The two empty possessions inside the 3:00 mark when the Holes were only up 3 is where we had our chance. The play of Dennis Horner the past two games bodes well for the future. Winning some games in the NIT and getting to NYC would be sweet. I’m very disappointed in the result, but not in the effort put forth today by the pack. Sidney must be able to recruit to compete on a consistent basis in this league. We will know about that in a year or two. He can clearly flat out coach in game situations.

Beo – we played our asses off today. Carolina showed alot of heart to fight back. It wasn’t their “A game” b/c Hansbrough was useless offensively except for FTs. It seemed like he was less of a rebounder, too.

“Sidney must be able to recruit to compete on a consistent basis in this league.”

Not to argue on a great day but…SAY WHAT? Are you seriously saying we had the horsepower to really compete today? I am telling you as I’ve said before, only BAD coaches have to be able to recruit the creme de la creme year in and year out. Great coaches coach TEAMS, not players.

Surprised there hasn’t been any conversation here about when the PACK arrives home later today and having a welcoming home celebration for a tremendous gutty performance…………………

    Anyone know any details?

Yeah red, and the ride ain’t over yet.

I have no hope at 18-15 that we get to the dance. But the NIT is seeing dollar signs in Wolfpack red, with how well our folks filled out thr Tampa arena. I was disappointed to be sure, but UNC played a great game, and our team showed unbelievable heart to keep it close until a minute left!.

We should be proud State fans today. There is no shame in how well our school was represented this weekend. Classy and fiery. 80 points on what had to be dead legs, and knowing full well there is no margin for error.

Now we (hopefully) get a chance to win a different tournament, and some more practices to build for next year. I only hope the emotion of this whole thing doesn’t resonate more than a day or so.

BJD, I heartily disagree; UNC most definitely played its A game today. A few slip-ups would’ve been nice. As for Tyler, all he had to do was get the ball inside and he was guaranteed a trip to the FT line, where he was perfect.

Was anyone a little disgusted by hearing all the praise for how Tyler is so “tough” when no acknowledgment was made whatsoever that the opposing team featured one kid who’d also had his nose broke during ACC play and another — the kid scoring 28 pts, btw — who’s just two weeks removed from having teeth knocked out in ACC play?

Jeez, guys, just think and think real hard! No matter how disappointed we were today that at this time last year, even taking into consideration that we were going to the NCAA’s, that we(“the Lunatic Fringe”) had no hope, no future(other than Fowler’s), and were sincerely trying to find ourselves.

With this season, brings a new hope, a renewed enthusiasm, and a knowledge that, “WE ARE THE RED FROM NC STATE AND WE KNOW WE ARE THE BEST, DUKE AND HEELS STAND IN LINE, WE’LL TAKE ON ALL THE REST, WE’RE THE RED AND WHITE FROM NC STATE AND WE KNOW WE ARE THE BEST”!

Damn, you don’t know how good that sounds and really believe in the future!

The tourney run has afforded Coach Lowe and his staff some more ACC experience. Our returning players, which is sustantial, also stand to gain from the experience. That said, while it would be nice to get the title (in what would have gone down in ACC folklore as the “David vs. Goliath” moment), we still need to keep looking ahead. The goal has got to be a realistic shot of playing for ACC tiltles on a consistent basis.

This team swung for the fences and came up just a bit short. In the long run I hope the attitude and outstanding toughness they displayed provide an example for future squads under Coach Lowe (so he doesn’t have to always point to his playing days). We had nothing to lose and everything to gain this time around, and we maximized on just about everything.

It was great to see Denis Horner play with such fire and confidence. For all that happened in the off season getting Coach Lowe and having Horner honor his commitment to NC State are two things that were very positive from the outset. Obviously, besides the loss, there are many more things to point to as indications that things are on the upswing in Raleigh.

Finally, it’s nice to watch the games and feel the excitment all while knowing that the program is headed in the right direction. It’s easier to say WTNY when you don’t have to hear the phrase “honor the process”.

    beo

In all honesty, I thought we should have contested, but let bug eyes shoot down low. I don’t really know what his FT percentages are, but every game I’ve seen him play he has been exceptional from the stripe.

Which announcer said “Whenever the play involves Hansbrough, there is always going to be contact.”

    NO SHIT

Regarding UNC’s losses after the season, I expect Wright to leave early and obviously Terry and Miller are seniors. Honestly, I don’t think Miller’s loss will hurt a bit, but the other two were starters, so that should help.

Personally, I doubt Hansbrough or Lawson will leave. Neither would be a definite first round pick at this point IMO. If one or both do leave, so much the better, but I’d be surprised. Unfortunately, I think they would be harder for UNC to replace than Wright, Terry, and Miller.

That said, we played toe to toe with them this season for 2 1/2 games. Next year, we will have more talent and depth, and Sidney will have a year of college coaching under his belt. I like our chances.

  11. beowolf 03/11/2007 at 5:22 PM #

Don’t know what any of you are reading from me, but chalk it up to what Lowe said about feeling hurt but not disappointed.

You’re not a fan if losing a title game doesn’t hurt. Especially when the loss is to your archrival. Moral victories be damned. I agree with Lombardi’s philosophy “Show me a ‘good loser’ and I’ll show you a loser.” If being a “good loser” means not allowing a loss to hurt, that’s just unnatural.

But am I disappointed? Hell no. Like I said above, we gave them much more of a game that I expected. We’d played as well as we could have, all things considered. I don’t know much more of what they could have done other than the inhuman feat of never missing a shot nor making a bad pass.

This season — as far as my pre-season (and in-season) expectations and hopes were concerned — were met IN FULL when we defeated Duke on Thursday. We’d had a winning season — CHECK. We’d finished out of the ACC basement despite the unanimous opinion we’d be there — CHECK. We’d played smart basketball that got us excited about the future — CHECK. We stayed out of off-court embarrassments — CHECK.

Then the clinchers, the “hopes met” part: We played well against our rivals — CHECK. We beat Duke — CHECK. We beat Carolina — CHECK.

Hopes unmet were the “unreasonable”/wildest dreams ones of qualifying for the NCAA and winning the freaking ACCT.

I concur with beowulf also, I surely didn’t see it, but if the powder blue didn’t seem be to clicking on all cylinders it was because we had them off balance and were limiting them offensively. Gotta give them credit though, they made some unreal clutch shots throughout the game that probably don’t normally fall.

We had two questionable late possessions where we settled for one on one plays instead of going inside, to be topped off with the foul call on the McCauley/Ginyard blocked shot, which may have been too late anyway, that was the difference in it going all the way down to the wire.

I would have to say that man for man, the WOLFPACK out did the heWels today. That includes the coach.

  13. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 5:34 PM #

Maryland as a four and Va Tech as a five?

    Isn’t that a bit high?>

  14. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 5:37 PM #

    Duke a sixth and GT a 10th

  15. justaguy 03/11/2007 at 5:37 PM #

“Raycom is the absolute worst. Chimps in suits could have created a better telecast.”

Is it just me or does Mike Hogwood look like Chris Farley’s “Matt Foley, motivational speaker”? He looks like he’s been livin’ in a van down by the river.

Did anyone notice that after the game the Carolina fans were not even excited?

Which is why I fucking hate Carolina. They are such smug god damn bastards. Yeah, I have friends and family, who went to Carolina, but as fans, they’re smug bastards and I can’t stand ’em.

If you can’t enjoy watching kids change and develop, both physically and MENTALLY, over the course of a season without having always having a check in the win column,

redfred2, the best years I’ve witnessed as a Wolfpack fan are under Herb Sendek. I felt, 10 years ago, after a gutsy, tough performance, by a very undermanned team, that we could be dangerous if we got some better players.

It didn’t pan out. I’m tired of MORAL VICTORIES.

I want a banner. No one remembers the also-rans.

The Houston Cougars went to 5 NCAA Final Fours, from the late 1960’s to early 1980’s, produced a boat load of NBA players and (I think) three Hall of Famers – Elvin Hayes, Olijouwan, and Drexler. No one remembers them as a great program. They remember US BEATING THEM in 1983.

If MORAL VICTORIES were acceptable we’d all be happy puppies, with Herb still coaching.

I’m tired of thinking, “wait till next year”. We don’t know what next year will bring.

The only consolation I take from this loss is Wake Forest is fourth all time in ACC Tourney titles with four total. So we’re safely in 3rd place in that catagory.

Duke gets a higher seed (6) than BC(7)? typical. it’s all those coach K commercials:
“My players elbow people in the face, and my card is American Express”
    -from the jim rome show.

  18. Astral Rain 03/11/2007 at 5:47 PM #

BC had the suspension issue which likely knocked down their seed.

Be nice if they goofed and NCSU ended up a 12 seed in the last bracket, but not gonna happen

  19. Packaholic1 03/11/2007 at 5:50 PM #

Good job team. But for a few blown calls by the refs, we would have taken it.

  20. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 5:52 PM #

No FSU or Clemson. Are we going to make the NIT?

  21. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 5:53 PM #

    UVA a 4th seed?

I don’t see the acc doing very well if we are essentially better than some of these high seeds.

  22. beowolf 03/11/2007 at 5:54 PM #

    I forgot to add:

We made every last one of those media pukes kicking sand in our faces back in April choke on their words about us not being able to compete with Roy and K — CHECK.

  23. beowolf 03/11/2007 at 5:56 PM #

Mr. O, no way we don’t make the NIT. I don’t care if Dean Smith IS on their selection committee, there is NO WAY they could justify overlooking us.

  24. MrPlywood 03/11/2007 at 5:58 PM #

Carolina is on notice. So is Duke. Wake is already playing catchup. State owns VT. Things are looking good. The next step is maintaining focus in all the ACC games, and win the winnable – Miami, GT (up 8 at the half) etc.

I agree with Redfred – even with the ups and downs of the rollercoaster regular season, this has been a mesmerizing story. Sid is not afraid to say EXACTLY what the goals are. They went to Tampa to win the whole thing. Not to “play well” or “compete”, but to win. I love that.

  25. justaguy 03/11/2007 at 6:07 PM #

Saragin’s computer rankings have been updated. As a result, State is now #75. That’s up 4 places even with the loss, and up 20 places since Wednesday.

If the NIT knows basketball, NC State is easily in. If they don’t, then they surely understand $$$, and State is in.
