UNC Redux – Game Thread

There’s no sugar-coating tonight’s challenge. Vegas has the Pack as a 20+ point underdog, and Roy no doubt has his team’s mind on revenge. But we’ve met the challenge of facing the talented Holes already this season. Hell, we’ve done it this month. There is no long rival game losing streak hanging around our collective neck. Tonight, we’re playing with house money. Relax, enjoy the ride, and hope (against all reason) that we shock the basketball world once more.

Halftime Update: Wow, that was a very well-played first half. I was especially impressed with how well we took care of the basketball, and handled UNC’s ball pressure. I think both teams are playing very well. We aren’t shooting that well, have foul trouble, and are only down 1 at the break. I’ll take that. The tight whistle – note that I didn’t say unfair, I said tight is going to make things difficult for us in the second half. I also think it’s time for everyone to realize that Engin Atsur isn’t just “gritty” or “smart” – he’s good. I think he deserves 3rd team all-ACC honors.

10:24 Update:Wow, I thought Sid didn’t look good at the end of the half. Turns out, they’ve taken him to the hospital (flu-related dehydration). Very fortunate that UNC Hospital is extremely close to the Smith Center. He’s in good hands. The game is getting out of hand.

Final Thoughts: When Sid left for the hospital, you had to think our chance was over. We have too narrow a margin of error as it is – we can’t lose our coach at halftime. Dennis Horner makes a nice shot (take that one more, kid!) at the end to cancel Wes Miller’s dick move and keep the final margin under 20. In essence, it was like the GT game against a much better opponent – the Pack just couldn’t withstand 40 minutes of ball pressure with such a shallow bench. Down the stretch, we couldn’t shot, pass crisply, defend, or rebound. No legs. It was borderline criminal for Towe to leave Atsur in the game for that many minutes with the outcome decided. We need him at full strength on Saturday. Your final score – UNC 83, NC State 64.

Agree with the 3rd team All ACC for Atsur. I think this is the best game I’ve ever seen him play.

I have the feeling that we are doing it with mirrors so far. Need to get Ben involved in the offense. Otherwise, I don’t know where the points are going to come from. Fells is not having one of his shooting games so far. If we survive the first ten minutes of the second half with the lead, we will win the game. The jacket has major mojo.

    I AM LOVING THIS!!!

Fells has got to keep shooting until he GOES OFF!!! I was afraid that if he didn’t hit early he’d fade into oblivion. Lowe has got to wake his ass up during this halftime!!! HORNER, play in position and stop reaching on D, most of all…SHOT THE F’N BASKETBALL!!!

Does anyone know the team foul numbers? Seeing as how we are playing there, i guess it could be a whole lot worse. I’m hoping Sid’s red will pull us through. Speaking of which, Roy’s tie is ugly as fuck!

Did anyone else see the guy go over Costner’s back on the rebound off a missed freethrow…..resulting in a tarhole 3 pointer.

    I probably shouldn’t post this….but I will anyway:

Two of the three UNC teams that Herb coached against were not nearly as good as this year’s UNC team….and he was 0-6 against RW. In 2004 with his best team at State, Herb was the only coach not to beat UNC that year. Need I bring up the disaster that happened in Raleigh last year?

After seeing how hard this State team is playing against UNC, just the thought of all of the BS arguments from the HSSS crowd just makes me furious. Now someone explain to me again why State couldn’t possibly get a better coach than Herb…..

And don’t even get me started on that $#@!-wipe Doyel.

I agree about the Deanster—looks like he got a new leather face. He should use some saddle soap on it to get a nice sheen going.

The ref’s aren’t doing that bad. I few missed calls, but I like the pace of the game and the fact there aren’t too many whistles. Atsur is playing huge. You can tell he and Grant really want this game. The rest of the guys just need stay focused and keep running there stuff. It will be there for Costner and Fells in the second and they’ll need to hit some open shot to keep up. Everyone is doing fantastic, and I especially love it when Horner tries D-ing up Wright. He is so outmatched but is fearless (think he just got another foul called on him).

Keep junking up the D. Until they beat it inside or hit some easy threes I would stick to it.

I hate to get too excited, but I really think we have a chance in the ACC Tourney this year. It kind of reminds me of the Herb era . . . we always did well (finals) even though our regular season was average. All of this NCAA tourney talk is just getting me depressed, yet hopeful.

    Come on red jacket . . . . . .

Damnit VaWolf, I wanted to watch the second half, but since you started it, now I have to sit here and type bad things about Herb. 😉

I think roy tried to counter Sidney’s red coat with a gay pride tie. I mean, no offense to any homosexual people on here but that tie seriously looks like one of the rainbow bumper stickers you see around but tackier.

    Anyways, about the game…

I think Atsur is getting really frustrated with the constant handchecking from Frasor and Miller. His foul at around the 4 minute mark was complete frustration and then i clearly saw him scream “bullshit”..

I’ve personally liked Grant’s game so far. Costner has looked great as well. Atsur is on fire from three.. I want to see Fells step up like last game with the 3’s. That’s probably the one thing missing from last game to this game along with McCauley not really scoring too much.

Not too shabby so far. I will definitely take being down by 1 at the half but I see UNC pulling away after the foul trouble really kicks in from McCauley and Costner.

Oh Shit–Sid stayed in the locker room.

  14. gumbydammit 02/21/2007 at 10:23 PM #

Am I wrong that every time I listen to a Billy Packer-commentated game, I just have this overwhelming urge to beat him to within an inch of his life? God, I hate that arrogant fackwud.

As for the officiating, it sucks going both ways, but that still favors the Holes, as their bench is deeper. Quit calling the ticky tack BS and let them play. That foul on Grant’s block was purely a “predisposition” foul – as soon as Grant commited to challenging the shot, the foul was a foregone conclusion in the ref’s mind.

The ACC is the only conference in the country that calls”attempted” fouls….

  15. highstick 02/21/2007 at 10:23 PM #

Va Wolf, you are welcome to say that! If anybody doesn’t understand why we didn’t need a new coach after watching 3 halves against UNCX this year, they’ll never get it!

This team is playing hard, but the fouls and the refs scare the hell out of me in the 2nd half.

    oh god sid is sick..

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 02/21/2007 at 10:24 PM #

must have the norovirus. I had it a few weeks back and it’s no fun — fever and both ends running

  18. vtpackfan 02/21/2007 at 10:24 PM #

Smoke and mirrors, pick and roll, junk D, give it all to me. I just want to keep the dream alive.

Love how Sid bought minutes in the first half with Horner and Neiman.

Whatever happened to the 1-3-1 defense with Horner at the top that the Pack ran earlier in the year. Horner was really able to get a lot of deflections with his length in that defense.

McCauley is going to have to become a factor for State to win this game.

  20. highstick 02/21/2007 at 10:25 PM #

BS, naw, he didn’t say that! That was Turkish for “Yo Mamma Sucks Ref”!

  21. packk 02/21/2007 at 10:25 PM #

NOOOOOOOOOOO! Did I just jinx Sid?? Please get back out there!

  22. WolfPup35 02/21/2007 at 10:25 PM #

    3 on Ben

  23. PurplePeopleEaters 02/21/2007 at 10:26 PM #

Yeah I know a virus and flu has been gong around at least where I live.. Towe’s been a head coach, I’ll trust him for the rest of the game. It really hurts not to see sid standing there though.

  24. VaWolf82 02/21/2007 at 10:27 PM #

I have to sit here and type bad things about Herb.

To be honest, I’m more upset at the HSSS crowd and the Idiot Doyel than I am Herb. He tried his best….it just wasn’t good enough. It’s the idiots that bother me.
