    At least it’s real ESPN…

Prime time…The NIT is shaping up to be pretty decent. WV will be tough, but we can do it.

On another note, Tommy Amaker fired from Michigan today.

Thats wonderful that one of the hottest teams still playin ball is gonna finally be televised. Though, I wont be watching from a TV. Ill be right there cheering my boys on from the stands. Man, i really love the heart of this team. Im riding this one out all the way till we hoist a title or go down in defeat fighting our asses off. I hope to see some of you there.

I had to refresh my memory about the first WVU game. State was tied at the half. They fell behind by 6, then got within 2 points at the 7:12 mark after a basket by Costner. They didn’t score again for over four minutes. Meanwhile, WVU pulled away with two 3 pointers and a 2, and won by 11.

State won the rebounding 33-26, but they made 13 3-pointers. Costner, McCauley, Fells and Grant all played 40 minutes. Neiman had 8 as a starter, and Horner was the only sub with 32.

It will be very interesting to see how things go now that Engin is back, with the team full of confidence and battle-tested, with Sid in full coaching force. Would have been nice to play WV in Raleigh, but I think the Pack would just as soon avenge their loss on the Mountaineer’s court.

Anyone remember why the first game was in Chrleston? Was it a preseason coach’s classis of sme sort? like the previous poster I’m a bit foggy on the detais of that game… seems like a lifetime ago.

^GAWolf- I think WVU just uses that venue for a game or two per year, similar to Illinois using the United Center every now and then.

Dare we hope for HD coverage?

Pretty much every game I’ve seen on ESPN or ESPN2 this year has been in HD. Very rare exceptions on the Deuce. What I remember most about the first WVU game is that the 1-3-1 forced us into a bunch of turnovers. I am pretty sure that will be improved with Atsur playing and lots of experience gained since December. If I were coaching WVU I’d play a lot of zone until we either nail some threes or figure out how to get McCauley some really good shots.

Posted this in one of the earlier threads after posting it on another forum:

Rematch: N.C. State at West Virginia

They played on 12/6 at West Virginia and West Virginia won 71-60. State shot 46%, made 13/14 free throws, held West Virginia to 39% field goal shooting, and outrebounded West Virginia 33-26. However, N.C. State had four problems:

    1. State had 17 turnovers. This led to them getting only 48 shot attempts, compared to 61 for West Virginia. Gavin Grant was the main culprit, with 9, but in his defense, he is normally the starting SF and had to play PG that game because Engin Atsur was injured. It was only his second game ever playing PG. Turnovers have been State’s primary weakness all season, as they have averaged ~15 per game.

    2. State was only 3/16 from the 3 point line. This was State’s worst 3 point shooting game of the season; State shot 36% on the season. I expect them to be better this time, both because the team is better now and because I wouldn’t expect them to have their worst 3 point shooting game of the season again.

    3. State did not defend the 3 point line. West Virginia shot 13/28. I realize they shoot well from the 3 point line, but that is above their season percentage of 37%. On the season, State opponents averaged 37%. Seems reasonable that State could hold them to at least a little bit lower percentage this time, and definitely less than 13 made 3 pointers for the game.

    4. 4 of State’s starters each played 40 minutes, and only 6 players played in the game. Atsur is back, so State now has primarily a 7 man rotation. That helps keep the players a bit fresher, and allows them to be a bit more aggressive, with foul trouble not quite as much of a concern.

Reasons to think State has an excellent chance to win this time.

    1. Atsur is State’s most important player. He missed the first game, but is back. He has started over 100 games for N.C. State and plays for the Turkish national team. Last season, he was named to the Collegeinsider.com Defensive All-America Team (21 players make it). He has definitely been gimpy since returning (his injury was a hamstring injury), but there was a noticeable difference in State’s play when he got back to 70% or so.

    2. The first time, head coach Sidney Lowe was coaching only the 7th college basketball game of his career, having spent his career in the NBA before this season. He now has 28 more games under his belt. And he has proven to be a really good coach. Definite shades of Valvano, who was his coach on the 1983 NCAA championship team.

    3. Entering the season, only 2 players were in State’s rotation who had ever had more than trivial playing time. One was Atsur, who missed the first game and is now back. But also, the other 5 players in the rotation (walk-on senior who never before played, two sophomores who never played as freshmen last season, one redshirt freshman, and one true freshman) now have 28 more games of experience. (3 of State’s top 7 players from last season graduated, another went pro early, and another chose to focus on baseball since he may be the top pick in this year’s baseball draft.)

    4. State is pretty hot, having won 5 of 6 games, with the only loss to UNC in a game that was a 3 point game with 3 minutes remaining, despite being State’s 4th game in 4 days at that time.

    I’m expecting a little revenge.

For anyone that went to the game in December, are the BB fans as roudy as the FB fans? Regardless, we’ll be their wearing our Wolfpack Red proudly.

    *or the Ocho.*

    Whats the Ocho?

  16. Dr. BadgerPack 03/19/2007 at 7:50 AM #

^The Ocho is probably a reference to the movie “Dodgeball” where they have ESPN 8 televising dodgeball games. Those scense delivered such classic color commentary as “Pepper needs new shorts” after a particularly outstanding “play” in a dodgeball game.
