Getting Ready for the Goats – Can Lightning Strike Twice? (11:00 Update)

Especially since our shocking win in Raleigh, I have asked some of my more rational Hole fan friends about some of Roy’s curious tendencies. No, nothing about banging farm animals, but his strange strategy. You know, playing Wes Miller and/or Bobby Frasor down the stretch of close games – sometimes ahead of arguably his best player (Ty Lawson). Or his stubborn insistence that he shouldn’t press during road games except at the end of the game or trailing by a huge margin.

They have no explanation, and also cite the train wreck nature of UNC’s half-court offense. That shouldn’t be with the unstoppable Brandon Wright eligible to play – but it often is. So…the question looms. Can lightning strike twice? Hell, if a mensch (hat tip to Noah) like Les Robinson can beat Dean twice in one season, why can’t Lowe win two against Roy, despite being heavily outgunned?

Then reality sets in, and I start to dread 9:00. Roy doesn’t have any rules against pressing at home. I can still remember what GT’s press did to us, and their athletes are nowhere near as skilled as UNC’s. One of Roy’s redeeming qualities is his hatred of NC State (ask someone with access to Rams’ Club events), which is vastly preferable to the more common condescending nonchalance. However, that works against us here. Roy couldn’t understand his team playing with less passion last time out. How can those whippersnappers not get up for NC State? I am certain Roy has pounded that lesson home all week.

What can we do? Somehow convince UNC’s players that we’re really Virginia Tech. Or convince our players that UNC is really Virginia Tech. Both, maybe? In all seriousness, we at least have that scintilla of hope. Thanks, Coach Lowe. I can’t really dread 9:00, no matter what my brain says. I want to watch, and I’ll be proud of where we’re headed regardless of the final score. I enjoy the thought of Brandon Wright going pro, and Hansbrough trying to deal with McCauley and Hickson pretty much by himself, while Costner pops 3s when the UNC defense sags to help out.

Update: Here’s a hilarious, non-photoshopped picture of weasel-in-chief Dick Baddour, for your viewing/mocking pleasure. Hat tip to 850 The Buzz’ Joe Ovies.

I concerned Roy is going to be wearing this bright as heck powder bluff blue blazer!

RF2 — concur. He looks like a competitor — maybe not the most polished, or the kind of PG that has gotten attention since he was a 9th grader, but a guy who will step up a sink the big shot(s) to win a game. A competitor — and I know that is what Sid, Monte, Pete and Larry would like to see in a Pack uniform! There’s something about being a fierce competitor that holds up under pressure, that you just can’t teach. As much as I would like the think Degand or Johnson may fill that role, I don’t think so. Johnson could be a good player, but at 6-5, I don’t think he’s going to be a slasher that will take it to the lane. I really liked what his HS Coach had to say also, that says alot – ’cause he’s coached some good ones.

Another big point — goes along with Defense is rebounding — we can’t let Wright and Hanbra take over and get a bunch of offensive boards. If we can limit them to one shot, we have a shot!

God I hope that Sid doesn’t wear the Red jacket tonight. Not a good time.

    TNCSU

Something in a Drew Neitzel, take charge type, would be nice.

On your second point, we absolutely MUST move our feet to block out and cut off the baseline.

We’re playing with house money tonight, boys. Already got one huge win over UNC this year and exceeded most reasonable expectations to this point in the season given Atsur’s injury. We can play with a nothing-to-lose attitude. Incredible that Sid got the team to play so loose in our first game with the Holes when the stakes were higher (home game, Sid’s first against UNC, etc.) and the pressure was on – a real testament to his abilities as coach.

UNC, on the other hand, has got to win tonight. If this Heels team gets swept by this Pack team, there will be hell to pay on the Hill.

^^^How about a Chris Corchiani type?? He was from FL, too!! The PG at Miami, Clemente, is doing well, too, but I think this kid is supposed to be better. We will see, I guess.

Concur, on the blocking out and cutting off the baseline.

Fells will be key tonight, along with Ferguson. If Fells will step up and make his presence known on the offensive end by going inside and slashing to the basket more, while picking up fouls from their bigs, and in addition to his outside shooting threat, it will make their defense think twice and open up the interior for Costner and McCauley. Grant will do it, the others just have to move with him and give him passing lanes, or position themselves for rebounds when he takes it inside.

Ferguson looked like he is beginning to go with the flow and not pressuring himself so much in the VT game the other night. It made him appear a little quicker and he may finally be gaining back some much needed confidence. If he would shoot, and hit early, that would add one more dimension for the heels to worry about.

Also Horner, let it fly when you get an open look young man!

Tony Haynes said he’d put money that Sid WILL be wearing the red blazer tonight.

Also, Sid has never been in the Dean Dome. Did V ever go to the Dean Dome? I don’t think so.

  9. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 11:23 AM #

I concur about Horner — he needs to let it fly when he’s open. I can’t remember him missing one in the past several games, but he only shoots it once per game. I agree about Fells. I really don’t think they have a good match-up against him. I still say he’s All-ACC before he leaves here. He’s starting to realize he’s our go-to shooter — and man, can he JAM it!!?? I hope he does wear it tonight — it shows that it is a big game — not just on our court, but WHENEVER, and WHEREVER we play Carowhina!

I’m thinking the R E D blazer will be much in evidence tonight. I’d bet good money on it, and I’ll be kinda disappointed if it isn’t. It may be considered as home court attire only though. NOT.

  12. BJD95 02/21/2007 at 11:33 AM #

Hey, I know I will wear the same thing I wore last time, and that’s just to WATCH. Don’t mess with the mojo factor…

Here’s a link to his Rivals page. Note, his “list” now includes NC State. It did NOT as of yesterday when I linked to the same site. Very interesting…..

“But Degand, who has not played a real game in two years, does not appear to the Pack’s answer at point guard”

Degand is at least the partial answer at PG next season I would think. If not, why was he brought here? He getting recruiting over already?

  22. redfred2 02/21/2007 at 12:12 PM #

That picture of Baddour can’t be for real?

  23. TNCSU 02/21/2007 at 12:16 PM #

Gene Keady once said, “Recruiting is a lot like shaving. If you don’t do it everyday you wind up looking like a bum.”

I like that one. FYI. Gonzalez is now on Scout with NC State listed, too.

Here’s a quick bit from a recent article on Scout.com about recruiting. I just cut out the info about PG’s.

“A quick glance across the best availables board reveals bad news. The point guard crop is especially picked over. Of the top 25 point guards in America, as rated by Scout.com, a whooping one remains on the board.

Jai Lucas is turning into America’s prospect. The Houston point man with super-guard genes has Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Maryland fans hanging on his every word. There’s even chatter that Iowa is trying to make a late push for the only real impact guard on the board.

Other emerging candidates at the position include high-scoring Bo Spencer out of Baton Rouge and Miami’s Javier Gonzalez.”

“Degand is at least the partial answer at PG next season I would think. If not, why was he brought here? He getting recruiting over already?”

I can sum that up two words…opportunity and depth.
