UNC Redux – Game Thread

There’s no sugar-coating tonight’s challenge. Vegas has the Pack as a 20+ point underdog, and Roy no doubt has his team’s mind on revenge. But we’ve met the challenge of facing the talented Holes already this season. Hell, we’ve done it this month. There is no long rival game losing streak hanging around our collective neck. Tonight, we’re playing with house money. Relax, enjoy the ride, and hope (against all reason) that we shock the basketball world once more.

Halftime Update: Wow, that was a very well-played first half. I was especially impressed with how well we took care of the basketball, and handled UNC’s ball pressure. I think both teams are playing very well. We aren’t shooting that well, have foul trouble, and are only down 1 at the break. I’ll take that. The tight whistle – note that I didn’t say unfair, I said tight is going to make things difficult for us in the second half. I also think it’s time for everyone to realize that Engin Atsur isn’t just “gritty” or “smart” – he’s good. I think he deserves 3rd team all-ACC honors.

10:24 Update:Wow, I thought Sid didn’t look good at the end of the half. Turns out, they’ve taken him to the hospital (flu-related dehydration). Very fortunate that UNC Hospital is extremely close to the Smith Center. He’s in good hands. The game is getting out of hand.

Final Thoughts: When Sid left for the hospital, you had to think our chance was over. We have too narrow a margin of error as it is – we can’t lose our coach at halftime. Dennis Horner makes a nice shot (take that one more, kid!) at the end to cancel Wes Miller’s dick move and keep the final margin under 20. In essence, it was like the GT game against a much better opponent – the Pack just couldn’t withstand 40 minutes of ball pressure with such a shallow bench. Down the stretch, we couldn’t shot, pass crisply, defend, or rebound. No legs. It was borderline criminal for Towe to leave Atsur in the game for that many minutes with the outcome decided. We need him at full strength on Saturday. Your final score – UNC 83, NC State 64.

Shut yer freakin piehole Packer. Incessantly calling the game over is just plain disrespectful. Kids watching the game learn two things from Billy Packer: (1) give up when you’re down (funny- Jimmy V said something different), and (2) Billy Packer is a prick.

  2. packk 02/21/2007 at 11:00 PM #

These freakin announcers suck. .. . 23 point lead???? Did they learn any math in school????? They are so wrong on so many things. I am sick to my stomach. I HATE Billy Packer. Why can’t Monte pull it out?????

  3. Jeremy Hyatt 02/21/2007 at 11:00 PM #

nope we are still scratching and clawing. atsur has more heart than wright and his monkey arms, and Roy Williams and his “ahead of his time”-ness.

  4. Gene 02/21/2007 at 11:00 PM #

He’s one of the few announcers left that remember when State was the best

I agree. The man has a lot of history with the ACC and does occassionally bring it out, which is refreshing. Especially after listening to the hacks ESPN has doing our games, who couldn’t find the state of North Carolina on a map.

  5. Karpaasi 02/21/2007 at 11:00 PM #

Well, we know Packer and the other announcer weren’t math majors. The last two reports have been, “UNC’s up by 20,” and “23.” Now I see. You add 10 points onto the winning team’s score :). Seems fair…I mean, according to Packer, the game is over.

    Billy is a hack.

see you Tarheels in the ACC tournment

We lost our poise in this one. I don’t know, maybe we were holding on by a thread at times in the first. This really sucks, oh well.

Gods speed to Coach Lowe. Atleast there are good hospitals in that village. I’m sure he’ll be feeling better soon. Hope the guys pull through this without too much physical damage. I still think the last three are all winnable games. Go Pack!

Just becasue Packer is a know-it-all, it doesn’t make him less of a prick. It makes him MORE of a prick.

by the way this no bench business hurts us more on the road… how the heck did we beat VT away…

I kind of want to skip school tomorrow

  12. Karpaasi 02/21/2007 at 11:05 PM #

No, no way, Packer isn’t biased…I haven’t heard a partial word come out of his mouth all evening (smirk).

  13. gumbydammit 02/21/2007 at 11:08 PM #

Up by 18 under a minute and Roy lets them launch 3’s. Class. Nothing but class.

You guys make me sick. If you dont like Packer, then you cant like any announcer. He hasnt said anything wrong all night (except for the score that one time). You guys suck. Yor upset and I am to, but for goodness sake, Packer went to Wake. He is NO unc fan.

  15. Karpaasi 02/21/2007 at 11:10 PM #

Yeah, nice shot, Wes Miller. I didn’t know he could throw a ball that far. He looks like my sister when he shots.

Roy was going for the 20 point win. Sorry buddy, you only beat us by 19…HAH.

  16. Jeremy Hyatt 02/21/2007 at 11:10 PM #

they were supposed to beat us. higher ranked class and 3 teams of subs. we did the best with what we had, but I don’t doubt the story would be a little different if our coach wasn’t poisoned.

We just didn’t have the horses tonight. Sid’s absense sort of let the fire out of us. You could see the uncertainty on the guys’ faces in the second half. We played a great first half, but the Heels have so much depth. When we aren’t shooting well and turning it over, that’s what happens. Oh well, 1-1, let the rivalry begin.

  18. MrPlywood 02/21/2007 at 11:11 PM #

Wasn’t the spread 20 points? RW must of had some money on the game…

  19. highstick 02/21/2007 at 11:12 PM #

I hope Sid refused to go to that Hell Hole hospital and demanded to go back to Rex or Wake Med!

They might kill him in Chapel Hole with a red coat on!

This was awful, but we just ran out of gas. Payback’s gonna be hell for Roy and his babies and it’s gonna come.

  20. Flannel Avenger 02/21/2007 at 11:12 PM #

That much blue would make anybody sick…

  21. vtpackfan 02/21/2007 at 11:14 PM #

I hate that foul trouble made the decision harder on when to pull out of the 2-3. Just sucks that Herb recruited Brackman knowing he was going to be on the baseball team. WTF. Sour grapes, oh well. Go to hell Carolina!

  22. beowolf 02/21/2007 at 11:16 PM #

    Perspective, guys.

Down one at half to one of the most explosive teams in the nation, a top 10 team at that, with a team that is so thin and by far the overwhelming preseason pick to finish last in the conference AND WE LOSE OUR HEAD COACH. That is not the formula for victory, and if you were told beforehand that’s what would happen, you wouldn’t be upset with the loss and just hope that Coach Lowe will be OK.

Coach just lived leaving it all on the court. Hope he gets well soon!

  23. Wolf in Mavs Clothing 02/21/2007 at 11:20 PM #

State played hard, but I agree with wulfpack, things just fell apart after Sid left. I couldn’t watch the game as I’m on the other side of the country, but I was keeping an eye on the score the whole time. It was looking good there for awhile.

My best wishes go out to Sid, hope he feels better soon.

  24. BJD95 02/21/2007 at 11:21 PM #

Coach Lowe is very active in his in-game coaching style. His absence was palpable. Don’t get me wrong – I think it was 90%+ likely that we lose even if Lowe doesn’t go to the hospital (probably closer, though). But we had NO SHOT without him.

  25. Rochester 02/21/2007 at 11:21 PM #

I hate losing to Carolina at anything, but we did split with them, which makes this one a little easier to take. The second half of this game makes our win even more remarkable. They should have been able to wear us down last time too, but they couldn’t. Sid is a master. We might not have won with him, but I bet the score would have been 10 points closer if he hadn’t gone to the hospital.

When we have the horses, we have the better game coach, so UNC better be ready for some serious ballin’ (and bawlin’) in the coming years.
