Florida State Game Thread (Updated with Post-Game Analysis/Ranting)

Today’s game is crucial for NC State’s post-season hopes. The Pack needs 1 more regular season to qualify for the NIT, and 2 wins would erase any doubt about receiving a bid. On a second front, there are ample ACCT seeding/cellar avoidance ramifications. A loss today pretty much ensures that State will be seeded no higher than 10th (with 12th still a distinct possibility). Wins over FSU and Wake would likely produce a 9 seed. As much as I’d like to set up a Friday date with VT instead of UNC, I think getting a higher seed looks better on paper (in terms of beating pre-season expectations).

Section Six has a good preview here. Short version – without Toney Douglas, the Noles have sucked. If we have our legs, I think we have at least a 50/50 shot to take these guys.

1:38 – I didn’t think we could play shittier than we did against Miami, but I was wrong. So far, this is EASILY the worst we have played on offense AND defense all season. Just pitiful.

Halftime – Coming out of halftime, the only starter on the floor should be Costner. Absolutely nobody else on this team showed up to play today. Send a message prior to the Wake game, that this kind of half-assed play is completely unacceptable. Caveat – Atsur’s play might be due to physical limitations rather than attitude.

2:09 – So far, the 2nd half is even worse. What a load of freaking crap this is. No fight, no effort, no pride to wear the uniform.

2:45 – Is Cliff Ellis mentally “challenged” – seriously? Gavin Grant is the king of garbage time. Would have been nice if he had done something while the outcome was still in doubt. Why are we risking further injury to Costner and Atsur? Complete lunacy.

End of Game – A fittingly humiliating end to a humilating game. Ben McCauley was invisible again, and has likely played his way out of all-ACC consideration over the last 2 games. Fells played as if he were stoned. Atsur was clearly way off, and the coaching staff stubbornly (and stupidly, IMHO) played him all the way, even after the outcome was clearly decided. We need the next game to qualify for the NIT and avoid last place, so it sure as hell better not come back to haunt us. Before the game the TV foofs were talking about FSU wanting the score in the 70s, and NC State wanting it in the 50s. In a way, that’s exactly what happened – Florida State 78, NC State 52.

Once again I have to say, it was much more difficult to watch a well rounded group of experienced players getting beat by less than 10 points (or 24 points on their home court last season), while playing a style that was not condusive to their talents, then watching this current and out manned group of KIDS struggling to get past their hang ups.

Rick – we run the flex, too. So does UMd – last night was the best I’ve seen them run it in years. BC runs it as well. Sendek was running some flex last night, but also some open post offense. I watched on several occasions as ASU ended up w/ a horrible look w/ the shot clock draining. It was like deja-vu – Team and staff well prepared, great effort, but doesn’t have what it takes to win.

I’m glad we have some new blood here. However, I guess my main concern is defensively. If you watched college basketball yesterday, you had a chance to watch Pitino, Calhoun, Coach K, Roy, Olson and Gary Williams coach. My one question for Sid would be – next year w/ more depth and speed at the guard spot, will we see more ball pressure. Will it be the kind of pressure we see from the elite of college basketball…

Now, Sid couldn’t play this way if he wanted to this year. The question is, next year, will he?

Oh I don’t disagree redfred2. I pulled out a lot more hair last year.

THe point I was trying to make with Sendek and his offense was no matter what you call it, it ends up like it did when it was here with bad last second threes. But I think you saw that as well.

No matter what I am glad we at least have some potential now.

You’d have to feel certain that Lowe will, and that he’ll have at least more speed and depth that will allow him to pressure the ball next season.

As far as ASU’s offensive style of play this season, I’ve only seen them once, but it was definitely a mixed bag on that night. I’d say it is a radical departure from the one cycle setting that he employed every time out while in Raleigh. Good for ” “. Great news for the ASU fans as well.

Rick – That may be part of his keep it close strategy rather than take first good look. W/ Sendek, you most of the guys definitely don’t get as much freedom. Their version of the flex was fairly deliberate.

One thing about Sendek – I think you know what you’re going to get for the most part. ASU hired a coach who has been at 3 Division 1A programs. I expect he’ll eventually have them battling for NCAA bids – but I also expect they’ll run into the same problems he ran into here. When it comes down to it and possessions count, Sendek will usually be very conservative.

embarrassing loss to say the least. Other coaches are starting to figure out our O sets.
We should be able to beat WF & secure a NIT bid. The NIT would be great experience for this young team.

“The VT and UNC games didn’t throw me off – I certainly don’t expect great results or performance every time out. I do expect more fight than we saw against Miami and FSU, though – especially given the stakes.”

Me too. I go to every game and get pissed off by every loss. I was so mad at the Maryland game that I nearly left because, until everything fell completely apart, we had a chance to step up and win that big game because Maryland wasn’t all that great that night either—we were just bad.

I don’t blame an individual loss per se on the holes in our lineup or the minutes played but do think these go a LONG way toward explaining a lot of our so-called “effort” and deficiencies on defense, etc. over the course of the season. Ben MacCauley hasn’t done crap the last couple games, but I don’t think anyone who has ever talked to him would call that not caring or not trying on his part (nor would you want to tell him that). Sometimes he, and other guys, are just not going to have it that night. Unfortunately, we have no other options. Not only do we not have options like UNC does, we don’t even have options like FSU does—FSU’s “scrubs” like Soto and Breeden would be major players in our rotation if they were at State this year. When we are able to muster it, we can beat the best. When anyone is off or worn, we can lose to the worst. Such “standard deviation” and “margin for error” will be reduced, although not completely eliminated, with more numbers in the future…especially if we can get some more “high numbers” like JJ Hickson…preferably some great and/or overachieving guards.

I have not read everyone’s short novels on the game but after a physical game at Chapel Hill on a Wednesday that turned into a big loss. A shallow team, no practice on Thursday, coach recovering from an emergency room visit, Friday prep day, Saturday early afternoon game at FSU, it is no surprise to me that the team looked awful. The stars where not aligned for the Pack that day.

“Some games I suppose are just more important than others. I have a hard time adopting that ideology. ALL ACC games are important, some are just super-important. Just b/c you beat two of the top teams in the league doesn’t give you any right to lay down against two of the worst”

All games are important. A team that gets into the mindset that some games are more important than others is prime for a flat start.

A brilliant man once said it is highly important that you maintain a daytight compartment to keep you from being too excited or too lazy. It is just a game and should be looked at as such.

^^Yes, grasshoper, before you may leave your compartment you must transport the ball across this rice paper and resume your positionless duties.
