ESPN’s Pat Forde on Lowe’s Miracle Run

If ever there was a “must read” article, this one is it. You can’t buy press this good. Something special is brewing in Raleigh, win or lose tomorrow afternoon. Sit back and feel the magic, and tell the kids your own stories about 1974, 1983, 1987, and every other moment of NC State’s proud basketball heritage. Tear-jerking excerpt:

As the latest upset wound to a conclusion Saturday, assistant coach Monty Towe leaned over and whispered in Lowe’s ear, “Happy birthday, Jimmy V.”

Since returning to his alma mater as head coach last spring, Lowe has paid more than one visit to Valvano’s grave site in Raleigh. When I talked to Lowe last week on the phone, he referred to V in the present tense, speaking with genuine affection for his former coach. Even before Towe whispered in his ear, Jimmy V was on Lowe’s mind in the final seconds.

“He would be very proud of these guys,” Lowe said of Valvano. “Their passion and the way they’ve been playing.”

V would be very proud of his former point guard, too. All he’s done in his first year in Raleigh is take the lowest-seeded team ever to the final of this august event. A No. 10 seed had never won a game in the ACC tourney before, much less three.

V would no doubt love the player meetings the Pack have held before every game this tournament, too. He’d love to hear Gavin Grant’s description of the message before the Pack played Duke on Thursday night: “Don’t come out and let anybody punk you.” Might not be soaring oratory, but it’s solid playground pragmatism.

I know what you guys are saying, but talk of NCAA infers that we will win the ACCT since that’s the only way we are getting in. So yes, I want that ACC Champ banner in the RBC bas as hell! And then I hope we make some noise in the NCAAT like I know we are capable of doing.

Difference makers today: Horner, Fells, Neiman.
Without them producing it’ll be a hard road.

We have a chance today. Control the tempo and make it a late game chess match.

“All Jim Valvano has ever asked is for his team to have him in position to win the game.” – Wally Ausley coming out of the timeout against UH with 0:44 left

I’ve got a feeling if Engin stays healthy for this game, he’ll have a big game – Man, that would be special to send him out with an ACC Championship! Defense and Rebounding will be KEY! – as usual!

  5. tvp 03/11/2007 at 9:53 AM #

I’m going on the record now: Courtney Fells goes all Lakista McCuller on the Heels, hits 7 triples and scores 26, leading us to a win. Fells will have a MONSTER game today.

  6. BJD95 03/11/2007 at 10:03 AM #

IMHO, Fells is the key. They won’t be able to overplay our bigs if Fells makes them pay. If they can’t do that, we can match their offensive output.

  7. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 10:14 AM #

BJD – I agree. I don’t think they really have anyone that matches up well with Courtney. Ginyard would be the closest, but he’s not an offensive threat. Also, Courtney, as well as GG, has been playing some great D — hopefully, he can keep it up. I wonder if we put Courtney on Lawson??

Whew…I’m trying to eat lunch and my stomach is in so many knots, I can’t even eat!! I feel good about our chances, though. An hour and a half to go! “We’re the Red and White from State, and we know we are the best,….” GO STATE!

Sidney Lowe only knew Saturday was special. He knew what his old coach would say. But what would he say in return? Lowe smiled.

“I wouldn’t be able to get a word in.”

    Happy birthday, Jimmy V.”

    I love that!

GO PACK!!!! I cant wait to celebrate on Hillsborough St, and drive past the Bell Tower every night and see it in RED!!!!

Isn’t it great to see a WOLFPACK team (not 1 or 2 players) flashing the WOLFPACK sign????
When was the last time we saw that… I can’t remember that in the last 15+ years.
We now have players that are passionate and proud to be a WOLFPACKER and not just a player for NC STATE!!!!

  12. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 10:50 AM #

Great point, sksr97! I love seeing the players flashing the Wolfpack sign, and proud to be a Wolfpacker. I haven’t seen a post from Chillywater lately, but I distinctly remember his repeated posts last week that NCSU would WIN the ACCT. I don’t think many took him seriously at that point, but now, the Cardiac Pack is back! CW was the first to come out and point at the fence and say, “We Can do it!” For someone who went to State during the 80’s (right after the Nat’l Championship), I overcome with emotion following this team!

*Lowe, a 46 long, has been wearing the same lucky red blazer, which can be seen from space, for this ACC run.*

I had to laugh out loud at the seen from space comment. Good article!

I think that if the Heels put Hans Solo on McCauley again, McCauley will have a huge day. and Costner can score on Wright as he’s already proven. Our bigs can have a huge day.

I about shattered the windows when Grant threw that pass about three feet behind Fells, but I saw Grant go back down court on D and he ripped down the VT miss for the rebound to get it back. Then he tried to step through that double team late, and I thought he had traveled but luckily he was fouled. Atsur did make two very uncharactoristic TO’s yesterday.

I am glad to see Sidney COACHING and staying on top of these guys during the ballgames. It’s fun to watch and listen to him whenever the mics pick him on the sidelines. Of course, when I say that Sidney is on top of the players, I mean that he is guiding them, versus oppressing their spirit.

I don’t think I’ve seen a post about Ferg’s cut to the basket and the back handed lay in!!! Great to see that!!! Little by little everyone on this team is playing with more confidence and adding their small contributions to the cause. NEIMAN!!!…HORNER!!! (still needs to shoot more though)… This whole (((TEAM))) has come a long way over the course of ONE season!!!

The irony in this all of this is that we have been doing a great job and VERY MUCH dictating tempo, but not just for the sake of dictating tempo, and not at all at the expense of our own offense.

  17. chris92heel 03/11/2007 at 11:52 AM #

It’s time to focus on returning the heels to our rightful place atop the ACC. So with all sincerity, and from the bottom of my heart:

    Dook is puke
    Wake is fake
The team I grew up hating is NC State.

    GO TO HELL STATE!

  18. Rick 03/11/2007 at 11:59 AM #

If we can keep it close we will out execute UNC at the end.

We’re worthy of it, bring it on, we can take it! It’s GREAT to have that hate back!!!

[…] NC State’s Red Coat Revival continued on a night where Reynolds Coliseum was rocking, and the officiating was even more unstable as the ‘not-good-enough-for-the-Big-Dance’ zebras lost control of the game in the in the second half. In a season where NC State didn’t have a player called for a single technical foul, the YMCA referees from Hillsborough Street deemed it necessary to call two technicals on NC State players in the same game?!
