That Crittenden shot damn near killed me. Good thing I am only 33 – I would be blogging from the sky if I were much older. Will that turn the tide, or will the Pack withstand yet another Yellow Jacket run? Anyway, this is a great game. Dicuss.

8:16 – Well, this doesn’t look good. Tech in synch offensively for the first time maybe ever this ACC season. We could easily run out of steam.

8:21 – Grant has such balance when he drives the lane and keeps his cool. He has been outstanding tonight. Not sure he’s committed a turnover yet, either.

8:30 – OK, there’s the return of out-of-control Grant. Still, what heart we are showing. We keep taking punches and getting right back up. One note of caution – I think our entire rotation has either 2 or 3 fouls. That could get dicey.

8:34 – I would be highly remiss not to give huge props to Fells for his defense on Crittenden.

8:37 – Tech lands a huge flurry of punches.

8:41 – This time, we aren’t getting back up. Our legs are completely gone, and Hewitt is wisely pressing hard. I don’t see how we pull this one out. Damn it.

8:45 – Hell, Tech might even cover at this rate. Game over.

8:52 – Hewitt showing how you beat NC State – press, press, then press some more. We can’t hold up for 40 minutes. Not this year.

9:00 – Crittenden with the dagger, defying laws of physics.

9:03 – Too tired to block out. It helps to have a stud PG to break down the defense and still bleed clock. We are out of options.

9:05 – Gambling wolves howl – stop fouling!!!

9:08 – Pack beats spread, loses 74-65. Very ugly finish – we MUST wipe the slate clean and take care of Miami. A respectable finish and easy NIT bid is still within our grasp if we keep our composure. Remember, everything is gravy this year. And you got plenty of gravy on Saturday.

More from Jeff:
The Pack was up as much as 15 points in the first half but succombs to an 18-0 run (and some say horrible officiating) in the second half. State only scored 22 points in the second half.

Georgia Tech used nine players on the evening and the Pack primarily went with five plus some time from Bryan Nieman. It showed as the press killed State.

The Pack was beaten by the deficiencies that we all know exist on this team – lack of depth, a healthy ballhandler and a ‘go to’ guy for sure points when the offense dries up.

Honestly, I fully expected State to lose this game. I was actually very pleased that we got a road match-up against a good team as the follow-up to our Carolina win so that any let down would be to a good team. Had we played at Miami or Wake or somewhere very winnable after Saturday then the would have hurt a lot.

But, I expected to lay an egg; not play as well as we did for 30 minutes and then lose.

In the end, many of the major items that

IMHO, Saturday’s game at Miami is more important to the Wolfpack’s post season hopes than tonight’s game because a loss at Miami is SO BAD that it would crush any hope for an NCAA Tournament berth (if the Pack finds a way to get to 8-8 in the ACC) and would also take away one of the ‘hopeful/expected’ five wins that we need for an NIT bid.

I think we still have a shot at this game. We hit our freethrows… get a stop here and there…. it’s going to be close.

  2. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:12 PM #

Seems like the average distance for their shot attempts this half has been about four feet.

  3. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/06/2007 at 9:12 PM #

can’t win if we don’t stop them.

  4. GAWolf 02/06/2007 at 9:12 PM #

    Welp. I didn’t factor in miracle jam-lay-up-things.

DUDE THAT SHOULD BE INTERFERENCE WTF???????

that was an “I Quit” shot by atsur

  7. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:13 PM #

Has Atsur scored? He’s played okay…but I can’t remember him hitting a bucket.

Disappointing loss, but let’s be honest with ourselves… had we won we’d all, me included, be pumping Sid as the next coming of Christ. It’s probably for the better to temper our expectations for this year and maybe even the next. It hurts to have to say that….

To Heck with tempering our expectations…this is college basketball, why else do we watch/talk about it if not to want to win.

  11. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:15 PM #

Sidney Lowe has GREATLY exceeded my expectations this year. We looked so horrifically bad in our exhibition games. I said that the only reason we weren’t picked lower is because they ran out of teams.

But…tonight was pretty bad. Any time you give up a 19-0 run in about five minutes, it’s bad.

Typical dog shit game by > at Ga Tech. I swear the officiating is consistent with the “Bobby Cremins Corollary to the Rule” that states that “visiting teams will get ass raped when playing Ga Tech so as to ensure they get their token .500 record and at-large seed.”

  13. branjawn 02/06/2007 at 9:15 PM #

Did the bench play at all this game??

  14. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:15 PM #

Officiating had NOTHING to do with it, Carolina-boy.

  15. GAWolf 02/06/2007 at 9:16 PM #

Beginning of the year… would you have expected a win on the road against Tech? Nah. The first half is a tough one to throw in the loss column, but the fact of the matter is this is one we all knew would be very tough to win.

  16. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:16 PM #

    And that’s it.

Tech deserved it. They thoroughly outplayed us.

  17. GAWolf 02/06/2007 at 9:17 PM #

Classy loss there at the end.

  18. Woof Wolf 02/06/2007 at 9:17 PM #

We are totally gassed. We came out and laid it all on the court. Except for Grants expected turnovers we played the best we could for the first 30 minutes. Anyone who doesn’t understand that needs to find another sport to watch.

  19. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/06/2007 at 9:18 PM #

I’m not going to disagree that at the beginning of the year no one would have expected a win at GT but that was the beginning of the year. We were on a great 2 game roll, played great for the first 36 minutes of this game, then BAM!!! You could see everything was gone and we didn’t have a go-to leader to put the team on his back and get us through that rough stretch.

  20. branjawn 02/06/2007 at 9:19 PM #

Did our bench log any meaningful minutes? I mean, don’t we have players that can at least play some D so as not to exhaust our starters?

  21. Charles Kuralt 02/06/2007 at 9:22 PM #

I don’t think “you people” understand just how bad our walkons are, Darrelll Davis ain’t ready either. You say how inadequate Ferguson is and the guys behind him are very, very bad.

  22. branjawn 02/06/2007 at 9:24 PM #

“you people”? What’s that mean? You’re right, I don’t know because I live in the mountains of New York! So I don’t get to listen and watch the games like most everyone participating on this thread. I even went and bought an XM radio just to listen to the State games, but the reception was lousy becuase I live between mountains. To me, watching State play is hitting refresh non-stop on the Yahoo box score for 2 hours.

  23. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/06/2007 at 9:24 PM #

^agree CK, horner is the only real bench player we have and he’s either having a bad stretch the last few games or he has a LONG way to go. I’m guessing the latter.

  24. vtpackfan 02/06/2007 at 9:25 PM #

Man I hope we can rotate a few players in against Miami this weekend. Good job by GT by taking absolute control of the game. They have a great home record this year for a very good reason. Congrats to Hewitt and his team.

Can only say that this has been an insane week and I’m glad that there was been some excitment during the cold snap of winter. Hopefully the team can regroup after this rough, exhausting game wiyh a very dissapointing outcome. They have a lot to be proud of this season and a very winable game coming up this weekend, followed by two tough home games next week (UMd & VPI).

Atsur is still not 100% by any stretch of the imagination, and he is still getting back into shape playing night in and night out again. We have no alternative to this, it’s frustrating to watch. But come on folks, let it remind you of how improbable the two wins prior to this were instead of deciding that this is somehow a bad performance.

The weakness in this team showed up – a lack of real depth. It was like they ran into the wall at about 10:00 mintues left.
I did see some real improvement in ball handling bvefore that point.
Disappointing – yes but it’s not like this is a big surprise.
Great effort just not enough left to finish the game.
