4-2 vs The Big Four; Red Jacket goes 2-0-1 [UPDATED 11:20pm]

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina…I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Lee Fowler
NC State Athletics Director
March, 2005

* Thanks to the N&O for the following:

It took Sidney Lowe one season to do what Herb Sendek did only once in 10 seasons — beat Duke and Carolina in the same season.

State beat Duke 85-80 in overtime and UNC on Feb. 3. Lowe’s 2-2 against Duke and UNC. Sendek went 3-21 vs. Duke and 5-17 vs. UNC. The only time Sendek beat both in the same season was 2002-03.

It’s the first time State beat a ranked UNC and a ranked Duke team in the same season since 1990-91.

* Couldn’t help but remember the following in light of the opponent tonight:

But let’s assume for a moment that Sendek does leave N.C. State. The question then becomes, can State do better?

Would State be able to attract a prominent big name coach or would the school have to roll the dice on somebody young and unproven, maybe a Valvano discipline such as Derek Whittenburg?…

…I can’t help thinking about how Clemson football fans ran Ken Hatfield off in the early 1990s—largely because he was a bad personality fit at the redneck school. He didn’t drive a pickup truck or spit tobacco like Danny Ford. All he did was win football games. So they ran him off as Wolfpack fans are trying to run Sendek off and hired Tommy West instead. They loved him—he was a Danny Ford clone in every way except he turned the program into a mediocrity (he even lost to Duke!).

N.C. State had better be careful. They may run off Sendek and find themselves stuck with Tommy West.

* In a year where NC State played the toughest schedule in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Wolfpack is guaranteed a non-losing season in Coach Sidney Lowe’s first season at the helm of a depleted NC State program.

* NC State has delivered two of Duke’s last three losses in the ACC Tournament. Tonight, in the first overtime Tourney game in three years, Sidney Lowe became the second NC State coach in a row to defeat a higher-seeded Duke team in his first ACC Tournament.

* Duke had knocked NC State out of four of the last six ACC tournaments – including two wins in the ACC finals.

* Wolfpackers EVERYWHERE need to set a precedent on Friday and fly your flags on your homes and on your cars!!!

* NC State played with one McDonald’s All-American tonight. Duke played with six McDonald’s All-Americans.

* Coach Sidney Lowe improves to a 4-2 record vs the Big Four and currently does not have a losing record against a single Big Four school. Additionally, Coach Lowe is 8-2 vs teams in the state of North Carolina.

* The national media and the HSSS can re-visit your crow by clicking here.

* Do NOT underestimate the importance of the following – Duke did not out rebound State tonight AND the Blue Devils had three more turnovers than State (with Engin Atsur playing).

* The N&O’s ACCNow blog has the following picture linked on the site. It is especially interesting to those of us NC State fans who clamored for a change in our basketball program for six friggin years in light of the fact that if Lee Fowler would have had his way, Sidney Lowe would have never been coaching at NC State. Sometimes you have to wonder about the gall & nerve of some people

* The N&O says that Costner & the Wolfpack stun Duke.

NC State, with forward Brandon Costner and senior point guard Engin Atsur refusing to wilt, roared back from several deficits to score the second big upset of the ACC men’s basketball tournament tonight, ousting Duke 85-80.

At the end of a back-and-forth second half, Atsur gave the Pack the lead at 70-68 with his third three-pointer of the second half, with 1:30 left, but Nelson tied the score for the 11th time with a layup with 41 seconds to go. State had five shots down the stretch, but Courtney Fells’ three-pointer and Atsur’s tip follow did not find the mark as regulation time expired.

Costner converted a three-point play with 4:22 left in overtime, and State maintained the lead the rest of the way. Gavin Grant’s free throw with 25 seconds left gave the Pack a four-point lead at 83-79, and Costner put it away with two free tosses to make it 85-80 with 11 seconds to go.

Costner led State with a career-high 30 points, and senior guard Engin Atsur added 21. Ben McCauley had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

* Departing shot focused on ACC pride – if Boston College wins on Friday, the ACC will have NINE teams with 20 or more wins.

    Sid Lowe is the man.
He also has the loudest whistle in basketball. Don’t know if you heard it tonight on the broadcast, but I know that in B’burg a couple of weeks ago in person he was getting peoples attention from 20 rows up on the opposite side of the court.
It might be over used but I do believe that when the incredible hulk and superman go to bed they put on Sidney Lowe pajamas.

“I need to call LF and remind him we cannot hope to compete with Duke and UNC.”

Don’t forget to call Greg D%$@^, and damn near every other sports writer in the country!

Wow – not only was that satisfying, but that was beautiful basketball – =I was one of the few who liked the Princeton offense because of the passing opportunities it gave smart players. Well, this is just beautiful and more effective..I would have loved to have seen Evtimov play in this offense.

And yes, thanks to this victory, this year is an unequivocal success. I really wonder what we would have done if Atsur had been healthy the whole year….Great job team, Wow, just wow.

I dug out my grey “NC State” that I wore to B’burg for tonight’s game. It’s now 2-0.

  5. blpack 03/08/2007 at 10:26 PM #

We’ve had a heck of a run under the circumstances. What a job by the team and coaches. 4-2!!!

  6. Mr O 03/08/2007 at 10:33 PM #

The entire team was great tonight with two special performances from Engin and Costner. Sidney kept us in it the whole game and for the first time in a long time against Duke I had confidence that we were going to win. We

Just need to get refocused for tomorrow night…

By the way, why the hell did Espn show G. Henderson multiple times at every stoppage of play?

  7. roanwolf 03/08/2007 at 10:37 PM #

My guess was to help the dukies find their excuse for tomorrow at the office. Get ready, you’ll hear things like, “well if the that Henderson kid was in there……..”

    FEAR THE BLAZER!

    FEAR THE WOLFPACK!

  9. roanwolf 03/08/2007 at 10:44 PM #

Will this change TOB’s opinion of the red blazer?
    ACC tourney time……….
Just as good today was Maryland going one and done……..
Gary Williams found another town to add to the list of unfair venues. Let’s see that is now Greensboro, Charlotte, D.C., and Tampa. Their running out of places to play.

  10. roanwolf 03/08/2007 at 10:46 PM #

Sorry, just read the comment about Gary on the tourney talk post.
    I’ll stay on topic.
    We beat Duke!!!!!!!

  11. Rochester 03/08/2007 at 10:48 PM #

My wife thinks I’m crazy because I’m going to wear the same clothes to work tomorrow I wore today (Sweet 16 t-shirt from two years ago and a dressy black NC State sweatshirt). I’ll wear them until we lose. You can’t mess with a streak.

    85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80 85-80

How many times have we seen a player get slighted in post season accolades (Costner) only to proves the experts wrong in the tourney. Outstanding job by the players and coaches.

ACC wins this year: Duke 8 and done; Wolfpack 6 and counting!

From a remote spot in the middle of WV, as a 100 mountanier fans roared at a very good game going on simulatnously on all big screens….I sat the lone NC Stae fan at my small dedicated tv in the corner of the bar.

As you all well know, a Pack fan at any time cannot declare victory….so when the final seconds expired and we won….a couple of the WV fans (in a commercial break) came over and congradulated us on beating Duke.

Funny how a lot of people hate duke.

The thing that really hit home with me was….6 Micky D all Amer’s on Duke’s bench…..1 Mickey D All Amer on ours…..but we can still win.

Let’s hope that same team has the Gas to get through a couple of more games in this Tourney.

Either way, I hope tonights W gave us the gas to get in the NIT. How many BIG teams do you have to beat to make an impression anyway?

Sorry I just read this and had to comment. I have been thinking about this so much lately… The Man is LOUD!

When we lost the 2nd UNC game I was thinking to myself, “these guys would not be trying to win the game all by themselves if Sid was over there with his whistle”. Maybe he can teach Monte the way of the whistle?

    Attaboy, Sid!

  16. old13 03/08/2007 at 11:01 PM #

Foulup’s a loser from the git go, and the only drag on the progress of Wolfpack athletics! (How can an AD who insults us alumni and givers-of-$$ to the program still be employed in Raleigh, Chancellor!!)

Way to go, Sid and Co!

Dear Seth Davis, Jeff Goodman, Yoni Cohen, ACC Basketblog, and Gregg &*&^ most of all:

    Suck a [].

    Very truly yours,

Sid Lowe and the Wolfpack Nation

Sid starts his streak of winning seasons. You saw it begin tonight

  19. VladsCross 03/08/2007 at 11:16 PM #

I can see home games next year with a major portion of the stands filled with Red Blazers…..you know it’s gonna happen.

  20. WolftownVA81 03/08/2007 at 11:20 PM #

Great job Pack. You’ve made basketball fun again. I’ll be calling the Daily Progress tomorrow who, in their ACCT summary on the front of the sports page, said “NC State had an OK season considering it was picked to finish last by the media, but don’t expect much from this team.” Wrong, wrong, wrong. This team has heart, passion and …. a health point guard. A great effort by all! Keep up the good work.

  21. Buddygreen 03/08/2007 at 11:31 PM #

My congrats to Lowe and Co. I am mighty proud to see the red jacket making a comeback. They used to be the norm at a Wolfpack Club meeting. Parkers Barbeque in Raleigh used to be a big Wolfpack Club meeting place. Place would be full of red jackets and everyone proud to be wearing them. Got a painting of V wearing one in my house. Tradition and pride is clearly back in our program! We all start wearing one! I loath those that tried to beat us down or thougth we could not compete. We have gotten rid of all but the one remaining naysayer that should go, time for LF to go also. He needs to be put to pasture with the Herbs and Montrieths of the world!

  22. PackYalie 03/08/2007 at 11:36 PM #

I hope Jimmy Shitneck Dykes enjoys his large helping of crow. He was still remarking on McRoberts’ offensive foul dunk in OT after we were two possessions ahead with a minute to go. Why can’t we have an impartial announcing crew for once?

    GO PACK!
