ACCNow: ‘You tell me which had more passion?’

Our NC State vs Marist post-game entry is a fantastic one that is full of great current and historical comments. Click here to check it out.

At the bottom of the entry we took the time to update some links to major media outlets that recapped the evening’s events. One of the links was to an entry at ACCNow that deserved to be bronzed, let alone elevated to its own entry here at SFN.

It is a thing of beauty, and I’d like to personally thank the team at the N&O for putting it together.

The NIT’s not supposed to matter, the Not Important Tournament. Try telling that to N.C. State — its fans or its coach.

The Wolfpack returned one more time to Reynolds Coliseum on Friday night for a second-round game with Marist. The Old Barn was jammed. It was loud and State won. Just like when Sidney Lowe played at State.

When you listen to Lowe, who was coaching in the NBA when N.C. State moved from the on-campus facility to the State Fairgrounds in 1999, you can hear the preference in his voice for where his team should call home.

“There’s a difference when you have your place,” Lowe said without mentioning where N.C. State played all but one of its home games this season.

“It’s Reynolds,” Lowe said. “It’s all where it happened for me. Anyone that’s played in the ACC and played in this building against N.C. State, they’ll tell you it’s one of the toughest places to play in the country. It’s crazy in here.”

Crazy, and this for an NIT game. A tournament, on Friday and in this corner of the world, that mattered almost as much as the other one. It did for an N.C. State fan base that somehow had been accused of running the previous coach out of town. Eight thousand fans show up for an NIT game at 9:30. You tell me which had more passion — the previous coach or these fans?

There’s no doubt those fans are in the first full-fledged stages of love with Lowe, who has rallied a team that went 5-11 in the ACC to the championship game of the ACC Tournament and a 20-win season, thanks to two more in the NIT.

And to whom did Lowe, who, you know, did the actual coaching, give the credit to?

“The atmosphere showed tonight, without our crowd, this would have been a tough one,” Lowe said. “It was a tough game as it was but I think our crowd kept us in it.”

Rochester makes a great point on the naysayers…Heck – Barnes almost took the job. I think the only reason Cal didn’t come here was because we wanted him to recruit guys who weren’t going to embarass us on a regular basis.

On a side note, Lon Kruger’s Rebels are doing pretty well this year.

I can say this- there is more positive press regarding Sid, the jacket, and our story then I’ve ever seen anywhere else. The last time I saw this much positive press was after destroying ND in the Gator Bowl.

The one “concern” I have is that next year we make progress but it’s considered a letdown. I’m upfront in that I’m expecting 8-8 in-conference and an NCAA bid to be what determines a successful season next year.

I saw given the past few years I spent in SC what back-to-back NIT titles do (and there’s no guarantee of that of course)- and that is jack squat.

On a totally unrelated note, Tyler Hansboro is Annakin Skywalker w/out the mullet.

    >>>We were vilified… ridiculed… mocked… for having expectations and passion.

  5. shellnc 03/17/2007 at 11:27 PM #

People like Joe don’t want us talking about Herb because we were right and they were wrong and it’s a little bit of a hit on their ego. . Maybe if they would admit that the trade for Sidney has been much better for the program, then we could be nicer about it.

Shell – while the jury is still out – somehow, this year where we went 5-11 and went to the NIT has been much more enjoyable than last year.

There is definitely a huge difference in the sideline demeanor – the confidence he inspires, the way he works the refs, and how he adjusts to game situations.

chop, apart from the obvious, I’d say that’s because (a) our expectations were lower coming into the year, (b) we had players emerge who are really fun to watch, (c) both the players and the coaches exhibited a passion that’s truly been lacking — and they were having fun, (d) wins over UNC and Duke, and (e) late-season surge instead of fade.

Speaking of passion, did anybody else go out tonight and cheer for Michigan St?
It was a close game for a while, but when you’re essentially at home against a team that was as vulnerable to falling apart as MSU, things can get bad toward the end.
Obviously they did, so when I made a quip about “having to deal with these bandwagon [expletive]s for another week,” one of them nearly wanted to pick a fight with me.
It’s just really disgusting how you can’t go anywhere in this area without a slew of Babbitts cheering in a vainness they call “college basketball.”
This certainly is a trite observation here, but it is my passion to contest such douchebaggery…

    RBC vs Reynolds …
Reynolds is a wonderfully hot, uncomfortable, bad sight lines, fans right on the court, small seats and all the rest (along with a LOT of BB history).
RBC is more modern, much better parking, off campus (not a good thing IMHO), good sight lines, fans comfortably removed from the action.
I love Reynolds for all it’s faults but I recognize it’s day has passed.
Good and exciting teams will draw fans to the RBC and recreate the atmosphere of Reynolds. I see the chances of that happening being very good.
Next year will be another challenge – but I’m excited about the eventual outcome.

class of 04 – Michigan State is very tough. We have more offensive weapons than they do.

Beo – I agree. When I say that this year was more satisfying, I’m serious. Last year was downright depressing. It might be because we played our best ball in December and January, but I can’t recall a year that was so little fun where you win 10 conference games.

I’m just as enthused that our team seems to have discovered the importance of defense, rebounding and mental toughness. IMHO, that was sorely missing for most of the regular season.

Like I said, if I was to get a few minutes alone w/ Sid – I’d like to ask him what he’s learned this year. I think he’s always had the sideline demeanor, the ability to adjust to in-game situations, and the ability to game plan, but I wonder what he’s learned about dealing w/ college kids and their quirks. Remember, in the NBA, as much as it is best, is the best of the best. Those guys, no doubt they are prima donnas, but they are probably much more driven and focused than given credit for.

“I’ll hold my judgement of Lowe’s success until…”

Just add another, McWufPacker06, to the large crowd of doubters. Then when he has no alternative and starts acting like he’s been on board all along, we’ll all know better. Kinda like some the other folks who have posted on this thread.

“We were vilified… ridiculed… mocked… for having expectations and passion.

Yes, we want vindication, and we’re getting it.

And you bet your ass that I’ll wallow in being right for as long as I damn well please.”

That’s the same reason why I am not about give these folks, the sudden flip floppers, the ones who were talking down and acting like I didn’t have a clue for wanting a coaching change, any kind of break just yet.

You boys just hang in there, we’ll get over it much faster than you guys will get over Sendek.

“The RBC Center will have a great atmosphere when we win. I’ve been there when it’s full and it’s a fun place to watch a game.

I grew up going to games at Reynolds and yeah, it was loud…but the thing that made it great were the teams that Valvano put out on the floor. I went to plenty of games during the Robinson years and it was awful.

When we’re not in the bottom third of the ACC standings, those corporate seats will be filled and it will be loud and red.”

Amen, its the product you put on the floor, not the building…the RBC has been just as loud in big games and its a much better building for the fans to watch a game.

  13. thebigwood 03/18/2007 at 9:58 AM #

Astral Rain, are you in Columbia? If so, where do you watch the games?

  14. 70wolf 03/18/2007 at 9:59 AM #

….and in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe right now AZ State fans are considering their 2-14 season and their new style of basketball (which they can no longer recognize) and are being told: (1) we have a really good recruiting classs coming in next year; (2) just wait till Herb can get some players that fit his style of play then you’ll really see something; (3) Herb did really well with the talent that he had; (4) once he gets some players you’ll see Ricjk Pitino fast break basketball. …..and some old fan who goes to church with Herb is writing an open letter to the fans about the “seeds of greatness” …….NEWSFLASH if the seeds couldnt grow in the NC piedmont they sure as hell aren’t going to grow in the desert !!

Is there any limit to how many times Rochester’s comment can be posted and reposted?

“the thing is, it’s not really Herb I want to bash, it’s all the naysayers and jackasses who lambasted us last spring. And unfortunately the only way to make the case that they were the wackos, not us, is to point out how much better off we are now that we have Sid and Herb is long gone.”
    — Rochester

Herb is long gone, but the know it alls who actually knew nothing at all in reality, are still hanging around and readily giving their opinions just like nothing ever happened. Sorry to say it, but you guys lost a lot of your credibility back there.

  16. WolfInVolCountry 03/18/2007 at 11:13 AM #

I have a friend whose sister and brother-in-law just relocated to Raleigh in the midst of the ACC tournament. Similar to Rochester’s acquaintance, they knew very little about ACC basketball, but were immediately consumed by the passion it brings. Everyone they worked with told them that they had to choose an allegiance. Right away they knew that the “Man-in-Red” was their guy and NC State was their team. Over the last three weeks they have become rabid Wolfpackers. I think it will stick.

I don’t think Herb would have ever inspired that. Vanilla is still vanilla.

BTW, these new Pack backers said that State Fans are the most passionate and caring fans about their team that they have ever seen. They find the moniker “lunatic fringe” laughable. They would know about passion since they left a town dominated by the Red Sox and Pats.

“Has anyone heard anything about one of the top players in the sophomore class (high school) being very interested in NC State??”

No. Akeem Richmond, and Earnest Ross are the only two that come to mind. Either one would be excellent prospects in ’09. Not sure if you meant local or national prospects. C.J. Leslie in ’10 is the one I really want State to go after with all they have. The entire crop of prep freshman in NC is very interesting right now and it just happens that we will have many scholly’s opening up around the same time (being that no unforeseen changes occur). All in all it should be pretty exciting to see how things shape up in the years to come with the short term success this staff has had filling the roster with quality players. Hope it continues, it would be great to pair this staff with high quality athletes and depth at each position.

“while the jury is still out”

The jury is NOT still out. I repeat, NOT.

How long it will take, or whether Sidney Lowe will be the man to take us all the way back there, is yet to be seen, that’s all. The spirit and momentum he has recaptured is worth more than all of the past FIVE NCAAT trips combined. We will become a force to reckoned with again in the ACC and have show that somewhat already. National titles though, they require some luck, and nobody can guarantee that.

  19. Rochester 03/18/2007 at 2:15 PM #

I know the jury’s in in my house. Sid’s the man. I think the Wolfpack Club should take up a collection to get him some body guards. The only thing that derails our return to the top is if something happens to Sidney Lowe.

  20. redfred2 03/18/2007 at 2:31 PM #

    Rochester

Do you think a stake out, or that both Cedar and Joe need to be tailed?

  21. Rochester 03/18/2007 at 2:36 PM #

RF2, We have no proof they’re not the same guy. We’ll assign our top man to the task.

  22. redfred2 03/18/2007 at 2:47 PM #

I’m thinking maybe the guy(???) off A&E. BOOyah!!!

  23. ShootingGuard 03/18/2007 at 2:54 PM #

“I believe that coaches typically have a good first year as the players are trying to impress him.”

Yeah, the players at Arizona State really tried to impress their first year coach…

  24. redfred2 03/18/2007 at 3:10 PM #

shoosting, They just had a bad run of luck out there, that’s all. Strangely enough some players left the program, you can’t expect the head coach to have any control over that, no matter how much experience he’s had with it in the past.
