ACC Championship Game Entry (Halftime Update)

Sidney Lowe’s debut season as the Wolfpack has been a resounding success and has all of StateFansNation dreaming about the future. But, before we get to the future, let’s pray for a miracle today.

A lot of the media and younger Wolfpackers keep referring to the 1983 run to the title. I guess that is understandable, especially with the presence of Sidney Lowe. But, I liken this run more to the 1987 run than the 1983 run.

The 1987 Wolfpack team was lower seeded than the 1983 team. Additionally, the ’87 team had to play a Tarheel team in the ACC Finals that was much more of a juggernaut than today’s Tarheel opponent. If NC State could pull the upset in 1987, then nothing is impossible today.

The Wolfpack is playing with house money today. Nothing much left to say.

Go get em…

Haltime Comments

* 7 ties

* 10 lead changes

* State’s biggest lead was 6 points at 18-12

* The game was played at a very high level. Very impressive.

* The Heels started gaining traction at the exact time that the refs swallowed their whistles and allowed extreme perimeter contact during the guarding of Engin Atsur.

* Don’t misunderstand my previous comments, thus far this has been a fantastically officiated game.

* The difference in these two teams is simply – the bench.

* McCauley just does not perform/match-up well against the tall and athletic bigs of the Tarheels.

I’m going to start the Grant bashing since it’s worked so far this weekend. Gavin “Stonehands” Grant turns it over again.

  2. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 1:02 PM #

Unfortunately that is about as good as we can do. I would really be surprised to see us hang with them in the 2nd half. They just have too much fire power.

  3. redfred2 03/11/2007 at 1:02 PM #

What the hell is Fells doing just STANDING in the corner?!!!

  4. McPete 03/11/2007 at 1:02 PM #

it’s concentration. the same reason a WR drops an easy pass. not fatigue. he’ll do that at the beginning of a game.

Alright Sid, work your half time magic.

  6. jg3000 03/11/2007 at 1:04 PM #

My girlfriend (who doesn’t know a great deal about basketball) just said ‘State’s players look a little slow.’
She’s right. I think the fatigue is catching up with us…

8 pts, not impossible, but storm clouds are out. We’re going to need some ultra special magic to get things working.

  8. McPete 03/11/2007 at 1:04 PM #

they’re not done yet. they can play better defense, and protect the ball on offense. they’re still in this. but you gotta guard that 3 point shot. unc has too many capable shooters. make wright get his points on the line. he shoots like 55% on the FT line.

  9. BJD95 03/11/2007 at 1:04 PM #

Grant’s play today has been completely unacceptable. He has to get his head back in the game. I don’t think it’s fatigue so much as it’s UNC playing their A game and getting a couple of momentum-changing 3s.

Silver lining – think Sid still has 4 time outs to use for rest in the second half.

Slow the game down. UNC cannot play in a consistent halfcourt set. Especially with Hansbrough ineffective. Keep the tempo down, work your halfcourt set and look for backdoor opportunities. Also, great job on the offensive glass. One half to makeup 8 points is not insurmountable. Get out there and kick their ass and you’ll be ACC champs.

Fells has once again hit his first two shots and absolutely disappeared. Stonehands apparently likes to wait till the second half over every game to warm up and turn it on.

Those quick 8 points by UNX just killed us.

There’s still a chance we could win…here’s to Hope.

I agree, throw some HARD fouls and make them think twice. It’s harder to get your shooting touch when you get hacked hard just getting the ball up in position to shoot.

  13. BJD95 03/11/2007 at 1:07 PM #

That Brandt asshole cheers harder for UNC than Vitale, even.

No one has given State a chance in hell to win this game. It’s just great that they got this far.

Screw that. State has played an amazing 140 min.’s of basketball in the past couple of days. That’s not a fluke.

State should be just as disappointed if they lose this game as if they lost the first game against Duke. Sid isn’t here to prove a point, he’s here to win.

In my mind they play this well because Sid keeps the doubt out of their minds. The best thing State could have done to prepare for this game was to not listen to the media.

Where’s chillywater and his patent statement this weekend?? We need to hear it….

  17. Rick 03/11/2007 at 1:11 PM #

“Hand-check Miller is at it again…”

How this is not called I will never understand.

This is not very sportsmanlike but I would send in Clark and have him pop Traveller in the face. Not hard just enough to make him think twice about going in the lane.

  18. tvp 03/11/2007 at 1:11 PM #

My Fells for 26 production looked good early on, but then he disappeared. Why doesn’t he drive it some?

  19. Packster 03/11/2007 at 1:12 PM #

The officiating in this game has drastically changed from the other games in the tournament so far. This officiating allows a lot more aggressiveness on defense and favors the tarholes. I think Sid will work some halftime magic. We are still in this game without a doubt.

  20. redfred2 03/11/2007 at 1:13 PM #

Pick and roll hasn’t existed so far, they have to start screening off the ball.

  21. Texpack 03/11/2007 at 1:13 PM #

Sidney was right in his interview with ESPN. Too many quick shots. He will get them focused and we will make a run.

  22. Packster 03/11/2007 at 1:15 PM #

We would be 20 behind if Sendek was coaching.

  23. Wolf in Mavs Clothing 03/11/2007 at 1:15 PM #

I feel like turning down the volume on my TV, everytime UNC gets a lead they act like the games over.

We ARE going to win this, the teams worked far to hard this week to let an 8 point difference determin the outcome of this ball game.

  24. NeverGiveUp 03/11/2007 at 1:17 PM #

Sidney will coach them up, and do his best to exploit match ups. He’s done it each game so far.
We are getting tired and losing focus.

If we can keep our focus and dictate tempo, I think we have real chance. If we keep it close, UNC will tighten up as the end game approaches. They showed their youth in Raleigh , and if they are close at the end, I think they show it again.

  25. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/11/2007 at 1:18 PM #

I’d like to see more isolation down low by McCauley and Costner, they just don’t need to hold on to the ball so long that the double team is firmly on them and they can’t take it to the basket. I know that the UNX guards are killing us but taking it at their bigs and “hopefully” getting them in foul trouble.
