamon Gordon: “I really couldn’t tell you, man, to tell you the truth. It ain’t like they’re quicker than us. They ain’t faster than us. I guess against some teams you got their number, and they got ours.”

Any athlete will tell you how crucial your mental state is. Come out early and smack the castrated turkeys in the mouth, and see how they react. We know we’re in their heads at least a little bit – now, finish the job!

^^^Quick tangent – Just listened to Dave Telep on 850 the Buzz coming in to work. Someone called and asked about M. Johnson’s potential to play point for us next year. Telep said, “After seeing him play for three years, I just can’t see it. He’s more of a utility guard or wing player. I would be very surprised if he ended up at the point.”

Vasquez, the PG at Maryland is 6′ 5.5″/170 lbs. and was listed as a SG/SF out of HS — I think he has run the point pretty well at Maryland this year — particularly since he’s still a Freshman. Anyway, it is possible for a guy with MJ’s size to run the point — at least there are options. Any score updates on UNX game?

They bumped up State to a 6 seed and a lot safer on the NIT Bubble. Still no home game unless VT goes down.

As for a guy MJ’s size running the point, wasn’t there a 6’9″ cat who ran PG for the Lakers in the 80s, did pretty well until that HIV thing…

Yeah, he was okay — weren’t his initials MJ, too??

Dave Telep didn’t say Johnson wasn’t a point guard because of his size, did he? But because of his style of play. Gavin Grant is 6’7”, so he can be a great point guard?

I’m saying Vasquez was listed as a SG/SF out out HS, and now plays a pretty good point. I think Johnson will play a combo guard. If you look at our offensive scheme, we don’t really need a “true” PG (i.e. Lawson, Augustin, etc.) You’re welcome to believe everything Telep says, though.

BTW, I’m not arguing that MJ will play the point — I don’t think he will, either. I think Javi has the best chance at winning that position. I think MJ will come in off the bench — playing the point or 2G — just my guess, though. Heck, Sid may go with a 3 guard line-up and he’ll play the 3.

Since the topic has gone in the direction of talking about next year, here’s what I’m looking forward to: Options. Plain and simple we’re going to have options on the court as to not only who will play but how we’ll play, i.e. big, small, full court, half court. It’ll just depend on who is able to produce next year and when.

Next year will be very interesting. Assuming all freshman show up on campus, there will be 6 new scholly players on next years team.
