Lowe Wins 3rd in Row vs UNC (Updated 2/4)

Two games this week…two wins over teams sitting in first place of the ACC!

Sidney Lowe “gets it”. 15 point underdog stuns UNC in Raleigh. What a difference a year – and a coaching change – can make! We had an entry open during the game that has some of our comments about the game.

* After finishing his playing career with two straight wins over Carolina in 1983, Sidney Lowe starts his coaching career by successfully defending NC State’s home court with a win over #3 ranked UNC-Chapel Hill.

* Every media outlet in America has mistakenly misquoted Sidney Lowe’s record against UNC today. I don’t know what our SID has been doing all day, but can SOMEONE please get in touch with ESPN (and other media outlets) and explain to them that Sidney Lowe’s playing days incuded more than just one win vs the Heels? This mistake is everywhere! (Kind of like how Philip Rivers ‘never lost a bowl game’ despite the fact that State lost to Pitt in the Tangerine Bowl). The mistake was even misquoted at halftime of the radio broadcast of tonight’s Maryland-Wake Forest game. Jeez.

* Speaking of media outlets:
(a) This link will take you to a consolidation of stories on the game.
(b) this link will take you to the N&O’s blog that has a host of links related to the game.
(c) This link will take you so a super audio slide-show done by JP Giglio at the N&O.
(d) This link includes 48 great pictures from the N&O.

* Like Jim Valvano used to do, Coach Lowe wore a red blazer for the occassion that he called “special” in his post game radio comments. Special? You mean it isn’t just 1/16th of the conference schedule? You can get a nice view of the attire here.

* In addition to notching the biggest win the ESA/RBC’s history, the Wolfpack have won consecutive games against Top 25 opponents for the first time since 1990-1991 (Georgia Tech, UNC-CH) .

* Carolina is the highest-ranked opponent State has beaten since the Pack’s win over third ranked Wake Forest in the 2005 ACC Tournament. You will remember that as the game that the Demon Deacons played without All-American point guard Chris Paul who was suspended for punching Julius Hodge in the groin in the team’s regular season finale the previous week.

* Additionally, Lowe joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as NC State coaches since Everett Case who beat Carolina in their first game.

* Coach Lowe is now 2-1 vs Big Four opponents with return games (vs Wake, @ UNC) remaining on the schedule. Another win vs a Big Four team this year would get Coach Lowe three wins vs Big Four opponents in one regular season (in five games). The Wolfpack’s last head coach didn’t win his third regular season game against Big Four competition until his third season despite having six opportunities per year instead of five. This link will take you to an old entry (2005) related to recent performance against the Big Four.

* Many analysts are already talking about the Wolfpack’s win with terms like ‘passion’ and ‘hunger’ and ‘desire’. What a WONDERFUL testimomy to Coach Lowe’s intensity and ability to communicate to his players. It has been more than ten years since anyone has remotely associated a win by Stat to simple motivation and passion. WRAL’s blog says that “The Pack wanted it more”

It was an unbelievable day for Lowe, who was wearing a bright-red blazer. It was a good omen. As much as anyone, he knows how badly N.C. State fans want to beat Carolina, and he delivered in his first game against the Tar Heels.

* The win also saw students take to Hillsborough Street for one of the first times in years. Although the ‘celebration’ pales in comparison to the old days, it is nice to see it happen. Video (and other related items) can be found at WRAL-TV5.

* Loved these quotes not to be ignored.

* This national story from Fox Sports included a better acknoweldgement of the big picture than most national outlets typically get right:

Lowe was hired to win these types of games. He was the point guard on the Jim Valvano-coached Wolfpack team that beat North Carolina twice as a senior in 1982-83 and went on to win an improbable national championship.

In recent seasons N.C. State’s fan base grew increasingly frustrated with consistent losses to rivals Duke and North Carolina under coach Herb Sendek, who went 8-38 against those schools during his 10 seasons before leaving for Arizona State.

“It means (Lowe) is going to be around here for a long time,” Costner said. “You (media) guys can look forward to keep interviewing him, keep talking to him and just see Wolfpack basketball take off again.”

* To the ‘younger set‘ of Wolfpack fans whose memories don’t extend pass 1990, we’d like to say welcome to reality. THIS is what it is supposed to be like.

Nothing could be finer than defeating Carolina.
I was just so glad Dykes had to interview Sidney and co in that mass of humanity. Darn straight we’re passionate about hoops. We brought passion to the ACC. What a great game! Amazing.

When the team had that autogragh signing thing at the GO PACK store in crabtree, I spoke to Sid, first thing I said to him was ” I hope you guys play well against carolina” Sid winked at me with a sparkle in his eye and said “We’ll get em, we’ll get em” . . . by golly he meant it

This game was so good that it might have made my wife a NC State hoops fan. And she freaking HATES basketball. But she really got into today’s action.

As I told her – this is what basketball CAN be.

I am now 100% sure that I’d rather listen to Woody Durham and Bob Harris call an NCSU game than have to listen to Jimmy Dykes.

There is nothing better than listening to Woody when UNC loses.

I saw the tarhole pregame deal and was mystified also. Looked like some kind of gay/geek dance routine. I guess they were trying to scare us or something. Bizarre.

I told my son (through my laughter) “that was the gayest thing I have ever seen”

  7. doug 02/03/2007 at 9:29 PM #

There was way too much blue in the lower bowl today

Boy it feels good to be back competitive. Excellent coaching, players showed heart and would not quit. Only mistake I think Coach Lowe made was not pulling Atsur out when there was a dead ball with under a minute left in the half so he would not pick up his third foul, credit to Lawson for taking him to the hole and picking it up. Very impressed with Courtney Fells post game interview. Not only did he answer with “yes sir” twice, he said even though he was not from N.C. he learned what the rivalry meant when the heel came over last year and beat us by 20. What a great game and what a joy to see the students “take the floor.” The Pack is Back!

OK, now that I’ve smoked the $16 Opus X and had a couple glasses of 12-year-old Scotch, I can say

    IT’S STILL SWEET

You know what else is sweet? Hearing the UNC Coach complaining about his team’s LACK OF PASSION after a loss in the rival game.

What a difference from the last times these two teams met in Raleigh. Last year, WE were favored to win, we were the ones who suffered from a lack of passion on the court. Now it’s they’re turn to wonder where the passion went.

I’ll tell you what — we brought the passion back. This is how a team is supposed to look at home against their rival! Fired up and hungry!

  13. DaPackster 02/03/2007 at 9:55 PM #

Today’s effort reminded of the Stormin Norman and Jimmy V teams of the past. It has been 16 years since we won back to back games against ranked teams. This team plays with heart and passion. What a difference a year makes when our veteran team was embarrass by a bunch of freshmen from Chapel Hill. Today was like a championship fight. We went face to face, unlike the Princeton offense. We took the fight to unc and was the agressor. Sidney used his timeouts perfectly. Carolina never went on a run and we control the tempo. Astur is our heart, without him we struggle. I thought if Sidney went .500 and we possibly got in the NIT, that would be a great year. Lets take one game at a time.

After the victory a bunch of us…total strangers to each other…got to talking in the Champions Club. We all commented that this was as close to the Houston game (circa 1983 if I recall…). It was sweet..

YES…the RBC really ROCKED this time…

YES…there was WAY TOO MUCH BLUE in the lower prime sections. When I bought my LTR seats about a year ago, I wanted down THERE…I was told that it would take $100K to get in…NOW HOW THE HELL did ALL the UNX BLUE fans get there…? I think that the Wolfpack Club should NOT allow folks in BLUE in the RBC unless they can prove some relationship (married, divorced, brother, sister, etc.)…SERIOUSLY….WHERE did they get their tickets.

YES….SIDNEY IS THE MAN. The quote from the V man was great. Sidney fully understands. I bought my LTR’s BEFORE HERB LEFT…and NOW, they are GOLD…Sydney was obviously brought to us by a higher power. I think that same higher power had a hand in the win today. I remember seeing the ref wipe pasta sauce off the ball on a few shots in the Michigan game…He had to do the same today. Jimmy V was watching over us today…THIS IS A SIGN…

JIMMY V’s NAME HAS TO BE ON THE COURT…START A MOVEMENT….EMAIL EVERYONE….SOMEONE NEEDS to start a site.. JimmyVCourt.COM…I’ll contribute to the registration fee…

  16. Charles Kuralt 02/03/2007 at 10:22 PM #

For the last time, those people wearing blue got their seats from their corporate employers who have LTRs in the lower level. By LTRs, I mean their company has tickets to every event staged at the RBC.

These employers couldn’t find NC State if you gave them a map to Hillsborough Street.

I knew there was a reason I plunked down the $$$ for a big screen TV and ESPN Full Court. The scene in our game room was out of control. As much as it pains me to say it, my 14 year old said at the begining of the week that we would beat VT and Carolina this week.

I apologize to Costner for calling him soft (actually Charmin) after the Duke game. He played two very tough games this week.

Sidney coached his tail off today, but the players executed better and fought harder than they have all year. This may well be a new begining for Wolfpack Basketball. His biggest challenge so far will be to get these guys ready to play Ga Tech.

This one also had its signature dunks, though none as good as Clyde The Glide to Hawkeye or Sidney to Thurl.

The Kendall Gill rule will come in to play for us if we can work our way onto the bubble. We still have a long way to go before we can have any of those conversations very seriously.

Sidney Lowe – I think this guy can coach.

The light is back in our Wolpack hearts.

And Fowler just lucked into it.

“DEAR EVERY MEDIA JACKASS BACK IN APRIL & MAY 2006:

“WE CAN’T EXPECT TO COMPETE WITH” WHO?”

I could not have said it better.

I do not think I have seen a coach pull the strings like Lowe just did. The man knows basketball.

  20. highstick 02/03/2007 at 10:59 PM #

Somebody finally mentioned his name….. Fowler! Wonder what is going through the man’s mind at this point. Certainly this cannot be happening! We cannot expect to compete with Carolina and Duke! No way, cause “I know basketball”! Or was that “basketweaving”??

What a night! I went to a fellow business associate’s home for his birthday, Carolina grad, of course. Picked up another of our friends, another Carolina grad! Then I got to watch the Pack kick some butt in their presence!!!!!!!!! It don’t get any better than this!!!!!!!!

Now I can watch replays all night long!!!

CONGRATS TO SID AND THE TEAM.

The coaching staffing has done a great job since the UVA loss. The contribution of Astur is huge.

And . . . I assure you every UNC will say “you guys shot 60%” . . . but that does not tell the true story. We outplayed them just like we outplayed Va Tech.

This team is solid and has the ability to beat anyone in the ACC . . . we’ll see how the remaining games turn out.

The REAL RIVALRY is coming back. UNC truly hates State, and they’ll show that hatred when we start consistently beating them!

  22. Rochester 02/03/2007 at 11:14 PM #

I don’t feel like such an optimistic dreamer any more for saying we should be able to win 5 ACC games earlier this year. Admittedly, a couple weeks ago I wasn’t too sure about that. But if Atsur had been healthy all along, well, who knows …

This game will be the building block that makes our season a success. I wish we had another shot at Duke. Those boys need a dose of humility.

  23. highstick 02/03/2007 at 11:28 PM #

Gee Whiz, just read some of the Tar Heel blogs and they sure think that the referees stiffed them. I didn’t see Hansborough’s T, but I’m sure he never has committed a foul! LOL!!!
