Flashback – Is the Roanoke Times Right?

Let’s hope their article after the Pack’s 81-56 win in Raleigh proves to be accurate foreshadowing. Beyond the reporter’s glum thoughts, you have these choice player quotes:

A.D. Vassallo: “In sports there’s always that one team or that one player that always performs good against you, and I think N.C. State’s got the upper hand against us.”

Jamon Gordon: “I really couldn’t tell you, man, to tell you the truth. It ain’t like they’re quicker than us. They ain’t faster than us. I guess against some teams you got their number, and they got ours.”

Any athlete will tell you how crucial your mental state is. Come out early and smack the castrated turkeys in the mouth, and see how they react. We know we’re in their heads at least a little bit – now, finish the job!

Could be we’re in their heads, but I’m hesitant to comment any further than that.

^So true! The PACK need a good start to get in the Hokies head early but we can not do like UVA and feel that we got them beat and not play the full 40 minutes.
I believe I saw a week or two ago where someone pointed out that it would be great to see us play BC in the semis or finals????
Wouldn’t that be an awesome match-up for the PACK after a 3rd upset in three days!!!!!
    GO WOLFPACK!!!!!!!!!!!
    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  3. MadWolf92 03/10/2007 at 11:53 AM #

^ I *truly* doubt that will happen.

If we’re thinking AT ALL about either the past VPI games or any game beyond today, we’re all screwed up. Nothing matters but today’s game.

One of the lessons to take from Sid is that underconfidence is as dangerous as overconfidence. Don’t be cocky, but it’s good to be confident.

The Lowe/O’Brien era is here. NC State isn’t Charlie Brown trying to kick the football anymore.

College Gameday folks — Bilas, Digger, and Hubie all three — touting the ‘Pack as potential “bid stealers”.

    March is fun again!

Quick tangent – Just listened to Dave Telep on 850 the Buzz coming in to work. Someone called and asked about M. Johnson’s potential to play point for us next year. Telep said, “After seeing him play for three years, I just can’t see it. He’s more of a utility guard or wing player. I would be very surprised if he ended up at the point.”

Another interesting comment from that show, either D Glenn or A Gold said, “Sidney Lowe is the best offensive coach in the league right now.”

Those of you that can remember the ‘little ACC’ probably remember that at this time of year you used to hear the coaches saying, “It’s awfully tough to beat a team three times in a season.” Just coach speak, but ironic with the new league configuration that it has come up for us.

Come on Courtney, show us something today! Ben, Brandon, Engin, Gavin and Bryan have all stepped up, come join the party!

    Go Pack!

Amen Packaholic, Amen. This IS the postseason, where you can’t look past who is currently in front of you. I’m excited and like to play the “what if” too but like someone has pointed out before, we’re playing with house money, let’s just go out there and take care of business and beat the turkeys. We can worry about the finals after the game if we win.

I think VPI players basically admitting we are in their heads is a big deal. If we can come out with high energy and get a significant early lead, you can’t tell me it won’t be in the Hokies’ minds.

I’m not saying today is a sure thing at all.

Sidney ‘s nba style offensive play calling using two man games should really start to help attract big names in the future

Like I said last night, NC State has beaten UNC (2), VT (swept UNC, beat Duke)TWICE DECISIVELY, Michigan (came on fairly strong late), DUKE (17), and Uva (24, 2nd seed ACCT).

A strong finish like this, especially if a win comes today, could lead up to a surprise bid to the NCAAT! These kids could very well play themselves INTO the big dance!

  14. MadWolf92 03/10/2007 at 1:36 PM #

I honestly think that Sid’s pro-style offense is working right now because we have a *pro* running it. Atsur will step right in to a European starting lineup next year. Bank on it. But I’ll wait to see what happens when we have a point guard that’s not Engin, and hopefully not Gavin.

  15. McPete 03/10/2007 at 1:41 PM #

    Wolfpup35:
Refer to the RPI. NC State HAS to win the ACCT to get in.

  16. RickJ 03/10/2007 at 1:42 PM #

I think VPI loves to play against teams that want to push the tempo. They like to counter punch against this type of team with their quickness and athleticism. UNC comes to mind – Wake was a perfect match-up for them yesterday.

To me, it is all about our legs. 3rd game in less than 48 hours.

This NC State team screws up just as much as previous teams. All teams screw up. The difference is that it doesn’t devastate their confidence when it happens. When someone fouls a 3 point shooter at the end of the game it doesn’t lead to turning the ball over on the next possession. Lowe radiates a quiet confidence and this is what the players see in tight situations.

  17. nsj 03/10/2007 at 1:45 PM #

    WolfPup35:

Not to argue your point, but there was some context to the College Gameday comments. They were in the middle of a “Cinderella” kind of discussion, talking about teams not currently in the NCAA tournament who might win their way in with conference tournament championships.

IMO, I think we’re probably in the NIT regardless of what happens today and definitely in the NIT if we win today. Our ticket to the Big Dance only gets punched if we cut down the nets in Tampa.

Hubie and Bilas picked us to win today — Digger voted VT.

    Go Eagles!!

  19. branjawn 03/10/2007 at 1:52 PM #

I haven’t read much of this thread, but I just emailed Andy Glockner (Dive to 65) asking if beating 3 straight Top 25 teams with a SOS around 30 would give us any chance. Especially IF we win today and say lose the Champ game by a few points.

I want us to win it all though and remove any discussion!

  20. WolfPup35 03/10/2007 at 1:52 PM #

GO EAGLES!! Digger has always been an idiot, he still holds a grudge because we beat him a few times.

  21. WolfPup35 03/10/2007 at 1:58 PM #

Charge?!?!? Hopsbrough was leading with his hip!

  22. packpigskinfan23 03/10/2007 at 2:03 PM #

looks like the BC/UNC game is going to be a backyard slug fest…. fun!!!
I wonder what Tyler will look like with his nose 2 inches to the side?
I cant pull for BC. Sean Marshall is the biggest prick in the ACC. I would love to punch him in the face.

  23. TNCSU 03/10/2007 at 2:04 PM #

    A – B – C!

  24. WolfPup35 03/10/2007 at 2:05 PM #

I thought McBob was the biggest prick in the ACC, the pricks are always the crybabies! (ex. Ferry, Laettner, Fox, etc.)

  25. branjawn 03/10/2007 at 2:13 PM #

Why didn’t Frasier give it up to Wright for the dunk? Not that I’m pulling for NC, I’m def not, but shouldn’t you give it up to the big man for the dunk?? Esp since he was responsible for the play anyways.
