4-2 vs The Big Four; Red Jacket goes 2-0-1 [UPDATED 11:20pm]

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina…I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Lee Fowler
NC State Athletics Director
March, 2005

* Thanks to the N&O for the following:

It took Sidney Lowe one season to do what Herb Sendek did only once in 10 seasons — beat Duke and Carolina in the same season.

State beat Duke 85-80 in overtime and UNC on Feb. 3. Lowe’s 2-2 against Duke and UNC. Sendek went 3-21 vs. Duke and 5-17 vs. UNC. The only time Sendek beat both in the same season was 2002-03.

It’s the first time State beat a ranked UNC and a ranked Duke team in the same season since 1990-91.

* Couldn’t help but remember the following in light of the opponent tonight:

But let’s assume for a moment that Sendek does leave N.C. State. The question then becomes, can State do better?

Would State be able to attract a prominent big name coach or would the school have to roll the dice on somebody young and unproven, maybe a Valvano discipline such as Derek Whittenburg?…

…I can’t help thinking about how Clemson football fans ran Ken Hatfield off in the early 1990s—largely because he was a bad personality fit at the redneck school. He didn’t drive a pickup truck or spit tobacco like Danny Ford. All he did was win football games. So they ran him off as Wolfpack fans are trying to run Sendek off and hired Tommy West instead. They loved him—he was a Danny Ford clone in every way except he turned the program into a mediocrity (he even lost to Duke!).

N.C. State had better be careful. They may run off Sendek and find themselves stuck with Tommy West.

Al Featherston,
Duke Basketball Report,

* In a year where NC State played the toughest schedule in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Wolfpack is guaranteed a non-losing season in Coach Sidney Lowe’s first season at the helm of a depleted NC State program.

* NC State has delivered two of Duke’s last three losses in the ACC Tournament. Tonight, in the first overtime Tourney game in three years, Sidney Lowe became the second NC State coach in a row to defeat a higher-seeded Duke team in his first ACC Tournament.

* Duke had knocked NC State out of four of the last six ACC tournaments – including two wins in the ACC finals.

* Wolfpackers EVERYWHERE need to set a precedent on Friday and fly your flags on your homes and on your cars!!!

* NC State played with one McDonald’s All-American tonight. Duke played with six McDonald’s All-Americans.

* Coach Sidney Lowe improves to a 4-2 record vs the Big Four and currently does not have a losing record against a single Big Four school. Additionally, Coach Lowe is 8-2 vs teams in the state of North Carolina.

* The national media and the HSSS can re-visit your crow by clicking here.

* Do NOT underestimate the importance of the following – Duke did not out rebound State tonight AND the Blue Devils had three more turnovers than State (with Engin Atsur playing).

* The N&O’s ACCNow blog has the following picture linked on the site. It is especially interesting to those of us NC State fans who clamored for a change in our basketball program for six friggin years in light of the fact that if Lee Fowler would have had his way, Sidney Lowe would have never been coaching at NC State. Sometimes you have to wonder about the gall & nerve of some people

* The N&O says that Costner & the Wolfpack stun Duke.

NC State, with forward Brandon Costner and senior point guard Engin Atsur refusing to wilt, roared back from several deficits to score the second big upset of the ACC men’s basketball tournament tonight, ousting Duke 85-80.

At the end of a back-and-forth second half, Atsur gave the Pack the lead at 70-68 with his third three-pointer of the second half, with 1:30 left, but Nelson tied the score for the 11th time with a layup with 41 seconds to go. State had five shots down the stretch, but Courtney Fells’ three-pointer and Atsur’s tip follow did not find the mark as regulation time expired.

Costner converted a three-point play with 4:22 left in overtime, and State maintained the lead the rest of the way. Gavin Grant’s free throw with 25 seconds left gave the Pack a four-point lead at 83-79, and Costner put it away with two free tosses to make it 85-80 with 11 seconds to go.

Costner led State with a career-high 30 points, and senior guard Engin Atsur added 21. Ben McCauley had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

* Departing shot focused on ACC pride – if Boston College wins on Friday, the ACC will have NINE teams with 20 or more wins.

Did anyone else notice how fouls on moving screens were called in the night session as compared to the afternoon games?
And as I said before the tourney started “beware the turtle” – I forgot part – “sleeping”
I am really getting tired of the “TV pricks” insisting on talking about everything BUT the game they are “covering” – it would be nice to once actually have then telll some pertinent info about the game they are watching rather than a 3 minute chat about some DIII program – I didn’t mind a mention I minded missing all the action in the game while Brad-a@# droned on and on and on and on.

Here’s what I sent Jerry Ratcliffe, Sports Editor for the Daily Progress (Charlottesville, VA) this morining. They have not been ugly to NCSU, just overlooked us.

    Jerry,

I read the progress every day and your analysis is usually pretty accurate. However, concerning your prediction yesterday for the Wolfpack “….don’t expect much from this team”, seems you guys forgot that we were without a point guard most of the year. I hope the wahoo nation, especially the players, buy in to your analysis. Your opponents today certainly don’t – just ask Duke.

That was absolutely beautiful. Since his name has to be mentioned, I’ll say that I don’t see why Sendek supporters have to be attacked again, but rest assured I have no doubts that we have something special going on here. I’m almost scared to hope, to believe that there can be three schools in the same area beating each other up on equal footing (if not us with an upper hand..or foot…). I can think of nothing more exciting.

Lowe, I’ve been behind you all year, but I’m amazed at what you’ve accomplished with this team. Let’s keep it going.

great thing about Wake winning is if we can find a way to get by Va. we would face one of two teams we match up against very well and went undefeated against in the regular season.

  5. RickJ 03/09/2007 at 8:24 AM #

We scored the first 8 possessions of the overtime. If Grant hadn’t missed those last 2 free throws with 5 seconds to go, we would have scored on every possession of the OT.

What in the world is Dookie V going to do the next 3 days? He has got to be feeling like an alien! I guess he’ll have to create another whole notebook of oneliners and a new list of names to drop. I love it! You da’ man, Sid!

Good point on a great day of ACC basketball. Every game yesterday came down to the last possession.

Rawlings had a good article on the lack of iterest in the tourney in Tampa. You could actually go up to the window and BUY a book of tickets. That’s right, walk in off the street, not give penny one to an ACC school and buy a book of ACC tickets.

Of course, I was thinking today too. I love college basketball and great ACC tourney games, but why you would you want to go a warm, tropical city like Tampa in late winter – nearby some beautiful beaches – and spend all day INSIDE watching basketball. Horrible decision to bring the tourney to Tampa.

    Dan

How’s that coffee tastin’ this morning?

  9. Wulfpack 03/09/2007 at 8:59 AM #

All I can say is WOW! What a huge win for our program. Sid has done one hell of a job in a short amount of time. The RED jacket is classic! Let’s go get one tonight…I hope you are all wearing RED today!

^^There is no doubt Sid knows offense. If he can instill the defense needed to win we could be very good in the future.

An interesting thing about his offense is that I do not think it will be easy to emulate. He calls the plays based on matchups, it is his innate feel for the game that makes it work.

  11. GoldenChain 03/09/2007 at 9:11 AM #

    What a great effort!
Sid had had his the boys shot 60% more times in 1 season than Herb did in 10!
The official ACC site featured an article about the ’87 worst to 1st Pack, maybe it can happen again.

My only gripe, Horner looked lost as hell out there. And on both ends of the court. Seriously, he was a liability in there. It’ll be nice to have a real bench next year.

  13. redfred2 03/09/2007 at 9:15 AM #

Grant didn’t have a good game, but to his credit, he didn’t force it either. Fells started well, then kinda disappeared offensively. Now, if we can click on all cyclinders for a couple more games…

Don’t get me wrong, I am ABSOLUTELY LOVING seeing the WOLFPACK beating teams off POINTS IN THE PAINT!!!, but how much further would a cold blooded, spot up shooter, open up that offense?

I don’t if that Leslie Neilson thing is your creation or not, but I love it!

“Something tells me I’m up to something good!” Applause from this Naked Gun aficianado as well

  16. beowolf 03/09/2007 at 9:40 AM #

I borrowed the idea from blueisstillevil, who did that for the UNC win. I just had to change the scoreboard, although that proved to be some work. Fun, tho.

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 03/09/2007 at 9:49 AM #

Good thing Virginia plays poorly on the road. Gives us a much better chance to win.

  18. ruffles31 03/09/2007 at 10:10 AM #

The Wolfpack are 8-1 in overtime games in the ACC tournament.

I hope you remember or took notes while you were doing it. They might just come in handy again. 😉

How many years has it been since we split or better with the Big 4?

    GO PACK!!! GO PACK!!!

It’s Friday, it’s March, my mind can’t concentrate on work, even though I no longer live in North Carolina, all I want to do is watch basketball…my co-workers wouldn’t understand, to them it’s just a game…to me nothing else matters today, nothing else was meant to matter today, that’s the way it was when I was growing up…that’s the way my brain’s been wired, I can’t shake it, I can only be glad we’re playing at 7 p.m. and I’ll be off work and can catch the game somehow…

    GO PACK!!! GO PACK!!!

  22. beowolf 03/09/2007 at 11:39 AM #

Golden Chain, the last time an NC State coach had a winning record in one season against the Big 4 was Jim Valvano in 1988-89. He was 4-2 with wins over both UNC and Duke.

“I’m almost scared to hope, to believe that there can be three schools in the same area beating each other up on equal footing (if not us with an upper hand..or foot…).”

    Lock

That is yet to be seen, but we know good and well there can be two for sure. We just need to be the WOLFPACK, and let the rest of the field start worrying where they fit in ONCE AGAIN.

Here’s the response I got from Jerry Ratcliffe, of the Daily Progress, to my email above:

“Congratulations on the N.C. State win. I didn’t write those capsules you referred to….Whitey Reid wrote them. I certainly understand that having Atsur makes a lot of difference. I believe N.C. State has a very talented team.”

A very gracious and timely response. I thanked him and said I am really looking forward to a competitive match up tonight.
