Lowe Wins 3rd in Row vs UNC (Updated 2/4)

Two games this week…two wins over teams sitting in first place of the ACC!

Sidney Lowe “gets it”. 15 point underdog stuns UNC in Raleigh. What a difference a year – and a coaching change – can make! We had an entry open during the game that has some of our comments about the game.

* After finishing his playing career with two straight wins over Carolina in 1983, Sidney Lowe starts his coaching career by successfully defending NC State’s home court with a win over #3 ranked UNC-Chapel Hill.

* Every media outlet in America has mistakenly misquoted Sidney Lowe’s record against UNC today. I don’t know what our SID has been doing all day, but can SOMEONE please get in touch with ESPN (and other media outlets) and explain to them that Sidney Lowe’s playing days incuded more than just one win vs the Heels? This mistake is everywhere! (Kind of like how Philip Rivers ‘never lost a bowl game’ despite the fact that State lost to Pitt in the Tangerine Bowl). The mistake was even misquoted at halftime of the radio broadcast of tonight’s Maryland-Wake Forest game. Jeez.

* Speaking of media outlets:
(a) This link will take you to a consolidation of stories on the game.
(b) this link will take you to the N&O’s blog that has a host of links related to the game.
(c) This link will take you so a super audio slide-show done by JP Giglio at the N&O.
(d) This link includes 48 great pictures from the N&O.

* Like Jim Valvano used to do, Coach Lowe wore a red blazer for the occassion that he called “special” in his post game radio comments. Special? You mean it isn’t just 1/16th of the conference schedule? You can get a nice view of the attire here.

* In addition to notching the biggest win the ESA/RBC’s history, the Wolfpack have won consecutive games against Top 25 opponents for the first time since 1990-1991 (Georgia Tech, UNC-CH) .

* Carolina is the highest-ranked opponent State has beaten since the Pack’s win over third ranked Wake Forest in the 2005 ACC Tournament. You will remember that as the game that the Demon Deacons played without All-American point guard Chris Paul who was suspended for punching Julius Hodge in the groin in the team’s regular season finale the previous week.

* Additionally, Lowe joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as NC State coaches since Everett Case who beat Carolina in their first game.

* Coach Lowe is now 2-1 vs Big Four opponents with return games (vs Wake, @ UNC) remaining on the schedule. Another win vs a Big Four team this year would get Coach Lowe three wins vs Big Four opponents in one regular season (in five games). The Wolfpack’s last head coach didn’t win his third regular season game against Big Four competition until his third season despite having six opportunities per year instead of five. This link will take you to an old entry (2005) related to recent performance against the Big Four.

* Many analysts are already talking about the Wolfpack’s win with terms like ‘passion’ and ‘hunger’ and ‘desire’. What a WONDERFUL testimomy to Coach Lowe’s intensity and ability to communicate to his players. It has been more than ten years since anyone has remotely associated a win by Stat to simple motivation and passion. WRAL’s blog says that “The Pack wanted it more”

It was an unbelievable day for Lowe, who was wearing a bright-red blazer. It was a good omen. As much as anyone, he knows how badly N.C. State fans want to beat Carolina, and he delivered in his first game against the Tar Heels.

* The win also saw students take to Hillsborough Street for one of the first times in years. Although the ‘celebration’ pales in comparison to the old days, it is nice to see it happen. Video (and other related items) can be found at WRAL-TV5.

* Loved these quotes not to be ignored.

* This national story from Fox Sports included a better acknoweldgement of the big picture than most national outlets typically get right:

Lowe was hired to win these types of games. He was the point guard on the Jim Valvano-coached Wolfpack team that beat North Carolina twice as a senior in 1982-83 and went on to win an improbable national championship.

In recent seasons N.C. State’s fan base grew increasingly frustrated with consistent losses to rivals Duke and North Carolina under coach Herb Sendek, who went 8-38 against those schools during his 10 seasons before leaving for Arizona State.

“It means (Lowe) is going to be around here for a long time,” Costner said. “You (media) guys can look forward to keep interviewing him, keep talking to him and just see Wolfpack basketball take off again.”

* To the ‘younger set‘ of Wolfpack fans whose memories don’t extend pass 1990, we’d like to say welcome to reality. THIS is what it is supposed to be like.

The Giant is AWAKE!!!!! GO PACK!!!!

  2. tractor57 02/03/2007 at 6:39 PM #

What a performance! No not perfect but the team always had an answer for whatever – that is very much like the ’83 team. Job well done! Celebrate tonight and then get back to work – there is more to be done.

I also think we should give the game ball to Haith as without his performance of the other day Hansbrough would have not been called for the T. Notice the refs? I didn’t either except for that call – a great change from the norn of the season in the ACC.

  3. PurplePeopleEaters 02/03/2007 at 6:43 PM #

Wow… UNC finally has a game where the calls aren’t in their favor and THEY complain?? We had our fair share of hand checks and touch fouls called against us as well. What a bunch of freakin sore losers. We won. Get over it. Just because Hansbrough finally got called for a travel and got T’d for his crap..

    Valvano Lives!!! …in Sidney Lowe.

Actually this reminds me more of the upsets that Les Robinson used to pull off against UNC when we had no business even keeping it close.

BTW…Saw A. Brackman in the crowd watching the game…I wonder if he’s thinking twice about his decision to quit the team.

    Congrats PACK!!!

    jamieinkorea:

I am currently in Guadalajara, Mexico. The only thing they know about the ACC is the Carolina blue merchandise that every one seems to have.

I listened to the game through here: http://www.teamline.cc/teampage?&DB_OEM_ID=9200&teamcode=5520

I called the phone number they give on the web page using Skype:
    http://www.skype.com

Then I watch the box scores at sports.yahoo.com.

It cost me $5 + $0.021 a minutes. Not bad for such a great game.

    GO PACK!

    89 wolf..

Couldn’t brackman technically return next year once he gets drafted by the MLB?

DEAR EVERY MEDIA JACKASS BACK IN APRIL & MAY 2006:

“WE CAN’T EXPECT TO COMPETE WITH” WHO?

Great win, Lowe & co. Wow. I’m going to dust off a celebratory cigar that I’ve had for FAR too long.

    GO WOLFPACK!

I’ve been waiting my whole life for nc state to punch unc in the mouth, and it happened today.

  9. 89wolf 02/03/2007 at 6:55 PM #

PPE…That’s a good question. Maybe someone else can answer that.

  10. Astral Rain 02/03/2007 at 6:56 PM #

No MLB team would let him play hops for us…

Can’t say enough about the importance of number 14. To me, it’s a whole new season now, all bets are off. I won’t be surprised by anything this team does. I was completely resigned to being happy with a 20-point loss, but this team has more heart than anyone. They can talk all they want about Hansbrough’s will, but we’ve got a whole team full of guys with more.

    wow

Today was the confirmation of what many of us have thought all along. Sidney Lowe is the right man at the right time for our school. He completely and thoroughly outcoached the great Roy Williams. IMHO this was the biggest mismatch upset we’ve had over UNC since 1972 when TB was a sophmore. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a win anymore than this one and I can remember one helluva lot of great wins. Congratulations Coach Lowe, staff and team. Job well done!

  13. PurplePeopleEaters 02/03/2007 at 7:04 PM #

Well Samardzijia did play football after getting drafted by the cubs.. If he really wanted to go for it, why not?

  14. csmac55 02/03/2007 at 7:04 PM #

As a younger wolfpacker, I’ve been subjected to listening to UNC and Duke fans brag about their programs my whole life. I’ve never known what it feels like to be better than them. All I can say is, IT FEELS GOOOOOD!

Courtney Fells played like a MAN today. So did Ben.

I really hope Stu Scott does the highlights on Sportscenter tonight. That would be a beautiful thing.

    GO PACK!

  15. old13 02/03/2007 at 7:07 PM #

    btw

    THE ‘PACK IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Packster 02/03/2007 at 7:16 PM #

Without a doubt…this is one of the greatest Wolfpack basketball wins ever. History will show that it was on this day that things began to change for Wolfpack basketball. Today was the first win against the Tarheels in a new era. The Sidney Lowe era. From this point forward, the machine is in motion to return this game to its status as THE rivalry.

Jimmy Dykes kept his mouth shut today. All the emails must’ve had an effect. Just wait until Lowe gets his recruits in Raleigh. I watched the UNC/NCSU semi-final from the ACC tournament on ESPN Classic Friday afternoon. I saw Valvano outcoach Dean then. I saw Lowe outcoach Roy today. What a brilliant future we have ahead of us.

  17. Mr O 02/03/2007 at 7:24 PM #

I even went to Hillsborough St. Unbelievable win for NC State.

  18. Pack Strength 90 02/03/2007 at 7:28 PM #

The season is already a success. Now everyone knows why Roy and Mike were so dissappointed when Herb went west. They lost their sure thing.

Also, props to the previous poster here and whoever put the frank Haith video on the site. That brought the obvious bias to the forefront. You can continue to hear the blue croud cry when the game is called even. its tough when you go from 7 or 8 on the floor back to 5.

The team also played with more intensity and purpose than they have all year. They were running sets efficiently and seemed to be on the same page.

I work with an office full of Hokies and have quite a few tar holes as best friends. This has been a great week.

Thanks Sid and thanks Team. Keep the intensity and purpose. The pack still has a shot.

  19. Gene 02/03/2007 at 7:29 PM #

Stu Scott does the highlights on Sportscenter tonight.

After the game they cut to Hubert Davis, who was calling another game of their’s later in the evening…he forced a smile on his lips, but I could see the pain in his eyes, having to talk after this loss…

  20. grizzlyman 02/03/2007 at 7:30 PM #

Apropos of this win, Sindey Lowe is the balls. Go Pack!!!

  21. Gene 02/03/2007 at 7:31 PM #

Without a doubt…this is one of the greatest Wolfpack basketball wins ever.

I just wonder what a young kid watching this game is thinking about NCSU right now, when he sizes us up next to Duke and Carolina….

Big, big, big win on national TV.

  22. ShootingGuard 02/03/2007 at 7:33 PM #

    WOW!!

In the 2nd half, I had a bet going in my section about who would pick up their 4th foul first, Atsur or MacCauley. Most of us agreed that BOTH would pick it up before the next tv timeout at 8:00. Sure enough, MacCauley has a seat at 8 minutes and change.

Seeing us beat UNC with MacCauley on the bench while Hansborough got away with murder was extra great. Of course, Hansborough FINALLY got his due, and what a difference that makes, huh?

We were so out matched coming into this game, it was unbelievable. I have to be honest, I thought there was no way in hell we would win (I tend toward pessimism). But, like Valvano, Lowe surprised me.

If anyone had any doubts about the coaching change, those doubts were answered today. Herb absolutely sucked in the games that mattered most to us, losing 2 of 3 BADLY vs one of the worst Wake teams in history and dropping 2 of 2 vs one of the weakest UNC teams ever under a real coach (the Matt Doherty years don’t really count, we should have made major headway then, but we didn’t). Sid may or may not turn out to be the answer longterm, but, damn, he’s 1-0 vs Wake and 1-0 vs Superman Roy and ESPN-Nike-UNC. That in year 1 with minimal scholarship players / minimal experience / a hobbling senior combo guard beats the hell out of multiple 20+ pt blowouts at the hands of dismal Wake twice and Roy-UNC on your home court in year 10 with a bunch of seniors.

Sid Lowe broke out the red blazer. He definitely gets it. I was tearing up in the pregame because I knew the coach had laid it all on the table and felt the kids were going to bring it as well as a result. I still did not think they would win, but they did.

I don’t know what the rest of the Lowe era holds, but I know he will put forth his very best—he will embrace the past and swing for the fences with the future. That’s the only way to do anything in life anyway.

I have never seen so many former players at a game in 20 years. They must have felt it too. The spirit of V was in the house today, and it was special. It was loud. Was it Reynolds loud? I don’t care. In the “modern” era, after 16 years of hibernation, it was loud. It was incredible.

I’m not going to jinx us with any dreams about the rest of this season, but we beat all the no names and now we have a signature year 1 win as well as a top 25 win on the road, so 2 of my goals for the season have been knocked out.

I want more, obviously, and I know the coach and the players do to…hopefully, they won’t be too hung over vs GT…hopefully, we will keep building from here…

WTNY!! Well, not quite yet…El Sid just might have a few more arrows in his quiver…

  23. StateFans 02/03/2007 at 7:33 PM #

Did the students take Hillsborough Street, like us old school guys used to?

  24. tractor57 02/03/2007 at 7:33 PM #

There is no way anyone can diminish what Atsur means to this team. With him in the game it is amazing how different the team performs.
Take that you light blue babies!

[…] What a win by NC State! After being told for the better part of a decade that “it’s just another game on the schedule”, NC State showed both the heart and the smarts to beat #3 North Carolina in the RBC Center.  Sidney Lowe and NC State led the Heels for most of the game and held on down the stretch for a 82-77 victory.  The Wolfpack shot the ball at a blistering 60% including 53% from beyond the arc.  Courtney Fells was a big part of what NC State was able to do from the outside with 4 3-pointers and 21 points overall.  The game plan by Sidney Lowe was perfect with his low post players taking North Carolina’s big men away from the basket, leading to back door looks.  Wolfpack forward Ben McCauley finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 17 points.  But the biggest reason that NC State has now beaten two ranked teams in as many games is probably senior guard Engin Atsur being on the floor.  Atsur ran the offense at NC State’s pace throughout the game and dished out 10 assists along the way with 12 points.  Despite the Tar Heels rebounding advantage on paper(leading the nation in rebounding and rebounding margin), State was the better team on the glass(31-25) with Brandon Costner pulling down a game-high 11 boards.  Carolina’s depth never became a factor in the game.  The Tar Heels only outscored State 6-2 on bench points.  Tyler Hansbrough led North Carolina with 24 points and Ty Lawson registered a career-high 21 points, but neither stop the red tide washing out onto the court as time expired.  NC State snapped a six-game losing streak to their arch-rivals and Sidney Lowe brought home one of the most unlikely wins in this series.       […]
