Drexel Game Thread (Last of the Season?)

Is this the way the season ends? Not with a bang (like the ACCT run), but a whimper (an injured, mentally and physically exhausted Pack squad playing out the string in front of a handful of fans)? Sadly, it seems likely, as this previous post explained. To clarify, I sure as hell hope we win, and will even make the trek to a sports bar in about an hour to watch on ESPN-Unavailable. But I won’t fault the staff or these kids in the slightest if we lose – even if we lose by 40.

Anyway, your in-game comments belong here. Let’s ride it out together!

8:12 update: I hate to say I told you so, but…

Halftime update: Really proud of the guys for hanging in and grinding it out. Drexel never met a shot they didn’t like, that’s for sure.

Damned near midnight update: Being wrong never felt so right! What incredible character. Go Marist!

A lot of ifs… but if Marist wins, do we really get a home game and would they play in Reynolds because of RBC non-availability?

If that comes to pass…. that would be way cool!

I could just see Sid on the sidelines in a Red Jacket while Jimmy and Norm, and Coach Case watch from really good seats.

I REALLY want to see this team play in Renyolds!!!!

  4. Karpaasi 03/13/2007 at 9:52 PM #

These guys are winners, and most importantly, Sid has them believing in themselves. Fatigue, nagging injuries and a close loss in the ACC tournament, and they still play to win…

    Priceless

    Marist up by 10!

  6. Tau837 03/13/2007 at 9:56 PM #

Announcers said 44% of Marist’s FG attempts are 3 pointers! Wow.

  7. branjawn 03/13/2007 at 9:58 PM #

    Marist by 12

Wow – this was win was as impressive as any this season. We beat a decent team, in a situation where we had every reason just to fold the tent and pee on the fire.

Great work by team, Sid and staff. He didn’t break it out, but this effort was definitely a red jacket effort tonight!

I THOUGHT that I wanted to play Marist before I watched them play. Now, I’m not sure why we would want Marist (other than the fact that we get a home game to have the chance to show the Wolfpack how much we love them)!

^^Not a good week to stop shooting up heroine.

I love the wolfpack. I love Sidney Lowe. I am re-excited about the NIT.

Hi guys, new here… i’ve read on the site for months now; just never registered…

just thought it was interesting WolfinVolcountry pointed that if Marist won we’d have a home game… there’s a concert at the RBC center but the gymnastics team will be occupying Reynolds at the same time. It presents an interesting situation.

  12. branjawn 03/13/2007 at 10:07 PM #

play at St Augs or Shaw!!! talk about home court advantage.

  13. Karpaasi 03/13/2007 at 10:09 PM #

Should Marist win, does anyone know where we buy tickets?

  14. justaguy 03/13/2007 at 10:10 PM #

    Halftime
    Marist 37 OK State 26

    Drexel 5-22 (22%) 3-Pt
    Marist 8-15 (53%) 3-Pt

If this continues, I hope we can defend the 3.

  15. Tau837 03/13/2007 at 10:10 PM #

Marist up 11 at half, with 8 3 pointers already. Wow. Still, it appears that we are a much better offensive team than Oklahoma State.

Also… possible rematch with West Virginia if we can win another game.

Went to the game. Some thoughts.

Playing in small gym got me the best seats I’ve ever had to a Wolfpack game and this includes center section student seating at Reynolds. Sat three rows up from courtside. Courtside was literally courtside. You could have a Larry David moment and trip a guy, if you wanted.

    Highlights for me:

Ticket window opened at 6:30 pm. Got there early to get my tickets. Mostly Wolfpack fans in line, at the time. One couple drove up from New Bern because they wanted to visit their daughter, who was living in Philadelphia, and see the game. Other guy, I was talking to had a business trip to the Phili suburbs, and got tickets, since he was in the area.

Walking around looking for a place to sit (open seating, except a section behind the team benches was reserved for season ticket holders) and the team was shooting around, kind of loose and looked very relaxed, saw Ferguson sitting on the bench and asked him how he liked NCSU. He cracked a big smile and said he was a having a great time.

Went to the bathroom, 10-15 minutes before the game, on the way out Pete Strickland and Monte Towe were walking in the opposite direction. Strickland taps me on the shoulder and says he likes the red of my NCSU shirt. Shook his and Monte’s hand and wished them luck. Monte didn’t say much, he just had a look on his face like he really needed to get where they were going (I’m guessing the lockeroom).

Sat next to an NCSU grad from Baltimore. After the game a guy in a Carolina T-Shirt, who was very upset Drexel lost, said to the little group of NCSU fans I was sitting around: “Carolina beat your ass”, and promptly walked away. Guess Wal-Mart sells crap in every state.

Great game. We missed some shots we usually make. Probably tired legs. The couple of foul calls in a row on Costner, with just under 3 minutes to play, made me scratch my head. I think they were calling falls for Costner looking at people funny, because he didn’t do anything.

A bit of an ego trip for me: I was sitting closer to the goal we were defending in the second half. When Drexel was shooting FT’s I was hollering as loud as I could and the guy next to me was doing the same. I always wonder how loud I am, at times like this, and if guys on the court can here (i.e. was I bothering the Drexel guy shooting FT’s). Towards the end of the game a lady about 5-10 feet from me asks me not to yell so old, because I was bothering her hearing. Whatever FT’s Drexel missed towards the end of the game, I’d like to think I helped.

Maybe ECU would loan us Mingis if Reynolds and RBC aren’t available. ha ha

  18. Gene 03/13/2007 at 10:19 PM #

EDIT: not to yell so loud

Gene, STELLAR post man. Thanks for the report. Excellent.

When I was in school (when basketball meant Reynolds) all the gymnastics meets except the one big invitational were held on the top floor of Charmichael gym. (Same room where the rock-climbing wall is.) I sure hope they could move a dual match against Pitt in there to accomodate a basketball home game. Reynolds would be the perfect setting for this – I don’t think the NIT, on the first Friday of the NCAA tournament, could fill RBC.

I was a couple rows from the floor along the North baseline for the NIT game against WVa in ’97 at Reynolds, and it was amazing. This was the second round, but the first had been played during spring break so the first one most students could get to. The place was completely packed – it was like everyone had to show how much they appreciated what had happened the previous weekend at the ACC tournament. The last minute was unreal – WVa had the lead and kept making foul shots, but we would come down and hit a three to get one point closer. The last exchange left us down by three with ~5 seconds left, and we had a pretty good look to tie that didn’t go down at the buzzer. Place would’ve exploded if it had gone in, but there was a huge ovation for what they had done the last month of the season anyway. These guys deserve at least one more of those.

I actually knew about the gymnastics thing cause i have the coach for a PE class right now..and there’s only one bleacher in that room so it that wouldn’t be possible since they usually have somewhere between 2500 to 4000 ppl at the meets now days…but hey, we can all hope

  22. Tau837 03/13/2007 at 10:30 PM #

    Marist up 17

  23. StateFans 03/13/2007 at 10:31 PM #

If Raleigh still had a convention center, then the gymnastics could have been moved there.

You have to wonder if you can move the gymnastics to St Marys or Peace or Meredith or Broughton or Cardinal Gibbons?

Text below (not archived, so still free to all:

“(Note: Don’t even get me started about barely .500 NC State team winning three games in three days and turning themselves into a legitimate Cinderella story before running out of gas in the ACC finals against North Carolina. Four games in four days? That’s acceptable? Why not stagger the games on Wednesday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday? I feel like NC State could have taken UNC if the Wolfpack weren’t dead in the first half. More importantly, we were robbed of a chance to see Sidney Lowe unleash his gigantic red sports coat on March Madness. Did he borrow that thing from Suge Knight or Cedric the Entertainer?)

Most annoying story: Tyler Hansbrough’s broken-nose mask (or as I like to call it, “the Schnozzaroo”). Not even Jennifer Aniston’s nose got this much attention in 2007.

Funniest exit stage right: To Duke for losing to NC State in the ACC quarterfinals … and legitimately, I might add. Nice work, fellas. I can’t wait to see Coach K fighting back tears during the tail end of the inevitable VCU loss on Thursday after Eric Maynor strips Greg Paulus for the game-clinching layup. It’s gonna be great. I’m already giddy. ”

    Sorry for not providing, Captain…
