Fred, I gotta agree. Watched this game for too many years to think we can win them all, but I’ve also watched the last 20 years and wondered if we’d ever win another. Now I know we can!

Nobody can win them all. I am certainly not going to cry over living through a war with a far superior group of players and coming up a little short. Especially when we could walk away with dignity and our chins held high, knowing we pushed them to their limit.

choppack, why would you say you hope Costner and Grant are back? I guess with Grant you might be referring to his citizenship issue… but why Costner? If you are referring to going pro, no chance. Yes, he was a dominant player at times for us, but he is not NBA ready by a long shot. I expect him to be here at least two more seasons.

Tau – He has much better #s than Simmons or Powell did – and unlike those 2, he’s had an injury.

Down 8 at half I thought we had spent our last. Down 16 I knew we had. I think this team showed more heart and more determination than any I can remember. I hope they don’t regret signing on for a meaningless tournament starting in less than 48 hours.

Great ride. I too echo Beo’s comments about moral victories and being close, but no cigar. I’ll feel better tomorrow, but right now I am very proud of this team and very disappointed at the outcome of today’s game. We don’t get much rest going to Philly, but it is a game we can win. Maybe we’ll get a home game out of this soon.
    Go Pack!

    chop-

Powell went undrafted didn’t he? Can’t remember, but I think his decision arguably cost him money.

Simmons was a late first rounder… and a center, which is a position that due to scarcity ranks players with potential higher on draft boards… and at the time he declared was being discussed as a potential lottery pick, which didn’t happen. Forward is more crowded, and no one has mentioned Costner as a potential lottery pick, with good reason.

Costner is not overly quick and is not a great leaper. Both of these contribute to the number of times he is blocked and/or has trouble getting off his shot in close. IMO he is the epitome of a player that will have to make up for some relative athletic deficiencies with better skills (he has those but they can still get better), experience, and maturity. I expect him to stay at least 2 more seasons.

It’s probably also true that if you put Powell or Simmons on this year’s team they would have had better numbers than they did under Herb, so I think you’re comparing apples and oranges. The NBA scouts look at the player much more so than the numbers.

Anyway, I love Costner as a player, so I hope I’m right and he’ll be around for a while.

Someone with more time and resourcefulness than I do please do an analysis of who the voters are for the ACC tourney team, and what their alma maters are. That would prove or disprove the UNC School of Journalism conspiracy theory for good (I only wish).

“Sid is not afraid to say EXACTLY what the goals are. They went to Tampa to win the whole thing. Not to “play well” or “compete”, but to win. I love that.”

So do I, but the shocking thing is, this is what many did not like, even made fun of Chuck for.

    More or less random thoughts:

To me, the key to the game was that approx. 45 seconds at the end of the first half when we lost Miller twice in transition.

Biggest surprise of the game – that Williams did not go for more full court pressure that he did. Expected to see that for all 40, especially since we weren’t really hurting them when they did apply it.

Best coaching move of game – when Sid and staff realized the pick and roll wasn’t happening and changed the offense to mostly postup isolations. Some people (nameless of course) would have kept doing the same thing until we were down by 30.

Most of you probably know this already by now, but Costner’s 90 points was an NC State tournament record, not a conference one. Tied DT (3 games) and CC Harrison (4 games) And yes, they did a lousy job of making that clear.

Best post game quote – Ben McCauley – “This is the way NC State basketball will be played from now on.”

THought I’d share this – I was talking with a buddy today that is a huge Clemson fan. He asked me “which pissed you off more – Lawson’s last second dunk or Costner getting the MVP shaft?”

He said he was following a Clemson baseball game on line, and the Clemson discussion board lit up with Tiger fans going off on how “tasteless” it was of Lawson to pull that stunt. He even went so far as Roy’s tolerance of such late-game showboating is why things like Hansbro’s broken nose happened. Allow your team to disrespect a foe at the end of the game, and sooner or later someone will decide not to put up with it. Again – that was his opinion (I still think Henderon’s elbow was unintentional, but he did intend to foul him to stop the shot).

Yeah, I know it’s old news, but I did want to point out that it isn’t just Pack fans that think we got a double dose of disrespect.

I didn’t know a single Pack fan who MADE FUN OF Chuck or didn’t like him for wanting to win the ACC.

The media, yes. But they would swoon over any UNX coach who said the same thing.

Lawson’s dunk to me was basically a non event. Gotta remember he’s not much more than a kid and probably couldn’t fulfill the academic requirements to play next year anyway without “some assistance”. Let him go on the the NBA, fall on his face, or better yet, let a Detroit goon put his face into the 15th row when he tries that crap there.
