Drexel Game Thread (Last of the Season?)

Is this the way the season ends? Not with a bang (like the ACCT run), but a whimper (an injured, mentally and physically exhausted Pack squad playing out the string in front of a handful of fans)? Sadly, it seems likely, as this previous post explained. To clarify, I sure as hell hope we win, and will even make the trek to a sports bar in about an hour to watch on ESPN-Unavailable. But I won’t fault the staff or these kids in the slightest if we lose – even if we lose by 40.

Anyway, your in-game comments belong here. Let’s ride it out together!

8:12 update: I hate to say I told you so, but…

Halftime update: Really proud of the guys for hanging in and grinding it out. Drexel never met a shot they didn’t like, that’s for sure.

Damned near midnight update: Being wrong never felt so right! What incredible character. Go Marist!

In November, Marist beat Old Dominion and lost by nine to Arkansas.

    FWIW –
The NIT website shows our game as “Marist vs. N.C. State” while all the other confirmed 2nd round matchups are listed as “at” the higher seed.

Our game is listed is being on ESPNU at 9:30, but with another 2nd round game also on ESPNU at 9:00. One of the four games listed is on Saturday at noon, rather than Friday night, so there is some precedent of Saturday games.
If those listings (particularly the Friday night TV listings) are accurate, it might be possible to move the game to Saturday. If it is the sole game on a given network in its timeslot, probably no chance at all for a move.

Presumably, there is no posibility of using RBC at any point Sat-Mon, due to the NCAA women’s tournament.

The ESPNU game at 9pm is on Thursday, not Friday.

Just got home, longer drive from the game. STATE fans represented very well, about 10 to 20% of the seats were filled with RED. The couple next to me was there to support Horner, their daughter went to the prom with him last year. Horner had a large fan base there. Had to tell them how we thought highly of Dennis for honoring his commitment. The gentleman knew only of Dennis and a wide receiver he worked with at the Jets, Crotchery. Spoke highly of him.

Team was flat to start, picked it up and closed by half. The second half was as expected, STATE slowly realed them in and then took it in the last minutes.

I was glad to see the STATE fans control themselves, the Drexel fans were typical Philly fans (remember this is the group who threw snowballs at Santa Claus). The fans were upset they did not get into the NCAA, after this game, I do not think they really deserved it, they should have been able to put us away and keep it that way. Against any ACC team they would have hurt.

This team has a lot of heart, Atsur was hurting bad in the second half, a few times after steals he could barely run the floor.

After the game, I think the players appreciated the fans who made the trip. I think this team has the heart and drive to make it to Madison Garden.

    GO PACK

Yeah, the fans in front of “Horner’s Corner” were like the Cameron Crazies, I’m guessing all students trying to be obnoxious as possible.

Generally, I’ve come to respect Philly sports fans. Very passionate about their teams but just can’t live down anything and get stuck with a bad rap of being a “lunatic fringe” (the Santa Clause thing happened in the 1960’s).

The Drexel fans I was sitting next to were pretty nice to talk to and made some comments like, “give our guy an Oscar”, when someone drew a ticky-tack foul against our guys.

A lot of Horner’s family and friends made the trip down to Philadelphia for the game. From where I was sitting it seemed like 25% of NCSU fans at the game were somehow associated with Horner.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but someone put a link to some shots of the game (from a drexel person) up on ACCNow. There looked to be a not insignificant amount of pack fans there. Great job fans!

Thanks for the link ktpritch and great game report Gene! Glad you and wirogers were there to represent. Are you the same Gene who used to post at the Triangle forums?

    Gene and wirogers,

I was in the row in front of Horner’s Corner to the right. Sure was nice to hear the silence from the DU student section as soon as we took the lead. Agree with your assessment of the Pack fans. Most obnoxious comments from the DU students were ignored. Overall, a very enjoyable experience despite the lack of facilities (real food, bathrooms one floor down, and bleacher seating.)
