AP: Lowe thanks Wolfpack officals, fans for support

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe thanked Wolfpack officials and fans for their understanding Wednesday after his son was charged with crimes ranging from armed robbery to drug possession.

“This is a difficult time for my son, myself and my family,” Lowe said in a statement issued by the school. “We appreciate the support and understanding of the Wolfpack family.”

“We understand what a difficult time this must be for the Lowe family,” N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler said. “I have spoken with Sidney and assured him that we support our coach and will do what we can for him and his family as they deal with this situation.”

I agree Carnife.. this does seem to be handled a little better than most NCSU ‘scandals’. Sid has been right out front and center on this issue and has stood tall beside his son and even waved to reporters at one point.

lots of potheads in this thread….not that theres anything wrong with that

The drug charges are the least of his worries. Since the Martin guy is charged with attempted murder, and Lowe is not, maybe Lowe can plea-bargain his felony aiding and abetting charges down if he helps the prosecution with the case against Martin. I went to UNCG after NCSU, and got into some trouble with the law there (minor compared to this – a misdemeanor charge). I have full faith that Lowe’s attorney – Clifford – can get Lowe the best results possible. There’s not a Nifong in Guilford County. Unfortunately, my experience with the Guilford county courts took quite some time. My lawyer kept delaying my case until he got the judge that was his friend to preside over my case – and that took almost a year. Let’s not think about what that could mean in this case…

Keep in mind that ESPN has become damn near useless in anything except when they televise a game. Remember this is the network that loves to talk about “what’s wrong in sports” while protecting schools like So. Cal or Notre Dame when they are in trouble and never forget every Sunday of the NFL season they have no problem kissing up to a murderer like Ray Lewis. So when looking at what they have to say about NCSU and other schools keep that in mind and hit the mute button…especially as Lou Holtz talks about doing thing the right way…..jeez!

I would never defend the UNC bottom-feeder faction …. yuck, ptui. But everyone of you guys here know how your own bottom-feeders would be reacting if it was a UNC coaches’ family in a similar situation ….. which, of course, it easily could be.

Remember the Partisan Marijuana Rule …. no amount is “large enough to matter” if its YOUR guy getting busted. No amount is “too small to matter” if its THEIR guy getting busted. Marijuana is “no big deal” when its YOUR guy …… Marijuana is “get a rope” when its THEIR guy.

Lets hope El Sid has some really good crisis managers advising him on this one. It sounds pretty messy so far. Of course, so did the first week of Duyke Lacrosse too.

    Prayers to the Lowe family.

The 45 year old in me says obviously, Sid Jr. not thinking straight. What the heck was he doing there.

The 20 year old in me says – whew, I’m glad that didn’t happen to me when I was somewhere I shouldn’t have been.

So, you guys that are 20ish – take it from an old fart – just don’t put yourself in this kind of situation. It can flat out ruin you. Unfortunately, innocent until proven guilty yada yada yada – Lowe Jr’s name is mud, unfortunately.

When I went into the office today, the first thing I got was how Sidney and I might want to trade in our red coats for ones with orange stripes.

Sorta justifies my elation that they got their butts whipped by Georgetown. Hope the whole team goes pro!

You guys are making some very good points. I had some issues with my son when he was growing up because he had the unlucky habit of always getting caught! I explained to him one time that he was not doing anything worse than I did when I was growing up, but that he got caught everytime. Maybe if your luck is so bad, you should’t put yourself in those situations! I think a little of that sunk in and he’s turned out to be a fine young gentlemen, but he could have really been in some deep crap if he’d been caught by some less understanding folks at the time. I guess it’s the proverbial feeling of being “bulletproof” at that age and just not thinking.

I realize this thread has about run its course so what I’m going to say will not be read by too many ….. which is OK. I’ll repeat it “the next time”.

Many of you are commenting about the garbage being said about this mess by Carolina human hairballs on the UNC “boards”. It is despicable, inexcusable and …. almost verbatim what your bottom feeder bunch would say if it was a reverse situation.

Exact same mess as this …. but with a high profile UNC sports figure in Sid’s situation ….. 50% of the posters here (and this is a “upscale” crowd!) would be hooting and hollering with all the usual insults …. 40% of you would be silent but grinning like cheshire cats at the garbage YOUR FANS were posting ….. 10% of you MIGHT be thinking “I’m embarrassed that our fans would be taking these cheap shots”.

Until that 10% in either fan base ever gets to 30-50% nothing will improve in the civility of the rivalry. Nothing WILL change until each fan base starts policing its own by moderators zapping the toxic crap from their own. Tell your moderators you are embarrassed by the crap being posted by your own fans …. IF you are. No board wants to lose good solid adult fans. No moderator or board owner wants a septic tank for a website.

Same logic applies for UNC boards but only their owners can clean them up.

I’m sure most of you saw the racist crap posted on that student run website after Ty Lawson’s dunk in the ACC finals. Whether those were your fans or rivals pretending to be Wuffs …. it was on a NCSU sports site and reflected on each one of you. …… of course, if you really don’t want any civility in the rivalry, just do nothing …… and it will get worse.

    Two points:

    – It has been reported that the WolfWeb thread was an exercise in just how over the top they could be. Having seen the thread, I can buy that. Not to say that some were not joking.

    – When the media reports events *over yondah* to the extent they report them *over heah*, then I think it will be “the same only reversed”.

I actually had a professor who worked for the NC dept of revenue… he brought in some Unauthorized Substance tax stamps to class one day… it was pretty cool.. the cocaine stamp had a grim reaper on it… some of the others were kinda plain…. here’s the going tax rate for everything… http://www.dornc.com/taxes/usub/usubrates.html

This is looking very bad for Lowe Jr. Based on what the DA said in the N&O today, if convicted, he could wind up with a MINIMUM of 7 years in the slammer. If it was only 1 incident I could buy that he was an innocent bystander (as his grandfather claims) and didn’t know what was going on. But first a home invasion and now a shooting? And both occurred with the same accomplice/friend. Maybe he didn’t know what was going on the first time, but it’s hard to find a rational excuse for the second.

Paper today offers some defense for the kid. Just hanging with the wrong guy at the wrong time. More a victim of cicumstance. Although he has some drug issues that are about the same as 30-50% (or more) of most college kids today.

“I’m sure most of you saw the racist crap posted on that student run website after Ty Lawson’s dunk in the ACC finals. Why don’t you tell us what we shoudl do?
Other than controlling what is posted on this board there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about what idiots post on an open board. Nothing.
And for you to imply there is anything NCSU fans in general can do about it is shallow thinking.

  15. BobLee 03/29/2007 at 12:01 PM #

Easy answer ….. there is no such thing as an “open board”. SOMEBODY is the webmaster / moderator. Set “standards” and stick to them.

The old line about defining “pornography” … “I know it when I see it”. There might be a “gray area” where folks might disagree but for the really toxic stuff we all know it. The Ty Lawson crap …. and a LOT of crap that UNC idiots were posting after the Henderson-Hansbrough incident.

So …. IF you want to have a “civil board” then somebody has the “zapper” and runs a tight ship. Yes, it will p*ss off a few nutjobs that get their kicks saying f*** and saying outlandish garbage about high profile figures and/or groups they hate ….. but losing that segment from a board community is addition thru subtraction.

Yes …. barring wholesale legislation of the Internet …. the nutjobs can always start their own septic tank-sites but they won’t have any legitimacy and will quickly die out. A lot of the current problems lies with Scout and Rivals who apparently like the level of flatulence they permit. A 15 y/o punk is equal to a 40 y/o engineer to their coffers.

IF (a big IF) enough mainstream fans demand a more civil board, they will get it.

Or…you know…just accept that dumbasses post things on the Internet. It is no reflection on me when one of these dumbasses posts racist sentiments on ANOTHER board. I don’t think any less of Bob Lee Swagger (the man or the myth) because a couple of morons in light blue (helllooooo Eddy Landreth!) tar with the broadest possible brush.

  17. BobLee 03/29/2007 at 1:10 PM #

Noah, You don’t like Eddddddy ???? You and I agree on that one.

Eddddy is the patron saint of Caro-Loonies. The Light blue goggle-eyed crowd hangs on his every word. That he actually has a by-line in a supposedly legitimate media source speaks to the state of the print media.

  18. Rick 03/29/2007 at 1:27 PM #

You have still not answered the question about what I (or anyone on this board) can do about an idiot on another board.
You have said we should do something but have not answered what we can possibly do.

  19. BobLee 03/29/2007 at 1:48 PM #

On “another board” …. I assume you mean that student-run site. Nothing other than find out exactly who it is running it and “persuade” them that providing an outlet for idiots to vent under the guise of “State fans” does indeed reflect on all State fans ….. F-Bomb Alley reflected on “State fans” whether anyone here was involved or not. It all plays to the “image” of the fan-base.

All a single board community can really control is their own community. This one has, since its inception, been THE most civil/adult forum among all of the State fan boards. With the exception of the occasional “hot topic” I’d say its the most (only) civil board among both NCSU and UNC public boards. Ergo, why its the ONLY fan board I ever post on ….. duh!

Every fan base looks for the worst examples of their rivals and touts it as “see, they’re ALL a buncha ….”. As SFN posters all you can do is say “that sort of crap doesn’t exist on our board” and be sure it doesn’t.

Hell, form a vigilante posse and go “clean up the neighborhood”. That WRAL story on the “racist crap” simply said “a NC State fan board” so, yes, it implicated this board by doing so.

But, if, like Noah, you don’t care about your bad apples then it is a moot point. Cleaning up the crap does NOT mean taking the FUN out of a rivalry … just elevating the IQ level of the dialogue.

  20. Rick 03/29/2007 at 2:21 PM #

I do not care because I assume everyoen knows there are morons out there.
I jut wanted to know why you thought it was our duty to do somethign about it.
I will keep on patroling this board. It is all I can or want to do.

  21. noah 03/29/2007 at 3:13 PM #

A handful of people acting like monkeys flinging their excrement against the cage no longer bothers me.

Maybe I should have higher standards. I still remember Lloyd Daniels getting busted in a Vegas crackhouse and going to his first appearance with an NC State hat on his head.

    D’ohhh!

After that, I realized that these things were not in my control.

  22. noah 03/29/2007 at 3:16 PM #

BTW, I take issue with the use of the phrase “Bad Apples.”

“A bad apple can spoil the bunch” is, I think, the saying. In other words, one “bad apple” can affect the group. But that’s not the case here.

We are not a collective. We are a series of individuals connected only by a server. In reality, we are seperated physically by (in some case) thousands of miles.

So…to pick a nit…the “bad apple” metaphor does not apply.

  23. BobLee 03/29/2007 at 3:21 PM #

Its not your duty ….. and since you don’t care, then idiots will continue to post on this board and others …… actually I am predicting that before much longer the toxic fumes from some boards will get to some marginal psycho and an unfortunate incident will occur with a coach, player, admin etc. On the UNC boards, keep reading that Coach K is “a demon” and some moon bat is going to play Don Quixote and try to rid society of such an evil. No one fanbase has an exclusive on sickos.

if I don’t care if my lawn isn’t cut then I don’t cut it. If it might bother my neighbors, thats their problem. Or “keep 60 sheep in a house in Apex” …. YIKES!

If inmates run the fan asylums then so be it ….. but, selfishly, as long as there are goggle-eyed nutjobs with barely a toe in the reality pool I will never run out of column fodder.

As I said 3-4 posts up …. nothing changes until enough members of a community want/demand change. I’d say thats not likely here, if indeed it need be. ………. this has been a very interesting dialogue.

  24. BobLee 03/29/2007 at 3:31 PM #

The “bad apple” metaphor ……. now we’re getting into cyber-semantics.

I don’t care where you are geographically …. if I click “here” and find you then “here” you are. And SOMEONE has the power to allow/delete anything posted here. And that person chooses to be very lax and essentially allow anything then its his decision …. consciously or otherwise. To not delete is to delete not! …… I, or anyone, can be blocked from participating here …. so a technical control system does exist.

anyone coming in here has reason to assume it is a gathering of NC State sports fans and will make their assumptions about NC State fans from this assemblage of posters …… “blind men and the elephant”.

AGAIN …. this forum is very far from a toxic dump ….. as I’ve said at least four times. We are talking about fan forums in general within a fan base.

  25. noah 03/29/2007 at 4:20 PM #

    Bahhh….that’s your problem. 😉
