That Crittenden shot damn near killed me. Good thing I am only 33 – I would be blogging from the sky if I were much older. Will that turn the tide, or will the Pack withstand yet another Yellow Jacket run? Anyway, this is a great game. Dicuss.

8:16 – Well, this doesn’t look good. Tech in synch offensively for the first time maybe ever this ACC season. We could easily run out of steam.

8:21 – Grant has such balance when he drives the lane and keeps his cool. He has been outstanding tonight. Not sure he’s committed a turnover yet, either.

8:30 – OK, there’s the return of out-of-control Grant. Still, what heart we are showing. We keep taking punches and getting right back up. One note of caution – I think our entire rotation has either 2 or 3 fouls. That could get dicey.

8:34 – I would be highly remiss not to give huge props to Fells for his defense on Crittenden.

8:37 – Tech lands a huge flurry of punches.

8:41 – This time, we aren’t getting back up. Our legs are completely gone, and Hewitt is wisely pressing hard. I don’t see how we pull this one out. Damn it.

8:45 – Hell, Tech might even cover at this rate. Game over.

8:52 – Hewitt showing how you beat NC State – press, press, then press some more. We can’t hold up for 40 minutes. Not this year.

9:00 – Crittenden with the dagger, defying laws of physics.

9:03 – Too tired to block out. It helps to have a stud PG to break down the defense and still bleed clock. We are out of options.

9:05 – Gambling wolves howl – stop fouling!!!

9:08 – Pack beats spread, loses 74-65. Very ugly finish – we MUST wipe the slate clean and take care of Miami. A respectable finish and easy NIT bid is still within our grasp if we keep our composure. Remember, everything is gravy this year. And you got plenty of gravy on Saturday.

More from Jeff:
The Pack was up as much as 15 points in the first half but succombs to an 18-0 run (and some say horrible officiating) in the second half. State only scored 22 points in the second half.

Georgia Tech used nine players on the evening and the Pack primarily went with five plus some time from Bryan Nieman. It showed as the press killed State.

The Pack was beaten by the deficiencies that we all know exist on this team – lack of depth, a healthy ballhandler and a ‘go to’ guy for sure points when the offense dries up.

Honestly, I fully expected State to lose this game. I was actually very pleased that we got a road match-up against a good team as the follow-up to our Carolina win so that any let down would be to a good team. Had we played at Miami or Wake or somewhere very winnable after Saturday then the would have hurt a lot.

But, I expected to lay an egg; not play as well as we did for 30 minutes and then lose.

In the end, many of the major items that

IMHO, Saturday’s game at Miami is more important to the Wolfpack’s post season hopes than tonight’s game because a loss at Miami is SO BAD that it would crush any hope for an NCAA Tournament berth (if the Pack finds a way to get to 8-8 in the ACC) and would also take away one of the ‘hopeful/expected’ five wins that we need for an NIT bid.

Ugly game. The first half I was thinking that this was a different team and the turnaround on the season was starting now. Second half as everyone witnessed, was a different story. I don’t think we had the depth especially at PG to win this game with Atsur gassed…

This team is showing a lot to us this year. I still believe we can compete with any team on any night under lowe and maybe next year will reflect it better. Keep on truckin. Go pack!

As much as I was impressed by the way we took it to the Heels over the weekend, I’m equally as disappointed in the way we gave this one away tonight. Maybe we were just gassed, or a hangover, or whatever. But the team and coaching staff looked shell-shocked the last 10 minutes of the game. You’ve got to finish on the road. We didn’t compete to give ourselves a shot. Would I have expected a road win at GT to start the year? No. Likewise, would I have expected wins at VT and against UNC? No. Would I have expected GT to be battling it out just to finish in the top half of the year? No…I guess what I’m saying is, I’m damn proud of this team, but there is unlimited potential for improvement. That’s why these next years are going to be so great. Go Pack!

Tech def. deserves this win. They outplayed us when it mattered. Atsur looked like he was about to pass out. I wouldnt normally mind a technical either, to see some passion from our coach, but that really was the worst time to do it. Plus it wasnt necessary..maybe if he was arguing a missed call on a foul, but not for the shot clock. I really just think that our team together just ran out of gas at the same time, and they were lookin for anybody else to make a play, which led to numerous turnovers. I think this loss doesnt hurt us as much as most people would think though. Now our coaches know to do something different at the end of games like maybe not letting Atsur run himself to death, so this doesnt happen again. We still shouldve won, and its frustrating, but really im a State fan…Im used to it.

I agree with Woof woof, we are a very tired team who are playing with a PG who is about 70%. If Carolina had pressed us like GT has, we would not be smiling so good about the Carolina game. I don’t know what is with all you’ll who are blaming Lowe and the kids. We all new what the depth was and that it would affect us badly. It also would be nice to have another PG like Lawson or Crittenon, but we don’t and don’t blame Sidney for that, look west if you want to blame someone for that. We will be fine when we get some more guys in here next year and the year after that. So relax.

I’m glad to see people taking a balanced view of what happened here…

Just like up at UVA and up at WVA, we ran out of gas…and there was no home crowd to give us a lift.

Have to pat the coach and players on the back for coming out swinging as I was afraid this would be a hangover game…

Everyone thinks it’s a knock on Atsur when I say this—although it is NOT—but, if what UVA is doing doesn’t ring it loudly in your ears, this game, like so many others, just shows you the importance of having a blue chip, athletic, break-em-down lead guard running the show.

If we are going to get back to where we all want to be, we have to get back to having guards who are at least drafted by the NBA, especially at point. We had a nice run with Sid, Spud, Nate, Vinnie, etc., and we have to get back to that…

You really have to feel for those guys out there. They basically came off 2 days rest (not really since they flew in Monday probably) after an emotional week to go against a team that’s 12-1 at home with two All-Americans with one of em probably going to the NBA next year. The guys played their hearts out but in the end, their legs left them at the end. The officiating was also called loosely to let the players play, which worked to our disadvantage. It was a tough loss I guess because we were up most of the game only to blow it in the final 11 minutes, but BBall’s a 40 minute game and you gotta give GTech credit, they saw our fatigue and attacked us maliciously.

State needs to sleep on the flight home, come back, rest up for a few days and be ready to go down to Miami on Saturday. Miami is an extremely winnable game for us but we have to come out strong because they did beat GTech, even if GTech is horrible on the road, Sid has to stress that these kids rest up and be ready on Saturday.

This is what I thought the Carolina game would look like, and it’s amazing to me that every team doesn’t play us like Tech played us tonight. We put up a good fight, and this team undeniably has some really talented guys, but we’re just too thin. I would’ve loved to see a win here, but we’ve still got a pretty decent shot at making the tourney. We shouldn’t have trouble against Miami and Wake, and home games against Maryland and VaTech are winnable. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but 7-9 in the ACC with wins over UNC and at VaTech is a pretty decent case, especially when you factor in Engin’s injury. I feel like 8-8 or 7-9 with a tourney win would put us at a mortal lock for a bid. Anything less than 7-9 and we’re NIT-bound, barring a stunning tourney run. The amazing thing is that we’re even being talked about as a potential NCAA tourney team. A week ago, the NIT wasn’t even a sure thing, and nobody would’ve dreamed of having us in the March Madness picture. Gotta hand it to Sid, it’s turning out to be one heck of a year.

Tough loss. I’m still proud of the team. Having no bench is a killer anyway you look at it.

My biggest problem is the whining about the refs that is becoming commonplace here. I saw our guys almost murder Tech players and it wasn’t called. If I’m complaining about the refs, then I’m complaining about the wrong things. I had to hear from nearly every UNX fan that they were robbed against us, so…….let it go.

  11. BJD95 02/06/2007 at 10:46 PM #

For one, I think the game was officiated just fine. For the first 30 minutes, I thought we even got away with a few calls. It ended up right about even.

  12. DaPackster 02/06/2007 at 10:50 PM #

Where is all that bubble talk now. Beating VT and UNC brought out fanasty talk. We are not a top 64 team. We are capable of beating some good teams. We are a NIT Team and that is nothing to be ashamed of. Our program is in good shape and we are heading in the right direction. With the coaching change, long coaching search, lose 2 recruits, Brackman & Simmons gone, very little experience returning, and Astur’s injury. Who would have thought we would have won 3 acc games, beat Carolina, have a winning record, a chance to win 3-4 more acc games, and go NIT was possible. WE are overachieving.

  13. PurplePeopleEaters 02/06/2007 at 11:00 PM #

Agreed DaPackster. This is an NIT team that has overacheived in a huge way. I have to say that NC State B-ball has been fun to watch for the first time in a long time and that is a huge step in the right direction. We lost almost our entire starting 5 last year yet we’re still able to compete in the ACC and we beat our biggest rival. … that’s a good enough “moral victory” for me.

  14. VaWolf82 02/06/2007 at 11:01 PM #

I feel like 8-8 or 7-9 with a tourney win would put us at a mortal lock for a bid.

Sigh….no one pays me any attention. The attributes you just put forth would be about the same as FSU last year….and they didn’t get in.

There are fun to watch and I was amazed at our start tonight. To be ahead of GT after 30 minutes on their home court is unbelievable. I expected to lus to lose our last 3 games by double digits. These kids are working hard and they believe in their Coach. Any future recruits who have watch our last 3 games will definitely consider us. The emotional and crowd at the RBC against Carolina reminded of Reynolds in the 70’s and 80’s.

  16. hoop 02/06/2007 at 11:27 PM #

Wow. That was a collapse of epic proportions. What comes to mind is this. Are our bench players so amazingly bad that they can’t come in and give our starters a breather every once in a while? I’ll give Lowe the doubt on this one but an 18-0 run and our team was shell shocked, Coach Lowe didn’t handle it that well. Hopefully he can learn from this and figure out something.

As much as I hate to say it, that Tech foul was very costly and although you have to ride the refs occasionally, they were right in calling a T at that point. You just can’t come out on the court that far. I’m sure Coach Lowe knew this and probably wanted a Tech. I’m afraid that’s just not good coaching. I still think he’s a great coach. But come on Lowe!

Whenever someone complains about the officiating I tune them out immediately. Only losers complain about the officiating.

Fells and Grant are the two worst ballhandlers I have ever seen wear State uniforms. That includes Kenny Inge and Damien Wilkins.

Sid has got to find a few minutes for the reserves late in the first and midway through the second. I don’t care how bad the bench is, the starters can’t go for 40 and beat quality teams.

I never thought this team was going to the dance even after last week. Just to many holes on the team for anything but a trip to the NIT.

It seems McCauley didn’t touch the ball at all in the 2nd half.

    Miami is a must-win.

  18. xphoenix87 02/07/2007 at 1:12 AM #

VaWolf82 – Florida State also didn’t play half the year with their only returning starter injured, which is something they take into account. If the team wins 4 more games to get to 7-9, the mark will be 6-6 without Atsur, and 11-7 with him, which is a considerable difference. Florida State also only had 1 win over a NCAA tourney team, and that was the win over Duke. We have at least 2 wins over tourney teams, and to get 4 more wins by the end of the season we will almost certainly have to beat another. Given the Atsur situation and the top-to-bottom strength of the ACC this year, it’s my opinion that we would get a bid. This is all completely irrelevant if the pack doesn’t string together a few more wins, but it’s fun to see that we even have a chance at this stage of the year. Do I think we’re going to be dancing come March? Probably not. but it’s not out of the realm of possibility at this point.

  19. legacyman 02/07/2007 at 7:27 AM #

Had we dogged the first half then most would have said that we had an emotional letdown after our two great wins. We played great ball for the first half and then the wall hit us. It was obvious to most that the kids just totally ran out of gas. Nieman played some but Dennis got whammed in the nose and effectively taken out of the game…how that wasn’t a charge is beyond me. So we played five guys and rested Engin for about 30 seconds or so.

Once we got tired and GT started playing on top of Engin the game was over. Our passing was erratic and sometimes very weak but tired legs and tired minds will cause that.

All in all, if I had to choose between this game and the big one, guess which I would rather have…yep.

  20. Texpack 02/07/2007 at 7:34 AM #

These are exactly the kinds of games you should expect going into a season with only 6-7 guys. Horner gets his nose bashed and all of a sudden you’re down to 1 sub. Didn’t get to watch due to blackout here, but it sounded a lot like a group of inexperienced players who aren’t good ball handlers getting rolled by superior depth. This is also why this team is a real long shot for the big dance.

“For one, I think the game was officiated just fine. For the first 30 minutes, I thought we even got away with a few calls. It ended up right about even.”

The officials allowed alot of physicalness but were fair. It p[layed into GTs hands but we need to adjust better.

This game highlighted our lack of speed and depth. Good good of coahing by Hewitt as they just beat us. I was hoping to win this one but was not very confident. Let’s pull out the next one adn see what happened.

  22. Red_Terrors 02/07/2007 at 8:28 AM #

It was like hitting a brick wall last night. We were plain and simple tired and Ga Tech took advantage of that. The guys played their hearts out though, especially Atsur. I think having Horner in the locker room for most of the first half hurt us in the end. We couldn’t sub in the first half, so by the second half we were exhausted. I don’t think anyone beyond Neiman on the bench order would have helped us, especially with the ferocious D that Tech was laying on us.

We have over-achieved this year, and our players and coaching staff have done a fantastic job. I think with about 2 more quality players last night to fill the void, we would have won easily. We just aren’t deep enough, and thats no one’s fault on the team now (coach’s included).

  23. Wulfpack 02/07/2007 at 8:40 AM #

All the tourney talk is very premature. My hunch is that there will not be an 8-win ACC team to get a bid. It’s going to take 9. UNC, UVA, BC, VT and Duke are virtual locks. We may be able to grab two more bids given the conference’s strength/depth. Right now I think you’d have to go FSU and Clemson, though Clemson is clearly heading in the wrong direction at the wrong time. GT, Maryland and NCSU will battle it out to see if they deserve to be in the mix, but right now none deserve to go. But this will not be an eight-bid year. Take for example GT. How in the world can the committee justify sending a Yellow Jackets team that is currently 1-6 on the road this year? Not going to happen unless something changes fast.

  24. Mr O 02/07/2007 at 8:48 AM #

Vawolf82: Agree that we wouldn’t be a “mortal lock”, but FSU last year didn’t have a major injury like we have had with Atsur.

As far as the game, having no PG absolutely kills us. Atsur can play that role, but then having no other player on the court who can take the pressure off of him for part of the game and having nobody on the bench to give him a break made him a non-factor in the 2nd half.

I guess Herb figured he would just try and get by this year since Chris Wright was commited for next season. But in the grand scheme of things, we would have been in trouble at the PG position this year no matter what.

  25. choppack1 02/07/2007 at 9:04 AM #

    A couple of thoughts:

    1) Guard the guy right before the half – I wonder what happens if he misses that shot. Yea, it’s only 3 points, but that gave Tech a huge lift going into the half.

    2) This is the kind of game that was custom-made for Davis. Put him out there, let him bang and shove a little.

    3) Atsur was flat out exhausted. I hope he’s ready to go on Saturday, because he looked totally spent out there.
