N&O: Lowe gets scare, vows to change

Lowe, 47, was treated for dehydration, kept overnight and released Thursday morning. He said he left the hospital determined to take better care of himself — and to heed the words of UNC coach Roy Williams, who visited him in his hospital room soon after the Tar Heels’ 83-64 victory.

“He sat down and talked to me a little bit, just about the [ACC] and coaching in this league, at this level,” Lowe said. “You really have to take time out and get rest, or work out, or get away from it.

“He asked me, ‘What did you do for lunch today?’ I said I was working. He said, ‘Exactly. Take an hour and go work out, get away from it.’ He said it will wear you down. He said, ‘I know you as a player and I know you as a coach, and you’re going to work all the time.’ He was great.”

I have liked Roy for years, and the guy just keeps on earning little gold stars.

Man I wish I would have rolled up on him here in Wilmington.

I would have had to shake his hand but when I walked away I would have made sure he got a loud “GO PACK”.

You don’t think Roy softened the heart of the guy who more than anyone, wanted to get back to NCSU just to make the powder blues feel the old and familiar heat coming back out of Raleigh?

    Nah, never happen.

I think it’s important to remember that our hatred of other teams players, coaches, and fans really only exists in the sense of competition, even for Roy and K (although maybe not for Hansblow).

Neither Doh, Guthridge, or Dean really acknowledged the importance of the rivalry between State and UNC-CH. Roy has done so. He knows that the roots of the ACC were planted in Raleigh and that ACC Basketball is better off if State is an upper tier program. He also has tremendous personal respect for Sidney because of what he was able to do as a player. I have always felt like he was a much classier guy than Dean Smith ever was and he proved it here. This is the same type of thing as when Lefty got on our team bus to wish us well after the finals of the ’74 ACC Tournament. Frank McGuire and Dean Smith created more acrimony in the ACC than any other coaches in the history of the league.

I’m kinda hating Georgetown about right now, but that’s from way back and been going on with me for years and years anyway. I’m not saying that JT III did anything underhanded by swooping down on our commit when we were in limbo and ripe for the picking, or when that once promised scholarship just all of a sudden appeared out of thin air within a few days of Wright’s change on plans.

No, I’m not saying any of that at all.

Chances are probably good that Wright was going to Georgetown if they offered…it is close to home as he stated earlier. Don’t believe that the coaching change affected him that much…would you play for that other guy rather than Sidney…give me a break.

Georgetown seems to be getting several highly touted DeMatha players as well (in ’07 and ’08). I hope Sidney, Pete, and Quentin (as Ex-DeMatha players, can turn that around) The DeMatha track was a great one for us during the ’80’s.

HIghstick — The story about Terry Holland’s dog goes back a long time to when he coached at Virginia and did not get along with Dean (who did?) and I got it from the News and Observer. I’m sure the dog is dead but the feelings aren’t.

The cool part is, Roy didn’t do this for publicity. He did it b/c he RESPECTS SIDNEY. Which is cool, b/c that means that we have a GOOD COACH!!!!

[…] Yesterday’s discussion about Roy’s advice to Sid propmpted me to think a bit more about rivalries (particularly vs. UNC in basketball). I have pointed to Matt Doherty as the ideal UNC coach for State fans (incompetent, easy to hate), and Roy Williams is pretty much the anti-Doherty – which kind of sucks for us. Or does it? […]
