ACC Championship Game Entry (Halftime Update)

Sidney Lowe’s debut season as the Wolfpack has been a resounding success and has all of StateFansNation dreaming about the future. But, before we get to the future, let’s pray for a miracle today.

A lot of the media and younger Wolfpackers keep referring to the 1983 run to the title. I guess that is understandable, especially with the presence of Sidney Lowe. But, I liken this run more to the 1987 run than the 1983 run.

The 1987 Wolfpack team was lower seeded than the 1983 team. Additionally, the ’87 team had to play a Tarheel team in the ACC Finals that was much more of a juggernaut than today’s Tarheel opponent. If NC State could pull the upset in 1987, then nothing is impossible today.

The Wolfpack is playing with house money today. Nothing much left to say.

Go get em…

Haltime Comments

* 7 ties

* 10 lead changes

* State’s biggest lead was 6 points at 18-12

* The game was played at a very high level. Very impressive.

* The Heels started gaining traction at the exact time that the refs swallowed their whistles and allowed extreme perimeter contact during the guarding of Engin Atsur.

* Don’t misunderstand my previous comments, thus far this has been a fantastically officiated game.

* The difference in these two teams is simply – the bench.

* McCauley just does not perform/match-up well against the tall and athletic bigs of the Tarheels.

    Next year, I think we will ROCK the ACC, the ACCT and the NCAAT!!

    “Costner did not break the all-time scoring record. Childress had 107 points in only three games.”
    That is what I get for listening to the talkign chips at Raycom.

    I understand that typically a player from a winning team is chosen as the Case award winner. In the history of the ACC tournament, only 3 players have won from losing teams:

    1980 – Albert King (Maryland) won MVP while Duke won tourney
    1971 – Lee Dedmon (UNC) tied for MVP with John Roche of winning USC
    1954 – Dickie Hemric (WFU) won MVP while NCSU won tourney

    However, part of my thinking is that in order for this to happen, you need two things:
    1. A dominant individual on the team that loses the title game.
    2. A balanced team that wins the title game, with no dominant individual either in the final or in the tournament overall.

    Both of those criteria were met this year. I guess the bottom line is that it just won’t be happening any more.

    chop, I’m about 75% agreed that you’re right, but Clemson, GT, AND DUKE all stunk it up. Duke has lost three straight; if they were anyone but Duke, they’d probably already be out. Maryland sucked bogwater too. Virginia Tech and Virginia both choked at the end of the season too.

    If you go back to Feb. 14, NC State’s record is 5-4 with the only losses coming on the road to UNX (top 5 team), FSU (bubble team), Maryland (top-25 team) and UNX in the ACC title game. Wins include #25 Va Tech, Wake Forest at home (a win that looks much better given Wake’s late surge), #21 Duke, #24 Maryland and Va. Tech again.

    Duke has an RPI of 15 – but they are only going to get a bid because they are Duke?

    MD has an RPI of 16 and is 8-2 in their last 10 games – but they stunk it up? One loss to Miami does not ruin their season.

    Please get back to reality here.

    So Joe, you sayin’ Maryland played a great tournament? Because I was saying they didn’t.

    Please pay attention.

    Beo – Yea, I wonder if we beat BC, Clemson, UVa or Miami w/ a healthy Engin.

    Next year, we’ll address almost all of our shortcomings. We’ll go from having one of the most shallow teams, to one of the deeper ones. We’ll go from having 1injured PG at half speed ( a very smart one) – to having 2.

    We pick up 3 guards, and at least one big man. The big question mark is how everything will work out this off-season. Will Costner come back? Will Grant come back as a US citizen? Who, if anyone, will transfer?

    Re the “dunk”, wonder why Hansborough got an elbow in his nose the other night? Ask for it long enough, and you’ll get it!
