ACC Championship Game Entry (Halftime Update)

Sidney Lowe’s debut season as the Wolfpack has been a resounding success and has all of StateFansNation dreaming about the future. But, before we get to the future, let’s pray for a miracle today.

A lot of the media and younger Wolfpackers keep referring to the 1983 run to the title. I guess that is understandable, especially with the presence of Sidney Lowe. But, I liken this run more to the 1987 run than the 1983 run.

The 1987 Wolfpack team was lower seeded than the 1983 team. Additionally, the ’87 team had to play a Tarheel team in the ACC Finals that was much more of a juggernaut than today’s Tarheel opponent. If NC State could pull the upset in 1987, then nothing is impossible today.

The Wolfpack is playing with house money today. Nothing much left to say.

Go get em…

Haltime Comments

* 7 ties

* 10 lead changes

* State’s biggest lead was 6 points at 18-12

* The game was played at a very high level. Very impressive.

* The Heels started gaining traction at the exact time that the refs swallowed their whistles and allowed extreme perimeter contact during the guarding of Engin Atsur.

* Don’t misunderstand my previous comments, thus far this has been a fantastically officiated game.

* The difference in these two teams is simply – the bench.

* McCauley just does not perform/match-up well against the tall and athletic bigs of the Tarheels.

Costner unanimous all-tourney team. Grant also made it. Would be interested to know how close the MVP vote was.

BJD, I can see your point, I just think end game breakaways are pretty common. But I see your point. Personally, his post-dunk stuff was worse and wish he hadn’t done that.

As for the crowd – ACC tourney crowds are almost always predominately UNC when we play. This time it was even moreso because its not like most state fans could just jump in the car saturday night and get down there, whereas a lot of unc fans were already there, expecting a deep run.

I’m disappointed State lost but what a game! Two teams playing at a very high level. Lowe and company – You dun good.

State fan for 22 years… Hate Carolina with a passion.

Not a Heel, just to clear up any confusion.

Just a fan who tries to watch game with reason and passion.

” Personally, his post-dunk stuff was worse and wish he hadn’t done that.”
Which adds to my opinion of his classnedss.

Combine that with your plethera of inbread Walmart fans that pull for you because you win and that explains the crowd.

Oh yeah I forgot your gang contingent because they want to “represent”.

No surpise that that Wright won the award.

“Absent Lawson, I thought Carolina acquitted themselves very well today. They showed alot of heart, too. And did their talking with their play. Congratulations to their coaches and players, other than Asshole Lawson.”

I’d agree. I do tire of Hansbro’s bull in a China shop routine, but I’d problaby be a big fan of his effort if he wore red.

If you listened to the post game PC, you missed one of the most stupid questions ever:

“Coach – who is the second best team in the ACC.”

Sidney’s response – “Are you trying make me enemies” was very appropriate.

When it’s knucklehead’s like that voting, no wonder Wright won the MVP. That’s such utter bs – UNC probably still wins this tourney w/out Wright. When they really needed hoops tonight – Terry and Hansbro delivered – Wright missed chippies. OTOH, State doesn’t get past the first round w/out Costner. I tell you these voters are jokes. I wonder if this is reflection of them as people as well.

How about you cheer instead of criticisizing other State fans?

    Some points…

    1) Can we stop the flame wars please?

    2) If the score was reversed and Fells got an uncontested jam at their end, we would love every second of it! I am laying off of Lawson. I’m with you 44, I woulda done the same too. Just remember that fellas, pay ’em back the next time!

    3) Costner for Case award? I would have loved to see it, but it’s not realistic. If State wins, definitely.

    4) The ONLY problem I had with today’s game was the final score. I have no beef with the refs, they were mostly fair, and I thought that the gift fouls were evenly distributed.

Keep it up Sid! i am filled with hope for the future!

“Wright was the best player for the winning team.”

Fine. Then give him the “best player for the winning team” award. The MVP was Costner. Biggest ripoff since Mitch Kupchak was voted player of the year over Kenny Carr in 1976.

Excellent heart showed by the team. Proud in ways I’ve not felt in 10 years, and still prouder for the performance at the end of the game. Be advised … there’s a new sheriff in town. No reason to think that NC State will not only make the NCAA tournament next season, but will vie among the upper-crust of the league for some time to come. Great job, Sid and the Kids. I would love to see the team go out and do some damage in the NIT tournament just to stick it once again to the HSSSer’s, since Herb never won that either, Sid still has some goals to acheive THIS SEASON!!

“The ONLY problem I had with today’s game was the final score. I have no beef with the refs, they were mostly fair, and I thought that the gift fouls were evenly distributed.”

This is how you make your point about the refs. You do it without criticizing other people’s opinions.

    i want to cry

  13. Mr O 03/11/2007 at 3:02 PM #

Costner did not break the all-time scoring record. Childress had 107 points in only three games.

  14. wayofthemaster 03/11/2007 at 3:02 PM #

Don’t mean to take it out on you Rick,

It just gets old hearing people complain about the officiating everytime the Pack loses. That kind of logic reminds me of a Wal-Mart Tarheel fan.

My original post wasn’t directed at you.

You may not be one of those fans, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and we’ll call it a truce, agreed?

  15. C Dog 03/11/2007 at 3:02 PM #

Raycom had the wrong info about the tourney scoring record. Randolph scored more than 100 in only 3 games.

As far the most points in 4 tourney games, only 1 team has played 4 games: the Pack in 97 and 07.

  16. PittsburghPackFan 03/11/2007 at 3:03 PM #

    Appreciate that Rick.

I hate losing to the Holes too. My entire family are Carolina fans! Let’s not take the frustration out on each other. We’re on the same side after all!

  17. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 3:03 PM #

Just wondering — how often has the tourney MVP NOT played for the Championship team. Even if it “had” to go to a “Hole”, I would’ve given it to Hansbro or Terry. Costner, by far, had the best individual performance of the tourney IMO.

  18. wayofthemaster 03/11/2007 at 3:05 PM #

    BJD95,

You’re probably right about the NIT.

They are bound for a mental letdown after this week.

  19. beowolf 03/11/2007 at 3:05 PM #

NC State would acquit itself much better in the NCAA tournament than the rest of the ACC’s choking bubble teams. But of course, we won’t get the chance either.

  20. SaccoV 03/11/2007 at 3:10 PM #

I think already, State deserves it over FSU and Ga Tech, but we won’t get it. Both of those teams should be ashamed of their tournament performances.

  21. SaccoV 03/11/2007 at 3:10 PM #

Please ignore the “already” from previous post.

  22. choppack1 03/11/2007 at 3:13 PM #

Beo – And to be fair, we don’t deserve a bid either. Had we won 2 more other conference games, we’d likely be in the tourney.

I do wonder what this season would have been like if we had a healthy Atsur this year….Of course, I seem to be wondering something like that every year.

  23. Rick 03/11/2007 at 3:20 PM #

“You may not be one of those fans, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and we’ll call it a truce, agreed?”

    Agreed.
    Go Pack

  24. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 3:20 PM #

I think the NIT will be good for us. Truthfully, I don’t think we’d have a chance to WIN the NCAA, but we could beat the field and actually WIN the NIT. Even if we just got to Madison Square Garden, it would be great for the team.

  25. justaguy 03/11/2007 at 3:21 PM #

“I do wonder what this season would have been like if we had a healthy Atsur this year”

You aren’t alone. In yesterday’s press conference Lowe was asked (paraphrased):
For those of us that don’t follow ACC basketball, how did this team only manage to win 5 conference games this season?

    Basically the answer was Atsur.
