AP: Lowe thanks Wolfpack officals, fans for support

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe thanked Wolfpack officials and fans for their understanding Wednesday after his son was charged with crimes ranging from armed robbery to drug possession.

“This is a difficult time for my son, myself and my family,” Lowe said in a statement issued by the school. “We appreciate the support and understanding of the Wolfpack family.”

“We understand what a difficult time this must be for the Lowe family,” N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler said. “I have spoken with Sidney and assured him that we support our coach and will do what we can for him and his family as they deal with this situation.”

The cool older hippie dude down the street will not sell you a pound of sugar, let alone pot…unless he thinks the DEA are already in the helicopters on their way to his house. If you go ask him for a pound, he’s going to think you’re the worst snitch on the planet.

A pound of marijuana comes off the back of a truck that Nate Newton drove in from Mexico. And it usually has a couple of hundred other pounds sitting right next to it. And it’s not bud, it’s brick. Which means that it’s junk.

Do dealers still use those little scales that fold up and you can hang off the edge of a desk? Or do they use the digital postal scales?

Don’t read any of the free UNC boards then. There are some extraordinarily tasteless comments there.

    they use diggies

  9. lush 03/28/2007 at 3:52 PM #

if i were in the market, then i would only trust the digi’s, highschool kids and garbage peddlers use hanging scales.

It’s not just the weight that goes towards the “intent to sell” – it is also whether it is all in one bag or in multiple bags. After all, if the ounce was personal use, why would you have four quarter bags? Having a set of scales will also do you in.

    …or so I have been told 🙂

Well no surprise that any Duke or unx fan would think that boosters, alumni, and admins at NCSU should get rid of Sid because of something his adult child, who didn’t live at home, didn’t go to NCSU, and lived out of town did.
That tells me its time to give him an extension if out rivals are that concerned.
And I don’t understand the drug selling or buying business however I would think that out of 22 felonies that some will stick (obviously others won’t).

just a little tidbit for everyone, did you know that you have to pay tax on any gonja that the police catch you with? i think it is something ridiculous like $1 a gram but i could be way off. anyway, so not only do you lose the value of whatever was confiscated, but then you have to pay them for taking it from you! ive never understood this

  14. PackBacker001 03/28/2007 at 4:10 PM #

Wait, why did that show up at 4:09? It’s 4:52…

I feel proud I know more about the taxation side of the drug business than anything else. If you’re selling drugs you’re making income, so of course the gov’t wants to tax you. In reality it’s the easiest way to nail drug dealers. A lot of arch-criminals who get off for everything else get convicted of tax evasion from their ill-earned profits. Also, in another nifty loophole designed to hit these guys harder, you can’t deduct your illegal expenses. So if you buy a can-opener for $20 and sell it for $30 you owe taxes on $10, but if you buy pot for $20 and sell it for $30 you owe taxes on the whole $30, because you can’t deduct the cost of buying illegal drugs.

alright, so… I got caught with a “crumb” of weed and a roach in a car once. What do you think I owe the IRS?!?!

just wanna make sure I get that taken care of before I get audited!!!

    ; )

what if you grow it for personel use and no money exchanges hands?

  18. lush 03/28/2007 at 4:23 PM #

maybe they only tax large amounts, amounts they consider intent to sell

  19. RedTerror29 03/28/2007 at 4:26 PM #

The “hobby” versus business rules may apply, and there may be a property tax element as well. I’m not sure…there was a reason I chose to pursue neither a career in tax or law.

  20. PackBacker001 03/28/2007 at 4:30 PM #

    ^ Or a career in drug-dealing.

RT – how do you prove the income?

  22. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/28/2007 at 4:46 PM #

“I wonder what other topics would cause discussion about prayer and buying weed in the same thread??”

These two subjects are actually complimentary.

  23. chris92heel 03/28/2007 at 4:48 PM #

Lots of bad news for State and UNC recently. Hope for the best for this kid.

  24. RedTerror29 03/28/2007 at 4:56 PM #

“RT – how do you prove the income?”

Not sure, but I do know the IRS has very elaborate ways to estimate income for all sorts of industries, e.g. estimations for a pizza joint based on ingredient costs. So I imagine they have some way to estimate. Actually proving there was income isn’t hard. The question is how much, but that’s not a big deal.

Of course, if the drug dealer keeps good books it makes things a lot easier. There was a sociology doctoral student who wrote a very illuminating paper on the business side of running a gang after he got ahold of a well-kept gang ledger (see Freakonomics).
