Getting Ready for the Goats – Can Lightning Strike Twice? (11:00 Update)

Especially since our shocking win in Raleigh, I have asked some of my more rational Hole fan friends about some of Roy’s curious tendencies. No, nothing about banging farm animals, but his strange strategy. You know, playing Wes Miller and/or Bobby Frasor down the stretch of close games – sometimes ahead of arguably his best player (Ty Lawson). Or his stubborn insistence that he shouldn’t press during road games except at the end of the game or trailing by a huge margin.

They have no explanation, and also cite the train wreck nature of UNC’s half-court offense. That shouldn’t be with the unstoppable Brandon Wright eligible to play – but it often is. So…the question looms. Can lightning strike twice? Hell, if a mensch (hat tip to Noah) like Les Robinson can beat Dean twice in one season, why can’t Lowe win two against Roy, despite being heavily outgunned?

Then reality sets in, and I start to dread 9:00. Roy doesn’t have any rules against pressing at home. I can still remember what GT’s press did to us, and their athletes are nowhere near as skilled as UNC’s. One of Roy’s redeeming qualities is his hatred of NC State (ask someone with access to Rams’ Club events), which is vastly preferable to the more common condescending nonchalance. However, that works against us here. Roy couldn’t understand his team playing with less passion last time out. How can those whippersnappers not get up for NC State? I am certain Roy has pounded that lesson home all week.

What can we do? Somehow convince UNC’s players that we’re really Virginia Tech. Or convince our players that UNC is really Virginia Tech. Both, maybe? In all seriousness, we at least have that scintilla of hope. Thanks, Coach Lowe. I can’t really dread 9:00, no matter what my brain says. I want to watch, and I’ll be proud of where we’re headed regardless of the final score. I enjoy the thought of Brandon Wright going pro, and Hansbrough trying to deal with McCauley and Hickson pretty much by himself, while Costner pops 3s when the UNC defense sags to help out.

Update: Here’s a hilarious, non-photoshopped picture of weasel-in-chief Dick Baddour, for your viewing/mocking pleasure. Hat tip to 850 The Buzz’ Joe Ovies.

    primacy

43 points, that’s more like it.

The only person Larry Davis screwed more that us was himself.

If rankings mean anything in this case, Johnson figures to be the choice over Degand to run the point next year. If he can’t handle the quicker point guards, Degand may have to play more against these teams. I still like the idea of teaching Fells to guard the opposing point guard. I think he is quick enough and his length could cause some problems for players like Lawson & Smith (Wake).

My issue with Gonzales is pretty simple – Are we trying to get him (don’t know that is the case) because he is really good or do Towe & Lowe not like what they are seeing in practice? Historically, spring additions don’t have a great track record at the big time level but BC got Tyrese Rice in the spring. How great would that be if we added a player of that caliber?

Maybe he’ll go with a white blazer for away games. Miami Vice was a great show.

I have to believe that the end of your first sentence, 2nd paragraph, may unfortunately be the case. Don’t want to repeat it though.

We’ve seen a very limited number inexperienced players being brought along this season, and now playing as real team . Based solely on that, we are really playing guessing games here. We have no idea of what scheme this coaching is setting itself up for when they have enough time develop their own style with their own players in place. We may be looking at five starting point guards, beginning of a new hybrid, the “SO” for crying for out loud.

Can I ever type a final sentence right? %#*@

we are one victory over another top 25 team away from a highly successful season—4 wins over top 25 opposition—5 conference wins—and a guaranteed minimum of a .500 overall record for this team would exceed expectations—as said in the text of the blog—we are headed in the right direction—and—it’s fun to be a pack fan again—in basketball—tonite ?—got to lock down # 5—piss off hansbrough—weather about five runs at key junctures—shoot lights out—and—make some clutch free throws down the stretch—have your couch ‘ready to burn’—just in case—i’ve put my wife on notice—none of the furniture is off limits tonite—go pack

I expected this team to not be in ACC basement & go to the NIT. I’ll expect a NCAA birth next season.

Gotta also remember guys, Pete Strickland is another guard that has been a college head coach — and I’m sure Quentin Jackson discusses things with them, too. Between those four and Harris, they know what they need, and what they’ve got. One thing we DON’T have is a guard to go up against a Lawson, Rice, Crittendon, Singletary type quick “true” PG. Fells is great on the perimeter, but those guys eventually can get by someone 6’5″ (even with his great length). At some point, you need a quick PG to make things happen. Notice during the games before Engin came back, if/when we got behind, it was GG trying to make things happen, and therefore, forcing alot of turnovers. You NEED a PG that can settle down the team and make things happen. When GG and Fells can play at the 2 and 3, the whole team is better. I think Johnson and Degand are BOTH combo guards — PG when NEEDED, but not true PG’s. Mays can play both, too. It’s tough to have too many quality guards — the 6-3 to 6-7 guys with ball-handling skills are major pluses, but they are not true PG’s. Hell, Vinny could play the point, but with Corch running the show, we had the true “Pasta Connection, baby”.

    Fells will be key tonight,

Fells defense will be a important as his offense. If he can guard Lawson, allowing Atsur to rest on defense a bit more, that’d be valuable.

Is Cedar Grove a hotbed for recovering crank addicts?

  11. CedarGroveWolf 02/21/2007 at 2:46 PM #

“I think Johnson and Degand are BOTH combo guards — PG when NEEDED, but not true PG’s”

Degand can’t shoot well enough yet to be a 2G & he is quick enough to guard the other team’s PG. Doubtful he’ll ever play the 2 here.

“Is Cedar Grove a hotbed for recovering crank addicts?”

huh? please try to make sense when posting.

  13. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 2:48 PM #

I actually think everyone’s defense will be MORE important than the offense. Again, the less they score, the less they can press. I think if we can hold down their scorer’s, that will give our scorer’s more confidence, too. I’ll be interested to see how deep Sid goes tonight. I think spelling some of the players (Fells/Grant) with Davis — solely for defense, might pay dividends. I’m not sure how confident Sid is with Davis’ ball-handling skills, though — i.e. can he break the press when needed and not turn it over?

Sorry about that last comment there CedarGrove, but I don’t remember seeing any of your predictions about the upcoming season back before “” up and scooted on out west. Did you expect to sweep VT, did you expect to beat Michigan, did you expect to beat UNC.

    Sure you did.

  15. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 2:52 PM #

Agreed — I doubt he’ll ever start at either PG or 2G. I think he’ll be a “back-up PG” and 2G. With our shooters (Costner/Fells) we don’t need the prototype 2G who can shoot because we’ve got a SF and PF that can shoot 3’s.

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I have a feeling that is why we are still looking for a PG for ’07.

“I don’t remember seeing any of your predictions about the upcoming season”

I posted them on another site when some were perdicting not even a NIT birth. Did expect to beat Mich & VT, not unc. Did expect to beat Mia.

    “I think he’ll be a “back-up PG” and 2G”

Again, can’t shoot well enough to be a 2G (SHOOTING guard) & he’ll start the season as the starting PG. Probably end up backing up Mayes.

The internets have ruled: let there be no red blazer tonight…

  18. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 3:23 PM #

The one thing he’s got going for him — if, in fact, it is a positive, is that he’s 2 years out of H.S. So he should have gained some experience — maybe his shot is a little better! I just love the name, though — Farnold…Back in the day, the Dukies would have had fun with that one. Truthfully, I’m hoping that Mayes and Gonzalez end up becoming another Singletary and Reynolds Combo — one can hope!!

  19. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 3:24 PM #

^^The internets have ruled: let there be no red blazer tonight…

    Where did this ruling occur??

  20. Rochester 02/21/2007 at 3:31 PM #

Minor, nit-picky thing, but it’s Mays (no e).

  21. redfred2 02/21/2007 at 3:32 PM #

Is Degand a threat to penetrate and can he finish when he does. I’m talking next season so Atsur abilities will be gone, but Grant, and on ocassion Costner, but mainly Grant is the only one who really forces it inside off the dribble right now. Having a 6’10,” 3 point shooter (man, am I, the hater, really advocating 6’10” perimeter play?) should open up the inside for either guard position to penetrate and score. That is, IF, they are surrounded by other players with enough confidence to pull the trigger, and are consistent enough scoring threats to worry and spread out the oposing D.

That’s why Ferguson and HORNER, need to start putting it up more right now. Tonight wouldn’t be too soon.

Somebody’s point on good defense being more critical tonight is maybe true, but we have a few players who allow the opposing defense to double team and don’t get into their heads when we have possession of the ball. You have to at least give the indication of being a threat to score, or you allow the defense to sag back, play tighter, and you make it much harder on your teammates to get any shots off.

redfred… I know you date me by a few years but you remind me of me and my friends sitting around a bar talking shit…

    always good for a laugh.

  24. highstick 02/21/2007 at 5:36 PM #

Red Blazer, heck break out one of Sloan’s old plaid sport coats in red! Seems like V had a couple too!

You cannot believe how “wired” I am for tonight. It’s much better to have a “feeling of hope” and a reason for that hope(called the first win over UNCX) that to be looking at this game with overwhelming futility!

We can win this game, just play ’em smart and listen to Sid’s coaching! I want to continue talking smack to the Tarholes the rest of the year!

  25. LRM 02/21/2007 at 6:59 PM #

just ONE win in that stretch of Mia, GT, and MD and we’d be in bubble talk right now. that’s frustrating, especially when three of our four wins have been against the ACC’s top two teams.
